Very kind and helpful host! Helped us with finding good snorchling spots and also with planning our trip around the island. It's not ordinary hostel as you might be used to, but there is everything you need really:) Cute dogs included!
Far from city centre and ferry, but still walkable distance.

We had such a great time at Cabana Sustentable!!! Javi is the best host and will help you with everything you need! Make sure you ask him for tips on snorkeling spots and try his coffee! It's also super convenient to rent a scooter off him and explore the island or he has the option of bikes which are more affordable. We loved how sustainable the place is and even though the facilities are basic it's a really impressive set up. Also the dogs are so friendly and great company!!!! Thank you Javi we will definitely be back next time we are in Mexico

Walkable to most everything... it's not a short walk, but walking is good for you. Community refrigerator. Oxxo store nearby. And thank goodness a fan was provided.
You can ooh and ahh all day long about recycling and sustainability, but the bottom line here is that it's a camping setup in somebody's back yard, and it's a filthy junkyard and a mosquito breeding ground. Sustainability doesn't have to be filthy or hazardous or disorganized. Poorly supported flooring in the room...very soft and spongy in places, and a leaky roof. Electricity was provided by extension cords draped through the trees from the outdoor kitchen. I got inadvertently unplugged in the middle of the night more than once. Recycle, yes! I respect and support that, but this was piles and piles of stuff that appears to have been there for many months. It made for a very crowded space. And the poor chickens were rarely let out of their small cages...once a day for half an hour if they were lucky...where's the good life for them? The community shower is in the middle (literally) of the outdoor camp kitchen, and there's no hot water, regardless of what the host tries to tell you. It's not even set up for hot water He tried to pretend there was, and then tried to extend a garden hose into the main house but it didn't work ..all I got was a trickle of not-even-warm water. VERY BAD ant infestation, could not really use the seating area because of it. My cabana was about 4 feet from the outhouse, and that space was also (per their signage) the men's urinary station, meaning go pee on the ground for the world to see. One of the worst things was the compost bins being right at the seating area...every time a food scrap was tossed in, the mosquitoes dive-bombed the whole place. Notice in the pictures that the bed is a mattress on the floor...just so you know. The only coverings on the windows are screens and thin cloth for a curtain (which didn't keep out the rain). Coffee maker was taken into the big house every evening and not available until mid- or late morning. Sustainability is always a work in progress.

Javi is very sweet. He's really committed to the environmental sustainability cause.
By nature, living sustainably is not comfortable when you're making the adjustment. Because I was only there for one night, I didn't have enough time to adjust.

The Host is a real kind, helpful & respektful Person.
It was also a favour to stay there with Jonathan and the 3 dogs. :)
He helped us a lot, we rented his scooter and snorkelgear.
He took us to nice places and restaurants and his family.
In return we helped him with his projects.
Thank you for the 5 nights!

Javi is very helpful and can give you tips and recommendations. Possible to chill in the garden in the hammocks
The dogs are super cute and it really matters to them that you take seriously recycling and minimising our impact.
A bit outside the main streets so you've got to walk quite a lot
The shower had barely any pressure making it hard to wash your hair.

The Owner and staff were great, really helpful with everything, was a good price. A bit further from the centre but could walk there in 30mins and only 60 pesos for a taxi. Only 3 rooms so was nice and quiet, enjoyed lying on the hammock watching the chickens running around and the lizards climbing the trees.
It is just a hut and as basic as it gets and I enjoy that kind of place but It wouldn't be for everyone.

This place is very basic and rustic, but surprisingly comfortable and homely. The owner is super nice and if the small hot plate in the cabin isn't enough, he welcomes you to use the facilities in the house too. He also has cheap bikes, scooters and taxis available. There is a lovely dog called Code

Really nice and unique place to stay when exploring the island. Javier is probably the friendliest host I’ve met during my time in Mexico, he will give you all the information you need and provide you with a bike or motorcycle for a good price.

it is probably the special place of Cozumel with the friendliest host of the island. Javier is dedicated to sustainability and created a really unique place with the ressources of the neighborhood. he is a very understanding and aware of the needs of the customers. please support him and his project by booking a night in his little refugium!

Javi is a very energetic and social person with an amazing organisation taking care of recycling garbage of his local community, and has many interesting projects going.
Be aware that the cabaña is in a garden with chickens, roosters and ducks. The roosters can wake you up pretty early!
