We had a great stay. The facilities were very good, the restaurants were all nice, in particular the a la carte in the Manor House was excellent. The pool, sauna, jacuzzi and gym were always available when we want them. The gardens were lovely and the view to the city was beautiful.
We would definitely recommend the hotel to others

My son and I arrived after having spent a week in Saccarum resort in Calheta. Our flight was canceled and we had to pivot our stay here. The facilities, though beautiful and historic, left much to be desired. The room we had in the Manor house had no air-conditioning And was infested with bugs in the bed. The staff was quick to move us to a room that was only a double bed, but promised us air conditioning. The air conditioning did not work. We saw remnants of bugs but no live activity. When we checked out, the staff couldn’t have cared less. It’s safe to say we will never return here .

This is a beautifully maintained property with great views over Funchal. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful.

Had to stay here when our flight home was cancelled. It was an amazing place with great staff fab food and a view to die for!

Staff absolutely lovely. Food excellent. Our room had the usual modern thin walls, which could do with a soundproofing board behind tv. But other than that a relaxing holiday.

Lovely hotel which other than at the occasional breakfast never seemed busy. Dry quiet in its own private gardens. Excellent pool bar where we ate several times in the evening. The trade off is a half hour walk, downhill, to the town. And for us usually a taxi back up the hill.

Excellent staff very friendly, food really good and rooms and public area’s very clean. The only issue was enough irons and ironing boards, people seemed to keep them and didn’t return them, so maybe have them in every room. Thanks for a lovely stay.

I was feeling sick . The maintenance personal came quickly to solve the problem. Later they called to check on me, and offered me thee or soup

Fantastic location, a little bit (12 EUR taxi) away from town. The staff were very friendly and, for what it’s worth, the bar prices reasonable.

Is this a hotel or a half empty retirement home?
Once grand back in the 1950's now very very dated with veneer peeling from bedside tables and bathrooms that should have been redone at least twice in the last 30 years..... (shower curtains for the horrible shower over bath and a wall mounted hairdryer worthy of a museum!! Etc etc)
Did not help that I had intended to book the fantastic Quinta da Casa Branca a true luxury boutique 5 star hotel at the same cost as this past it place.... how to rub salt in the wound of my mistake that this was so so inferior....

Mixed picture: we paid quite a lot for a very large suite decorated with lovely furniture and paintings. However, aspects of the room were unsatisfactory: the bathrooms felt like they were at an elderly relative’s house. There was no proper shower, just a hose with a shower head which would balance precariously on a holder on the wall and which came off twice, hitting my children painfully.
Food was mediocre: a stodgy pasta dish came with a large dead black fly in it. Club sandwich was average at best.
