About this apartment rental
The Cottage on a Hill is located in a spacious, newly-renovated Maine barn on a beautiful and historic farm. It is a five minute walk to nearby scenic Morgan Bay, very close to hiking trails, biking and swimming. Acadia National Park is about 45 minutes away.
The farm offers a seasonal performing arts center featuring classical, jazz, singer songwriter and blues series among others.
Few rental spaces offer all of this in a ten-minute radius.
Pets: Dogs and cats are welcome, but you must contact me in advance so we can discuss details. Upon approval, there is an additional cleaning fee of $50.00 for the one pet or $80 for two pets. The fee for the first pet is included in your VRBO total. If bringing more than one pet, the additional pet fee is payable in cash at checkout. Stays longer than 7 days will need to discuss possible additional pet cleaning fees with the host. Please note that many animals live near the property and frequently walk through it (such as deer, wild turkeys, neighbors' cats, etc.) A porcupine lives under one of the barns, so we recommend keeping dogs on a leash when outside to avoid injury.
Late arrivals after 9:00 PM are subject to a late fee of $25.00.
Additional guests: For more than 2 guests, there is an additional fee of $25 per guest per night.

Farmhouse apartment was nice and well equipped. Property was beautiful and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay in Maine with easy access to Ellsworth and Acadia.

Love the location. The view of the mountains was awesome. Alan is a very gracious host. We will definitely stay here again.

Wife and I really enjoyed the stay. Deer Isle and Stonington are must sees. Blaze Brewery in Blue Hill

Very nice, full kitchen (which I didn't really need!). Bathrooms are more than adequate with plenty of hot water. May be slightly more rustic if that's not your thing (or, just what you want if it is!)

Wrong cabin. Nasty, grimy. Owner is a JERK! Screamed at me where to drive/park, etc as if I’d been there before. Do not stay here.

Alan was very hospitable during our stay. He walked us through the rental and offered recommendations for local restaurants, hike trails, and viewpoints. Alan was only a phone call away whenever we needed anything or had any questions.

The apartment was not as it appeared in VRBO photos. The pics must have been taken by a professional photographer when you compare the actual place to the “apartment.”
It was clean but extremely rustic - and perhaps this is ok with some. The smell is very musty perhaps because this is an actual renovated barn. There are three apartments in this barn which could also make it very noisy at times.
Views are not as portrayed.
However, the host, Alan, was very friendly and we enjoyed meeting him.

A good base camp for visiting the Acadia National Park area without the maddening crowds.. we enjoyed the 45 minute drive each way to/from the Acadia NP area... light traffic on the 2-lane highways/roadways to Ellsworth made this a nice way to start and finish each day. But, be sure you stock up on snacks/food to cook because you won't find any nearby restaurants - and that's what makes it such a great location! It's definitely a more rustic interior than your typical hotel/motel but that's part of the charm. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and utensils, etc. and the overall open layout is very "loft" like. We really enjoyed the location and the host is welcoming and informative - they've been in the area for decades and are a great resource.

We did not end up staying here because of the quality of the room. The carpet was wet, it was smaller than expected, and the entryway was dirty and had cobwebs. Despite my filing out the form for 5 adults, the owner was surprised we had adults. He did promptly offer us a refund, but we ended up spending double on a last-minute hotel room because of the change.

The property was ideally placed. The grounds were gorgeous. And the space itself ead peaceful, clean, and graciously appointed. A wonderful stay.

If you are going to stay here, I suggest one of the cabins which look great.
As for the “apartment with a view” - your view most likely will be other guests grilling just a few feet from your bedroom window on what turns out to be a communal deck, or sitting at the fire ring in front of the apartment with the smoke wafting inside. On the very hot, muggy nights I was there I had to close my windows (and, for privacy, my blinds).

Everything was as advertised, comfortable and convenient spot if you want to be near Acadia but away from the crowds.

Such a beautiful setting and the unseasonably warm weather made our stay that much better! Rustic accommodations made the experience truly enchanting. And the tour of the music hall where legends have played over the past 50 years was amazing! Lots of history and tales to be told here and in the nearby towns. Stroll Blue Hill and Ellsworth Main Streets -- dining and the breweries are must do's!

Quiet, rustic cabin with beautiful views, close to many hiking trails.

Alan was very helpful, a good host. This place is on the rustic side, but it is clean and has everything you need to prepare meals or simply make coffee. The country view is beautiful and is a great place to escape the tourist heavy cities in Acadia.

The photos in the listing fooled me a little, most of the photos are of another unit called cottage with a view. The unit is very rustic, much more so than I expected. Heart was provided though a wall unit that warmed unevenly the bed area was about 10 degree cooler than the coach area. The floors were uneven and the boards had sizable gaps between. If you’re interested in a rustic farm house experience I think you would enjoy it. It was just a little too rustic for me.

great views of Acadia, quiet, has all the essentials like beds and coffee maker but missing some of the cosy things one usually expects

Unique renovated barn space with charm and functionality.
In addition to the charm and bucolic setting, the location was perfect for visiting Acadia Park and Mt. Desert.

Great!
The place was nice and quiet. It had everything you would expect from a cabin. Acadia National Park was an easy drive and I enjoyed not being in the craziness of Bar Harbor. There was also a small trail along the bay within walking distance of the property. A little farther down the road is Pugnuts Ice Cream Shop with amazing ice cream, gelato, and sherbert. The property owner was very nice and helpful. Definitely a place I would stay again!

We loved our time staying at Alan's place! It was a great size, private, and equipped with everything you'd need!

Barn stay
The photos don’t reflect the accurate room configuration and furnishings. Foul odor throughout apartment. Barn under construction for foundation repairs during our stay. Property as described does not sleep six, one queen bed, one futon & one twin blow up mattress upon request. Floor not level.

Peaceful cabin in the countryside
My husband, my 8 year old and I really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. Located in a peaceful rural setting with beautiful views and within short driving distance to Acadia NP, our main destination.
The building is located in a former farm and is one of about 3 small barns that were converted to rental spaces, along with a larger barn that now houses a small concert hall, part of the Surry Arts Center. The owners home also sits on the farm.
The space was remodeled in a rustic fashion; with reclaimed wood board flooring, heavy timber columns, soapstone trough kitchen sink. It's quite beautiful, very warm and bright. Through the windows you can see the rolling hills with the mountains of Acadia NP in the distance. You can also see the other cabins, which are very picturesque, but their main windows also face towards the mountains so although you see them it still feels very private.
The space feels like a (very charming) camping cabin. If you are looking for the Hyatt experience, this is not it. It is an old repurposed barn in the country, you can smell the old wood, the bathroom configuration is a bit awkward, the floors uneven at parts. But it has a lot of character, is very spacious and is set in an idyllic setting. It has a kitchen with everything you need to cook some meals, a hot shower, a comfortable (firm) bed, a roomy table to eat meals together.
Towels, linens, blankets, kitchen utensils and all kinds of pots and pans are all provided. But bring your own food, spices & toiletries; liquid hand and dish soap are provided.
Alan was a great host, super accommodating. He insisted on us arriving earlier than check-in if worked better for us, checked on us though our stay to make sure everything was ok, was easy to reach if we did need something. He also runs the Surry Arts Center, which has concerts, art shows, etc. It's terrific to see such a nice art institution in the community.
We'd love to stay again, and maybe catch a concert next time!

Barn w. a view
Alan was a great host. He met us at the barn and showed us around where we’d be staying. About 45 minutes from Acadia/Bar Harbor. We had a wonderful time. Alan even invited us to a fire pit on the property, unfortunately we were too tired. Next time! Note: this is a barn apartment and that comes with barn attributes, be open minded :)

Hidden Gem
Located in the serene town of Surry, ME, this is a rustic charmer. This had everything we need for a weekend of hiking. It was perfect for unwinding and meals. If you are looking for "cozy", this unit may not be for you. There are several units on this lovely property. Check them out. If you music is in your heart, you will absolutely be blown away by the history of property. Alan, it an excellent host who works very hard to accommodate his guests. I am looking forward to booking in the fall. The view foliage will be amazing.

Cozy and quiet getaway
Really enjoyed our labor day weekend in this beautiful area. The grounds really have a lot of character that really relaxes you. My fiance and I hiked Acadia and loved getting to enjoy the Bar Harbor area but then come back to a peaceful cottage. Alan is a great guy too.

Close to Acadia
We enjoyed our stay in Surry. The distamce from Logan Airport put us within an hour drive of Acadia National Park on our second day of vacation. We were greeted warmly when we arrived and were given excellent dining recommendations. The cottage was clean and well equipped. Rustic cabin set on a lovely landscape.

Not at all what we expected!
We arrived and the owner was not expecting us! He thought we were a day early. Once he realized who we were, he showed us to our apartment with a view. No view except of an adjacent cottage. Hot day in the 80’s and no A:C! Very stuffy! Entered our apartment through a mess of a barn! Quickly decided that we could not stay here! As soon as we could make a last minute reservation at a motel nearer to Bar Harbor, we left! Loosing our total 3 day reservation fee was worth it! Expensive mistake! Had some redeeming features but not well represented in the home away space!
Disappointed!

Perfect place with wonderful views
Alan was a charming and informative host. Perfect spot for visiting Acadia and the neighboring peninsula. Our stay was enhanced by some wonderful music in the performing arts barn right next to the cottage. Thank you, Alan!

Fresh Maine Air
Alan's place is in a beautiful location with a great view. The air smelled wonderfully fresh. He was a very good host and even let us do a load of laundry (for a small fee). The only thing I would suggest is that the shower room (tiny) needs some hooks and towel bars, especially since it's supposed to serve up to 6 people.

Uniquely Maine
One-of-a-kind property with million dollar views. Alan is engaging and helpful. The opera house is a treasure. Our only disappointment was not being able to see a performance. Highly recommend.

Excellent location and unique venue
Alan was wonderful! We very much enjoyed our stay in the barn.

Lack of heat was disappointing.
The apartment heater was not working and according to past reviews, has not been working for awhile. The space heaters provided kept the place warm enough but we were required to turn them off when we left the place and therefore came back to a cold room. The phone call at 10pm to say we left a light on was also annoying. In an unfamiliar place, it’s nice to leave one LED light on to come back to. The place was as pictured and the rustic feel was very well done. The view from the deck was also spectacular. Just be aware that there are a couple rental buildings fairly close together. Alan’s tour of the unique property was fascinating though.

Loved It!
This is a converted barn. We had to use space heaters. Yet it was our favorite place we stayed over a 2 week vacation in Maine (we stayed at four locations total). Alan was the perfect host. He made sure we knew where we were going, took the time to show us around and all the tips in the room. He gave us a tour of the Opera Hall. Outstanding compound. Great views. We simply loved it.

Thank you Alan for opening up your property to us.
My wife and I enjoyed our stay on Alan’s property. Alan was incredibly hospitable meeting us when we arrived. He took time to show us not only the property but a map, and pointed out local features. We enjoyed our time and would recommend this to anyone looking for a home base as they explore Maine.

Memorable Stay
This was our first vacation in Maine. We wanted to visit Acadia National Park and Castine so this was a perfect location to base from. Four whitetail deer greeted us upon our arrival. This “Apartment With a View” was “”barntastically”” quaint. The unit was built on one side of an old barn. Wood boards were installed around cow stanchions (the uprights sawed off at the concrete). The evenings were peaceful & quiet and along with the comfortable king size bed we were able to get a good night’s sleep every night. We enjoyed our stay......thanks Alan!

Cute and cozy cabin tucked away
We stayed at Alan's cabin for an extended weekend and really enjoyed the place! Alan was very accommodating and responsive throughout our trip. His cabin was comfortable and had all of the amenities that we needed for the weekend. It was also close by to a couple of restaurants and beaches, and was a 45 min drive to Bar Harbor/Acadia. Highly recommend this place!
