About this cottage rental
Recently chosen as one of the Top 5 VRBO Vacation rentals in Nova Scotia by Trip101, Deep Blue Sea Cottage is a gorgeous coastal cottage on a 130-acre property five minutes from the Cabot Trail.
There’s ocean, a huge beach nearby and breathtaking panoramas. This cottage books Saturdays to Saturdays, when you are choosing your dates; it has features you'll love: a veranda with wall-to-wall, eight-foot-high windows, an open structure, contemporary yet rustic furnishings, walls finished with white boards inside, and cedar shingles outside, in classic Cape Breton style.
Without exaggerating, sunsets will take your breath away. You will enjoy complete seclusion and memorable views in one of the most spectacular parts of Cape Breton, but you won't be without conveniences like wi-fi and a fast Fibre- op internet connection, a fully-equipped kitchen and other comforts, like a bright bathroom with heated floors and a fully-tiled shower. A Vermont Castings wood stove will give you the option of a lovely fire, which makes for a cozy day in Autumn. There is a lovely, mature hardwood forest around the cottage to explore, and as day turns to evening with a knockout sunset, relax, listen to music or catch up on things you don't have time for at home.
The Master bedroom area offers a Queen bed and AC; the second bedroom offers a comfortable single. From the spacious deck or from the veranda, you can see the beach, lobster boats, eagles perch nearby, moose, bobcats; foxes make appearances, and whales pass by most of the year; you will wake up to these views each morning and enjoy them all day.
This cottage changes over on Saturdays only. If your preferred weeks happen to be booked, please check our other lovely oceanside cottages: #203860, #382569, #3490361, #277105, #2599594 (Although the cancellation policy lists "no refunds," there ARE refunds–it is just that our policy did not fall within VRBO's categories.)
I designed this cottage to have all of the charm of a real coastal cottage, with excellent amenities, and lots of privacy in a spectacular setting with fantastic views of the ocean. Many folks rent out their seasonal homes in Cape Breton, but the Deep Blue Sea Cottage is designed specifically for visitors' pleasure and needs.
There is a rich, strong culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. Although a three-day visit to the Island is not uncommon, a week is what it takes to really get a sense of the rhythms and charm of Cape Breton. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities.
There are a number of good restaurants closeby, and also a number of grocery stores within a half hour.
Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, three minutes from cottage, and it's mostly unoccupied during the week– in addition to the fine beach and safe swimming for children, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. World-class golf at the renowned Cabot Links and the new Cabot Cliffs (rated #39 and #10 in the world by Golf Digest) is a short-drive. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.
There are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (5 minutes away) at which you can explore a fabulous bluff by the sea, with great views north and south, Margaree Harbour (7 minutes away), with its beach and two lighthouses, the Broad Cove area, with its spectacular scenic drive. Cheticamp, about 20 minutes away, offers glimpses into Acadian culture.
Beside Cheticamp is the entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with trails, lookoffs and waterfalls. South of us are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town itself, which offers music, pubs with local music and food. There are also renowned crafters in the area; quilting, rug hooking, and folk-art can all be found locally.

The house was just at it looked in the pictures. Views were beyond expectations. So peaceful, we felt completely private. Close to hiking trails, beaches, and the Cabot Trail. Our host showed us places to go that weren’t on the usual maps. Kitchen had everything we needed. Had one meal out a day, usually lunch and so enjoyed relaxing mornings and gorgeous sunsets. One week barely scratched the surface of Cape Breton.

Top to bottom, front to back a 10/10 experience.
Location - stunning views from the sunroom and the front deck. You get to see all of the weather coming in and with the binoculars so many amazing sights. The cottage was so beautiful. So clean. Best sleeps at night. Everything you need when you’ve flown in with carry-on luggage! Stewart was such a great host. Came
By and gave us great ideas on how to spend our time and we did several of his suggestions. My husband is from Cape Breton so we got to spend some time seeing friends and family. This place is a gem. We will look forward to staying there again! You won’t be disappointed.

The cottage was perfect for two. The view is incredibly beautiful from the cottage. The privacy was romantic and offered a feeling of rest and restore. Everything you need is provided including advice on things to do and places to eat. This is the perfect place to stop spinning in circles and reconnect with someone you love.

Once we booked our stay, the owner Stewart reached out with great advice and directions to help us prepare for our trip. Upon arrival, Stewart came up to the cottage to meet us. This is the first time we've had a property owner come out to meet us on arrival, so we didn't know what to expect. We had a great visit with Stewart and for almost two hours he annotated maps with suggestions of where to go, where to eat, and things to see based on our interests. This proved to be incredibly valuable during our stay. We did nearly everything that Stewart suggested and nothing disappointed. We had relatively strong winds and rain one night of our stay, and Stewart emailed us to warn us about the weather and make sure everything was alright with our stay. Overall, Stewart was an A++ host.
The cottage was clean and cozy with everything we needed. As the weather was warming up during our stay, there was some insect activity, primarily in the bathroom, but that's to be expected in a rural and semi primitive rental.
The little wood stove very quickly warmed up the cottage on cool mornings and provided a nice cozy ambiance. And the view off the deck is unbeatable.
Overall we were thrilled with our stay and will return to Cape Breton. We hope to stay with Stewart again when we do.

This is a truly magical spot. Stuart set us up with ideas of things to do and insights about the area on day one. He was easy to contact and responsive all week. The cottage is lovely with spectacular views over Chimney Beach. I highly recommend this place!

Excellent stay in this cute and well-furnished cabin. The property is clean and very well-maintained. Stewart was delightful and extremely helpful while respecting our privacy. The cabin is perfect for a couple wanting a place to stay close to the Cabot Trail and other local sights. The view from the porch (when there wasn’t fog), is exceptional. I do recommend an SUV for the steep road up to the cabin.

Deep Blue Sea is a rustic and charming cabin perched on the side of a mountain overlooking the sea and coastline. The owner built it with his own two hands (and maybe a couple of others), and can tell you all about its history, as well as just about anything else you might want to know about Cape Breton. Privacy is assured by its location nestled in the woods on 3 sides. It is kept immaculately clean, and any issues or questions are dealt with quickly and efficiently. Highly recommended!

I fell in love with the Deep Blue Sea Cottage when I first saw it advertised, and the real thing did not disappoint. Stewart was an incredible host, ensuring that we had all the information required pre-check in and then again post arrival. He catered his recommendations to our stated interests and we were able to do many of the things that he recommended. When the weather was less cooperative, we thoroughly enjoyed staying in. The peaceful surroundings and the stunning view of Chimney Corner Beach and waterfront made for an incredibly relaxing experience.
We would go back in a heartbeat! I’ve already recommended it to a number of my friends.

A breathtaking retreat at the edge of the world.
This is an extraordinary property on all fronts. There is not a conceived category where it could fall short of a 5/5 rating.
Sadly pictures cannot truly incapsulate the transcendence of time and the vastness and beauty offered by this classic structure and location.
It feels like the edge of the world and a departure from all things familiar to our modern existence. If you want to escape, unplug and disappear, look no further.
The interior living space is tastefully constructed - combining old and new - and is immaculately manicured. I would almost describe it as a country spa.
The property’s host is a seasoned connoisseur of all things related to the immediate and surrounding gifts that Cape Breton has to offer. I implore one to take his thoughtful guidance and direction - as his highlighted list of suggestions can truly make ones trip.
The owner and the property both seem to exude a pride and true love of nature and it’s inhabitants.
This experience is one that celebrates our relationship to the old world that I believe we all long for.
I cannot wait to return.

Honeymoon
We stayed at the “deep blue sea,” cottage for our honeymoon. And we enjoyed every minute.
Stewart popped by shortly after we arrived to ensure we checked in alright and then gave us some information on trails/etc in the area. We explored some of the trails he told us about and they were lovely!
Beautiful cottage with an even more beautiful view. Stewart is very helpful and informative to his guests and we enjoyed every minute of our stay! Highly recommend this cottage to anyone!

Best Spot in CB!
This was our second time staying at Deep Blue Sea. The cottage and views are simply amazing - the perfect place to get away from it all. Sandy beaches and wonderful hiking trails are all close by, as is the Cabot Trail. We especially enjoyed Margaree Harbour Beach and the refurbished lighthouses. Stewart is an exceptional host and takes the time to get to know you. All of his recommendations were spot on and made our trips so memorable. Communication, check-in, cleanliness, and comfort are unmatched. Don't look anywhere else, just stay here!!

Amazing ocean view!
Cottage was true to the photos. Ocean view is breathtaking. Night sky was quite the sight to see - so many stars! No problem getting up the driveway with just a front wheel drive - just don’t hesitate. Would not hesitate to recommend this to others.

You can’t beat the view from here!
Stewart’s property overlooks the ocean, chimney corner beach, and sea wolf island. The cottage we stayed in was modern yet rustic, with everything you could possibly need. The sweet sound of waves lapping and the wind blowing really reminds you of the power of nature and the beauty it holds. We saw seals bobbing in the ocean, birds soaring at eye level from the beautiful deck. All in all, the experience was amazing and we hope to be back again.

Great week in cottage with spectacular view
Everything was outstanding from the moment we arrived. Stewart met us that night and gave great pointers on what to do, where to go, and what to see. And that was just the beginning. Cottage was intimate, cozy, just wonderful. Would highly recommend to all.

A wonderful stay at a cottage with breath taking views of the surrounding vistas. the cottage is quiet and peaceful and comes with all the amenities to make one's stay easy and comfortable. Overall a greater stay and would definitely go again.

Hurricane
We just returned from a week staying at Deep Blue Sea which was to say a unique experience. We arrived about 12 hours prior to Hurricane Dorian which swept through the area on Sept 7/8. It was both scary and thrilling at the same time. The cottage was an awesome viewing platform for the storm and we felt quite safe. Unforunately we lost power and water for 5 days. almost the entirety of our stay. This sounds bad but we had a very enjoyable time there. The woodstove kept us warm and we cooked our meals on it daily which worked out quite nicely. We ate dinner by candlelight and were able to get adequate supplies of water for drinking, bathes etc. Stewart was extremely helpful throughout. We were able to enjoy the area with very few visitors around. Overall wee very much enjoyed the stay although it was not the vacation we had planned it was very fun. Would definitely stay again if in the area. The views from the deck are incredible, the cottage was well supplied and Stewart kept us informed on where there was power on in the area. Highly recommended.

Breathtaking Views
We were lucky enough to find this property on HomeAway for our quick honeymoon in Cape Breton. The pictures on the listing are spectacular but they can’t even compare to how beautiful this places in real life. The house is fully stocked with everything you need, including beach chairs. The layout is beautiful and the heated bathroom floors made me jealous I didn’t have them at home. Stewart, the owner, also took the time to come over and sit with us and suggest how we plan our trip around CB given we were only there for three days. His suggestions were all perfect and we are glad we listened, including his suggestion of a hike at White Point and dinner at Woodroad. Our only complaint about the entire trip was that it was so short. We can’t wait to come back and spend more time in beautiful Cape Breton

Nova Scotian Bliss
My family of three (mom, dad, and teenage son) highly recommend this cottage and our time in beautiful Nova Scotia. A former pottery studio, the cottage is unique, isolated (but not too), and comfortable. The views of the surrounding forest and Chimney Corner beach are incredible, and the cottage's location provides a perfect jumping off spot for all that Cape Breton Island has to offer, from the John Cabot Trail, hiking in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and the culturally diverse local communities and great area restaurants and music. We really appreciated the owner's "orientation" the morning of our first day -- he pointed us to some great sites, music, and restaurant opportunities that we would have likely overlooked. How many owners take the time to meet with their renters to give them the lay of the land? We fell in love with Nova Scotia and hope to go back.

Amazing!
Our first visit to Cape Breton and certainly not our last. The views we're unbelievable and Stewart, our host, spent time with us pointing out the great places to visit and his advise made our vacation so enjoyable. The Cabot trail and White Point we're only 2 of the places that Stewart recommended and there were many more, including great restaurants and local music. We spent a day at our cottage due to a bad storm and we enjoyed every minute! The cottage is so cozy, with everything you could possibly need. We have already recommended Cape Breton and Deep Blue Sea to many of our friends. Thank you Stewart for your great advise and hospitality!

Great Escape
This was one of the best rentals we have had. Our host, Stewart , was the best. He helped in many ways and was very accessible, The cottage was extremely cool. Million dollar view. All necessities present. Bed was comfortable. Location was remote and private, close to a lot of entertainment. For any oyster lovers, the Brook Village grocery had great oysters for great price. Many churches close by. Lots of live lobster and mussels. The bakery in Cheticamp is a must. Also, the dancing goat was outstanding. We visited Cape Breton Clay, and there were some really nice pieces of pottery which were irrestable. We can’t wait to come back. Will definitely rent again from Stewart. I cannot say enough good about our host and the property.

Perfect Stay
We had the most perfect stay at Deep Blue Sea Cottage and on Cape Breton Island. This visit was filled with beautiful views, sea breezes, quiet time, exercise, new adventures, music, sand, yummy food, wildlife and so much more. Cape Breton is not to be missed. Deep Blue Sea Cottage was more then we had anticipated. The view was spectacular. We felt perched above the sea, looking down on the beauty below us. The birds sang, the wind blew, perfect experience for one's senses.
The cottage is a lovely place to be. It is warm, cozy, private and located in a central place to explore the entire island. The upstairs bedroom/loft is a charming space with a very comfortable bed and lovely windows for breezes. The kitchen has all the accessories you need to prepare nice meals. The wood burning stove adds an extra element of coziness. The cottage is clean, simple and enchanting., a perfect space to rest and refuel. We had a nice visit with Stewart the evening we arrived to settle us in and share lots of information on places to visit and sights to see. Based on this we saw a lot of tucked away, quiet spots and experienced local culture. This was a week that filled our senses and left us with lovely, lasting memories. Thank you Stewart and Belle and Deep Blue Sea Cottage.

Paradise on the Ocean
This charming cottage of special architecture where white walls were flooded with light couldn't have been set on a more dramatic cliff overlooking the ocean and Chimney Corner beach. The cozy clean cottage was beautifully furnished and fitted out with everything one would need -- even included a playlist of eclectic music which added to our most enjoyable stay. Bring your binoculars! Breathtaking views, great weather, central location, generous amounts of time, information, generated lists with helpful suggestions provided by our terrific host -- we couldn't have asked for more.
Our stay was amazing!

25th Wedding Anniversary + Deep Blue Sea Cottage = Perfection!
Our stay at the Deep Blue Sea cottage was...spectacular! Truly. The cottage was a perfect mix of rustic with amenities, and very clean as well. Let’s put it this way...I drew the cottage foot by foot and wanted to return to Indiana and rebuild the cottage! So often we have talked about simplifying our living, and now we have a blueprint that we know we can live with. The view was always impressive, even on the days it rained. Every sunset was different and we felt privileged to have the view from Deep Blue Sea.
We expected a visit from Stewart, since he’d left a hand-written note indicating such. Others too, on VRBO, had been appreciative of his help and commented so. What we didn’t realize was how he would ultimately help us plan our entire vacation, given the weather projections. All his suggestions were “spot on” and we would end the day saying, “another perfect day thanks to Stewart!” On the day of checkout, we finally met our “neighbors” down the hill as we were all exiting the drive one last time. We all agreed the location was idyllic.
The visit to Cape Breton itself was inspiring. It is the home of my heart. The island and it’s people truly called to us. I kept saying, “who has the privilege to live here?” We went to a Farmers Market and loved our interchanges with the locals. We appreciated how people knew their neighbors...a rarity nowadays.
The reason for our visit was to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Our original plan was Scotland. Cape Breton was more affordable, so we made this decision. After Day 2, I said to my husband, “I don’t know what Scotland is like, but this is perfect! Let’s come here for our 30th (if not sooner)!”
Thanks Stewart...you, your cabin, and your island are gems!
Love - A couple of Hoosiers from Indiana
P.S. The car rental upgrade from a Toyota Rav 4 to a brand new Jeep Cherokee didn’t hurt the ascent up to the cottage either! Ha!

You will hear more rustling of the trees than the ocean, as you sit on the deck in your private hill top retreat with an ocean view that goes on forever. Clear nights are incredible for star gazing.
The cottage is compact and perfectly appointed. The kitchen was better stocked than any other rental unit I have stayed at. Stuart has designed a place that feels totally right and has everything that's needed. He spent time with us the 1st day making sure we knew our way around the area, and checked in with us throughout the stay; that was a nice touch.
The sleeping loft is cozy, with access to a very comfortable bed on only one side of the bed. If that is an issue for you (was not for us) , try one of Stuart's larger cottages. Even though the bedroom is in the loft, it cooled off beautifully for us every night.
I would not hesitate to stay here again or at any of Stuart's other properties.
Go to the Dancing Goat, either in Inverness or Margaree. Once you've been there and know what you want, you can call in advance and they will hold baked goods for you -- otherwise they sell out fast (think gingersnap cookies and porridge bread)
FYI driving distances:
To turn on to 219: 15 minutes
Inverness: 25 minutes
The Normaway Inn: 35 minutes
Cheticamp: 35 minutes. Largest Co-op for supplies
Red Shoe Pub: 42 minutes
Glenora distillary: 35 minutes
Celtic Music Center 65 minutes

Cozy, well-appointed cottage, on the spectacular Cape Breton Island coast. Great sunroom and deck with an even greater view. Large queen bed in the loft with comfy single downstairs. Lots of hooks to hang things and storage. Well supplied kitchen with propane grill outside for those grilled steak dinners. Stewart was extremely helpful and provided valuable information on the local area which greatly enhanced our stay. Don't miss the Barn for music and square dancing at the Normaway Inn in the Margaree Valley or the Coal Miners Cafe in Inverness for a great meal. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend to anyone wanting a quiet, secluded getaway.

The Deep Blue Sea Cottage is nestled high in the trees overlooking the most breathtaking panoramic views of the western Cape Breton coastline. From the moment we pulled up next to the cottage we were taken by the ever changing sights and sounds. For us, it was the perfect mix of being nestled in amongst the rustling leaves and woodland birds but at the same time with a wide open vista of blue ocean. The cottage was charming, impeccably clean and provided all the necessities for a comfortable stay. No matter the weather we were cosy and content. This is a special place and we look forward to returning next year.

My husband and I recently celebrated our 20th anniversary at Deep Blue Sea Cottage and we could not have been happier with our stay. We were the cottage's first tenants and felt very lucky to be there. The cottage is located high up on a hill overlooking the west coast of Cape Breton, and the view is spectacular! The cottage itself is small and cozy, but was perfect for two people. It's well laid out -- great use of limited space -- and has some nice details, e.g., heated bathroom floors, nice linens, great photographs on the walls. The kitchen is well equipped, and even had a couple of good knives. The deck is a great place to watch the sunset or just relax and take in the view, and if the weather isn't cooperating (or the bugs are biting) there is a lovely sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the ocean. The location is great -- close to the Cabot Trail and easy access to the national park, and there are also several nice small towns nearby -- and what looked like lovely swimming beaches, although it was too cold to swim when we were there. Stewart stopped by the night we arrived and gave us lots of information and suggestions of things to do and see in the area, several of which we did during our short stay. I would highly recommend Deep Blue Sea Cottage, and hope to return there someday.
