Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, despite the language barrier. They always tried their best to make every aspect of our stay as pleasant as possible. The Luxury Spa Suite was amazing! Very spacious and the huge onsen was out of this world. We were traveling as a party of six and we got to dine in different private dining rooms in the property and each of them face a large and beautiful garden. The food served at breakfast and dinner was also superbly crafted and provided an amazing culinary experience for my family and I. I would HIGHLY recommend this Ryokan for anyone visiting Kyoto.
The location is a little detached from the main attractions in Kyoto, apart from Nanzen-ji and Heian-jingu that are close by. We traveled to the city by taxi most times but there is an underground train station nearby (5 mins walk).

While the price was up there, the stay was absolutely worth it. The room was huge, with so many exceptional amenities that made it certainly the best place we stayed in Japan. Everything was luxurious, from the bathroom, to the garden, the amazing food. The staff were able to help us with everything we needed even before we got there, such an amazing experience.

a great old house
the people who run the place are possibly nice, however it is a group of amateurs with no attempt to accommodate a westerner. I was 3 times in Japan, staying in various upscale places. This is a very different.
you have to play by their rules with a privilege paying almost $1000 USD per day. Even a dinner cancelled in am ( $300 USD extra charge), you will be charged for late pm booking anyway! nobody speaks English, except for a limited in command lady. So, the place is nice, but for 50% less you may find a much better deal.
I highly not recommend the place.

a true Kyoto experience. But, what stood out the most was the staff and their excellent service towards me. One of the best hotel experiences of my life.
absolutely nothing. a must go!

everything: scenery, room, kind service , splendid garden
construction noise was very unfortunate. drilling in the wall awful, if we knew it in advance we wouldn’t come because we chose this hotel for the reason to be in a quiet and peaceful area but it didn’t happen..

Every staff member with whom we came in contact was attentive. I and my husband really had a wonderful stay.

The room is spacious, the bath is magnificent, and the garden is wonderful -- one couldn't ask for a better view while enjoying a superb breakfast.
8.0 / 10.0
The place is just amazingly beautiful and charming, totally new but maintaining the traditional Japanese hotel style (including low door frames where tall people hit their head frequently...). The rooms have a great design and functionality. The garden is gorgeous. The place has a feel of a chique boutique hotel.
One problem is that except for Mayumi and Keiko (who are GREAT!), nobody speaks English and can not resolve any problem or help much in planning things. That seems not appropriate for a hotel in this price range. Also, you need to tell the front desk at night what exact time you will have breakfast the next morning. If you forget, they will call you at your room until you in tell them. If you are late, don’t be surprised if they knock on your door and remind you that your breakfast is ready. All of this is, as I understand, a very Japanese way of doing things, but not exactly what we expected being on a relaxed vacation. Another problem was that the day we left there was a wedding and other guests like us could not sit in the restaurant nor the garden not the terrace- all reserved for the wedding - so all you can do then is sit at the reception desk or in your room (unless you had to check out already).

Staff was incredible, especially Keiko!
Welcome gifts in the room such as Champagne, Chocolates and mini aperitivo!
Loved the 11 courses of Japanese Cuisine *great way to get to know this region is through food that was explained by the staff)
leaving this modern ryokan

We enjoyed our 2-night stay here very much. The Ryokan has a beautiful Japanese garden.
The Japanese style breakfasts were superb, different sets of breakfast for each morning.
Its location allowed us to leisurely stroll along the north-east region of Kyoto.
The Ryokan has only 5 rooms, so we felt cozy and comfortable.
The selection of drinks and tea (all free) in the room was great.
