About this cottage rental
(Clarification on cancellation policy: We will fully refund your $$ if we can still find a renter and we will try to do so. That's just not one of the options on vrbo.)
This cottage is feet from the water in serene Long Cove on the Damariscotta River. The deck and hot tub face the widest part of the river (which is actually a mile-wide bay off of the ocean) and the famous Maine sunset. The dock and sun-warmed rocks provide access for swimmers. Though otherwise nestled into the trees, the house has a large lawn off to one side for croquet or tossing a ball. The rocks in the river are often covered with seals.
The cottage itself is beautifully restored - all wood inside and out - with an open floor plan and skylights in the kitchen. Pretty much all of the comforts of home are provided, including linens and a fully outfitted kitchen. Wood is stacked for the fireplace all year long.
There are a number of hiking trails nearby. The kayak rental place in town will deliver and/or pick up kayaks. You can rent in town and kayak back to the cottage; put in at Biscay Pond and kayak thru the wetlands to Bristol; or paddle to some nearby islands with public access for hiking, including one with a pair of nesting bald eagles. Or bring your bikes and peddle to Pemaquid Beach or Lighthouse. There’s a big pot in the kitchen if you want to purchase lobsters at the co-op – or they’ll cook ‘em right up for you there. Life is good at 'Marguerite’s Cottage'…
A note on pets: Up to 2 dogs or cats are welcome so long as the owner will vouch for their being well-behaved and plan on vaccuuming up hair. Also, if your pooch(es) are prone to barking or howling when left alone or within earshot of another dog, please plan to muzzle them. Your immediate neighbors will thank you and the sound really carries when the water is calm.

We had a great two-week visit at this cottage on the Damariscotta River in South Bristol, Maine. It is right on the water with amazing water views and beautiful sunsets. You will see seals and birds on the little rock islands. The best features are the views from the deck and living room, a huge working fireplace, access to a dock for swimming or boating, a hot tub, an outdoor shower, three bedrooms with comfy beds, a really well-equipped kitchen, and pet-friendly with paths to walk your pups. It is a rustic log cabin with walk-around decks on the exterior that could use some maintenance at the time of our visit, but the interior is in good condition and comfortable. Also there is access to a dock and a mooring very nearby at the neighboring house. The dock is shared with the owners and other families and can be busy at times, so you will need to check with the owners about using the dock or the mooring for a boat. During most of our two weeks we had the dock to ourselves for a morning or sunset swim. The location is great. - close to so many great hikes, restaurants, shops, and adventures in Bristol and Damariscotta while at the same time being off the beaten path and quiet. Best of all, the owners Kirsten, Erika, and Doug were great- quick responses to any questions, issues, or problems that might arise. If you are looking for a Maine Coast Experience, this cottage is pretty great.

This was our families first stay in South Bristol. We wanted to explore mid coast Maine with our family. This area did not disappoint us. The cottage was clean, and had everything we needed to make the stay enjoyable. It was the perfect home base for us to explore the area. There were multiple hiking areas nearby for all levels of hikers in the family. The dock allowed us to enjoy our kayaks without having to travel with them. We loved watching the Damariscotta River birds, fish and seals from the cottage. The deck and dock have the most spectacular sunset views. Our hosts were exceptionallly hospitable. We had the most amazing stay and I cannot say enough about how grateful we are to have found this cottage. We will be staying here again!

We loved the area and the view of the river was gorgeous! The location was great for day trips sightseeing.
The pictures and description were a little misleading. It has 1 1/2 baths instead of 2 baths. The furnitue in the living area was pretty shabby, not what was pictured, and quit dirty and dusty underneath. There were spider webs around the windows and fireplace. The bathroom shower had mildew in the grout and on the door, the toilet seat was broken. The king bed had a broken leg which we propped up with a piece of wood. We were pleased with the washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and stove. The grill on the deck was pretty greasy but the deck furniture was comfortable with a great view of the sunsets. It would have been nice to have some cleaning supplies available as we were there for two weeks. All in all we did have a good stay and and very much enjoyed our vacation.

Overall our experience staying at this South Bristol cottage was an amazing one. Sitting on the ship's bow shaped deck in the morning, coffee in hand, and staring at the Damariscotta river six feet below your feet was a heavenly way to begin each day. The residence is a charmingly simple & sparing home of knotty pine that gleams with the patina of time and love. The property was perfectly and completely outfitted. Everything we needed for our stay was on hand and in abundance. The long strolling lawn to the left of the cottage as you face the water was a perfect place to throw a ball for the dogs, play catch with my sons, and it lead to a pine needle lined path to a small peninsula of rocks where we launched paddle boards, and swam in the deep clean brine for hours. Just offshore from the house is a chain of small tidal islands that for the most part are rocky outcroppings that disappear at high tide. A bob of sealions resides on those rocks, sunning themselves during the day, and hunting the waters for food at dusk. Our nights were blessed with the soft sounds of barking seals, the bell like tolling of sailboat rigging ringing against masts, and the breaking of small waves upon the rocks. There's not a lot of businesses in the area to speak of, but what there is suited our every need. Strongly recommend the Harbor Side Cafe, Fisherman's Co-Op, and the Cove Side for a Dark & Stormy or 2. All within 5 mins of the rental. Our host Kirsten was a delight. The trip was perfect.

Great trip! The house has a beautiful view and is in a great location. One of the best things is the pup friendliness.

This was our family’s first vacation to Maine, and it was everything we imagined. Kirsten’s property was ideally located, secluded, yet close enough to civilization. The house was rustic, yet spotless, well-stocked, and very comfortable. Our favorite parts of our trip were the view, the huge fireplace, the dock, and the central location on Maine’s mid coast allowing us to take day trips. Kirsten was quick to respond if I needed to ask a question. We will definitely return.

We loved our time at the cottage. Between watching the seals and just being able to tune out and relax, this cottage was the perfect place. Thank you for your hospitality.

Perfect and such a peaceful place to stay. Views of the river are amazing. Watching the seals every day is a bonus.

This place was everything as promised. We woke up every morning and sat on the deck and watched the seals playing in the water and sunning on the rocks. Every night we had beautiful sunsets. We loved having the windows open and taking in the sea air. We had our 2 dogs with us and to the left of the cabin was a clearing that they loved running around and exploring. We have been coming to Maine for 18 years with our dogs and this was by far the best cabin we have had. If I could change one thing it would be that we wish we found this cabin sooner. There are tons of hiking trails nearby. The app All
Trails helped us find the best ones. The south Bristol co op provided us with a delicious lobster dinner for a reasonable price. Thank you for allowing us to stay and we will definitely be back!

One of my favorite things about this rental was how quiet and peaceful it was. No noise from traffic, just the sounds of water and birds. The house was clean and provided all we needed to cook meals. Kirsten was very responsive to all questions I had. The view of the river is spectacular. Very reasonably priced for waterfront.

This property is adorable and it has million dollar views. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen is great, and the sunsets are amazing. It is rustic and we loved that. No AC but the fans helped (only a problem in the late afternoon). The nights are very cool.

I’ve been vacationing in the area for 30+ years. The house was near all my favorite places to eat, hike etc
Now I’m trying to find a place to rent the summer or buy year round.

I hesitate to write this glowing review for fear that this beautifully rustic, tucked away cabin will be booked up for the next time we want to return! It was the perfect space for our family of five and puppy. There's nothing like waking up to water views, having coffee overlooking the water, and a cocktail watching the sunset. The dining table provides spectacular views as well, and the amble living space with large windows was ideal for playing games, reading, lounging, and enjoying the fireplace on chilly and rainy days. Be sure not to miss the beach yoga on Pemaquid Beach - a pass to return to this quiet, sandy beach is included and you can rent chairs and umbrellas, and the lunch offerings are fantastic. Just down the road from the beach is The Committed Sole, a very special restaurant - incredible food and drink (but not pricy), live music, tables on a dock overlooking boats and sunset. It is not to be missed and we look forward to returning and enjoying the stunning, yet laid back, decor and warm hospitality. Several local hikes, renting kayaks, and taking a two-hour seal watch/oyster tasting boat trip are among the other activities we enjoyed. Back to the cabin, I can't believe I haven't mentioned the hot tub or outdoor shower yet! Both were the epitome of vacation relaxation. And thank you, Kirsten, for providing everything we needed from pots and pans, amble sheets and towels, a dishwasher and, washer and drier, which made a family vacation all the more convenient.

This was our fist trip to Maine and the house was just perfect. Very clean, very secluded, quiet but only 15 minutes to Demariscotta where there are some cute restaurants and shops. We did a different hike every day and rented Kayaks from Mid Coast Kayak- they were delivered to the house for us. We paddled around and watched the seals lounge around on the rocks outside the house. Just a fantastic week. Thank you!

Second time here for us. Watched the seals from the deck and hot tub, explored the area. Love it, we’ll be back.

I love everything about this property. It is right on the water and the beautiful views are maximized both inside and out. The cottage is charming, well equipped and very comfortable. The deck and hot tub are outstanding! There is no place I would rather be for relaxing with the tides, watching the birds and seals, kayaking, etc. I hope to go back many times!

We really enjoyed our stay. The location is beautiful and peaceful. We loved just sitting on the deck, watching the wildlife and listening to the waves. You cannot beat this part of Maine as far as things to do. Excellent communication and accommodations!

A home with windows that don’t open? I should have been concerned seeing a large fan. Each day at 3pm the sun beats down on this home heating it up greatly.
We booked a week. It took three days of two adults and two dogs profusely vomiting with diarrhea to realize the water is dangerously poor. It’s actually yellow.
This home simply was a poor fit and experience for my family.

Quaint Maine cabin overlooking the Damariscotta River with daily seal and heron sightings. Traveled in early Oct., with a kiss of cool in the air, so started and ended our days with a warming fire. House was very clean with every amenity we needed and bed was very comfortable! Very peaceful retreat! I feel rested and rejuvenated and can't wait to return.

We had an awesome stay at the cottage! Plenty of room, great views of the river and seals, quiet! and clean. Kayaked from the cottage almost everyday! A different seafood place every night. And dog friendly!!! Can't wait to visit again.

The cottage on the Damariscotta River provided our family with the experience of viewing mother nature at its best on a tidal river. From watching the tides go in and out, kayaking, listening to the seals frolic on the rocks and to watching the lobster boats- all from the deck and dock. The hot tub was an evening treat while watching the sunsets. We explored the surrounding area including Pemaquid beach and lighthouse, Boothbay Harbor and LaVerna Preserve. Thanks for a great vacation.

We enjoyed lots of sightseeing around the area during the day and then relaxing playing games in the evening! It was a perfect family vacation!

The cabin was beautiful, so relaxing and the view was stunning. Sunsets in the outdoor hot tub, can’t be beat. We didn’t even want to go out for dinner because we didn’t want to miss the sunset each night. Bought groceries in town and cooked inside most nights. I can’t wait to go back.

Perfect vacation, especially with a 7 month old puppy. Private, idyllic, yet not very far from the main road. Only store nearby, OSiers in south Bristol, has the best fried haddock sandwiches everrr...and a host of other items. Will steam lobsters. Hot tub was fantastic. Kirsten is great to communicate with. Zero complaints. Perfect vacation week!!

My husband and I have been coming back to Maine for many years every so often we love the property it was beautiful for the dogs . We saw a couple eagles. we saw the whole island of seals. the places we went for food and shopping were excellent and I have always loved Maine for the beautiful preserves and hiking trails.I slept better at the cottage than I did at home. Would love to come back to the cottage again .thank you.

I shared the property with four friends for a vacation at the end of July. In addition to amazing hospitality from the owner and her family; spectacular views; and charming accommodations; we were treated to a family of seals nesting on the rocks just off shore from the house! I can't stress enough the serenity of the setting!
The cabin was also well appointed. We had a coffee maker, microwave, dishwasher, basic kitchen supplies (even a well stocked spice rack!), a washer and dryer, a hot tub, internet access (which we used to post photos to facebook!), and even satellite television (which I think got turned on once to catch the news). We were so impressed, we hope to stay there again during our next visit to Maine.

We had not been to this area in Maine before and were very pleased with the experience overall. Damariscotta nearby is a quaint little town, which we found out is actually historic! It is not crowded with tourists but provides all the amenities you might need while away from home. My glasses were broken by my baby boy and I was able to get them fixed while I waited. Plenty of antique shopping opportunity nearby.
The cottage itself is a beautiful treat, the view is extremely relaxing. We had our three kids and there was plenty of room for everyone. We made a game of getting into the kayaks close to sunset and chasing the seals off the rocks not far in front of the cottage. They were ok with it we think! In any case we were able to get some pretty cool closeups in the end. The fisherman's co-op close by had great lobster as did the one in round pond a few miles further away. Everyone has praised Becky and so should we, she was very generous and helpful with all the local knowledge. Wish we could have stayed longer; perhaps we can make it back there soon.

We rented the cottage and then had two of our children and their children come up at different times. So we had time alone and time to romp the area with our children and grandchildren (ranging in ages from 6 to 14). The cottage was perfect for this. Wonderful kitchen, a half bath more than the description indicates, and three rustic but ideal bedrooms (two of which face the Damarascotta River so we could hear the soft sound of the water lapping the shore at night). Sunsets on the deck were magical. And Becky let us use her dock for swimming (bracing, but refreshing) and launching kayaks. (Speaking of Becky, she was a wonderful source of information about the area...and a lovely person.) In all, a perfect place to restore one's energy.

We stayed at the cottage over the 6/24/11 weekend and we loved our stay. We brought our children with us (2 grade school age and one pre-schooler) and they had so much fun. This is a quiet, secluded spot that offers fishing, hiking, kayaking, swimming and a relaxing in a hot tub.
The cottage is well-appointed with everything that you may need from a coffee maker to a gas grill and lobster pot. The three bedrooms was the perfect size for a family. Just bring clothes, bathing suit, kayak and toiletries, everything else is there.
The owners are fabulous and Becky was so helpful. We felt right at home. We cannot wait to go back..

This cabin was the nicest place my wife and I have stayed for any of our trips. This was our tenth anniversary and we were not disappointed. The place is secluded and romantic. We loved the hot tub and the fire place. The family room was cozy and clean. The seals could be seen and heard in the mornig on the rocks Rebecca was a dear and very helpful. We would not hesitate to return next year. Maine weather excluded, it was a perfect stay. I would say that it is a place to get away from it all, and not the place for teenagers and I would check on what kind of cell phone coverage your plan has up there because we had none, not that I am complaining. There was a phone in the house with long distance but when we went out we were without phone. There are plenty of trails and scenic drives around the area. All in all this place really delivered! Thanks again Rebecca.

My impression of the house is that it is all that it claims to be. On arrival, my wife and I both felt as though entering the house was akin to slipping on a favorite old jacket that fits perfectly. This house is just very user friendly and feels very welcoming and warm. The design when remodeled was very well thought out. The setting is lovely - on an inlet of the Damariscotta River with a deck and hot tub for relaxing and enjoying the view (and gorgeous sunsets). Very private and quiet. The availability of kayaks was a bonus as there are islands to explore. The owner lives nearby and was very friendly, concerned, and helpful. Only dissappointment - we rented during a somewhat wet fall and were not supplied with dry firewood. It was frustrating on the cool Maine evenings not to be able to get a fire going in the large fireplace. The only reason I didn't rate the house as excellent was that we are experienced renters in Maine and felt that it was somewhat pricey. However, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed.

We chose this cottage sight unseen based on the internet description and photos. It was just as nice as advertised and the owner was very helpful in advance of our trip in answering questions and providing suggestions for things to do, places to eat, etc. The property was clean and well-maintained and we had absolutely no problems during our stay. There was ample firewood and a wonderful fireplace and we all enjoyed the resident colony of seals on the rocks. I would recommend this as a wonderful vacation spot without reservation.
