We had an incredible stay at this wonderful family hotel. The surroundings are beautiful and very close to the large wetlands. There was a laguna only a few meters down form our room where we also spotted many species of bird. By taking a boat up the river you can see even more varieties of birds, caimans, and turtles. Cano Negro is one of our favorite places to visit in all of Central America due to its beautiful nature and diversity of birds. We will definitely come back in the future!
Noteworthy, the family also offer dinner which was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!

Pleasant staff quiet location close to the park.
Very complicated and expensive to get to without a car. Only one bus a day. Rather remote.

A very friendly, relaxed, family hotel in a superb location: a short walk to the end of the garden and you are at the lagoon. We spent the first and last hours of every day there watching the incredible bird life. The highlight was a boat tour with Douglas, who has a wide knowledge of birding.
we took all our meals in El Fogon restaurant next door. A good varied menu and friendly service.

Douglas and his family were lovely hosts..... The rooms were perfect for us and the location even better! Douglas even went the extra mile and made us breakfast at 5am as we were heading out on a boat trip around Cano Negro.... I mean.... Absolutely amazing. No food in the evening, but a superb restaurant next door meant that that was no hardship.
Nothing, again Costa Rica smashed it out of the park!

nice and kind people, Douglas really know birds and took us to see a great potoo and others. The morning boat tour by his son is also very good. Breakfast is affordable and delicious.
nothing, but be prepared that English is limited there. we have no problem though to get the important things conveyed by using google translate.

Nice place in Cano Negro. The family running the place is very friendly but they speak little English. The breakfast was very good. We also did two tours with them, a night tour and an early morning boat tour, and the boat tour was very good.
We did not see much in the night tour, but they compensated with an extra long morning tour.

Great accommodation in Cano Negro. Family who run it is really nice and helpful, there were no problem with anything. The accommodation is really nice, it sits in a large garden which is connected to small lagoon.
It is clean, has coffee maker (which is important for me:). Next to the Poponjoche is restaurante Fogon, which has the best meal I ate during our month in Costa Rica.
We are birdwatchers so wanted to take the tour on lagoons. We did our search in the village and than decided to take son of owner of Poponjoche as guide since he can speak english. His father who is good bird guide went also with us. We were happy we choose them.
Beware, there is NO BUS from Cano Negro to Upala or Los Chiles on Sunday!!! And taxi can get really expensive on this day.
The chairs for sitting in the garden are the most uncomfortable chairs I ever sat in..

Close to the caño. Lots of wildlife.
Old facilities. Very thin walls. Does not value the money.

The bed in the accommodation was good and the room had sufficient space. The shower was good and had hot water throughout the visit. There was no coffee making facilities when we arrived but when we raised the issue the host quickly supplied a coffee machine. The WiFi was accessible from our room and had good reception during our stay. The accommodation is also next door to a good restaurant.
We weren't given the room we had originally booked on arrival as our original booking was for a room with a coffee maker and fridge. The owners don't speak English so if like us you have little Spanish, communication is more difficult. The hosts son spoke English and therefore resolved our requests for us. Although we didn't get the room we had booked the one we stayed in was perfectly adequate in size and equipment once we were provided with a coffee maker. The biggest issue for us was noise in the evening and particularly from the adjoining accommodation. The room we stayed in had another one adjoining it and because the partition wall appears to be a single board it was like being in the same room as our neighbours. The neighbours kept the television on late in the evening which made it difficult to sleep.

had a restaurant right next door, and you could walk down to the dock and see the birds in the lagoon. recommended an exc. guide for our fishing trip. even had rastas mom cook our fish at there restaurant.
ordered rooms with AC, got charged the AC prices but didn’t get AC. AC wasn’t needed because we had over cast skies for both days.

Lovely rooms, at a good rate.

Good, economical and clean rooms in a beautiful setting with a garden and a lagoon behind the place where you can already see a lot of birds. Especially if you get help from the owner Douglas who has a great knowledge and is very enthusiastic. They also offer great tours on the canals in Cano Negro. Only took breakfast here, which was very good. And next door there is also restaurant El Fogon. Also the wifi worked very good, even in my room.

lovely place
You need a car if you go to this region. The bus to and from Cańo Negro never showed up on a Friday, and the bus doesn’t run at all on Sundays. it cost us $40 each way to get someone to drive us to Los Chiles bus station.

This place is just great. Douglas and the rest of the family do everything they can to be of service.
The place is very relaxing, a big nice garden with a lot of birds, a gorgeous lagoon (check out the colors at sunrise and sunset) and the rooms I stayed in were very comfortable.
They offer tours: I did one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, guided by the sons, I can only recommend it, they know a lot about the place and the animals.
There is also sometimes breakfast or diner organised to small groups. I did have diner the first night, locally caught fish, which was just amazing.
During the day there were some locals working there, having a meeting. All of this gives the place a very relaxed and familiar feeling, which is just very nice.
Nothing, everything was ok

Great location. Staff were willing to lend us utensils that were not supplied
This is a CASH only facility. I think that should be made abundantly clear to travelers booking in the future. Cockroaches in the room.

This place is fantastic! The rooms are comfortable. Cleanliness is impeccable. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. Even with my terrible Spanish, we managed just fine. The grounds are gorgeous. They have their own dock on the lagoon and can arrange tours. My guide Jesus was one of the best spotters I've ever worked with. The restaurant next door (El Fogón) is excellent. There is a small market just 100 meters away. If you're coming from the direction of Los Chiles, the first cell tower you see is next to the market. At dawn, grey-necked wood rails forage on the lawn. At dusk, fruit bats pass the dock as they leave the roost. It really is idyllic.

The location was great, with big fruit trees behind the rooms and a short walk to the docks on the lagoon. There was also a restaurant next door which was convenient. Lots of native birds flying around the property eating seeds and fruit from the trees.
It was a bit pricey for what you got. The rooms were very big, but kind of excessively big for what was needed. The staff didn't really speak much english but thankfully my level of spanish was enough to get by. There really are next to no options in Cano Negro though!

The lodge, the area and the lady is very nice
The building works from 6am in three different places around our lodge, particularly when you try to sleep, the owner has no management skills at all, he just want to sell the tours.
