Situated in the heart of High Lorton, this iconic Grade II listed cottage dates back to the early 1800s, when it was once part of the original Jennings Brewery. The name Yan Yan is Cumbrian dialect for One Oak, possibly because of the nearby oak trees. Just outside the cottage is the Whitbeck, flowing alongside the village hall gardens which are open to the public. This peaceful spot is ideal to sit and enjoy the views.
The cottage interior has been upgraded and redecorated throughout in February 2023. Every window has a lovely view of the nearby fells.
The doorstep is a great starting place for scenic local walks. A short distance away is The Whinlatter pass, fabulous for cycling, whilst a trip through Lorton Valley leads to Crummock Water, Buttermere and Loweswater with some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District. For keen fell walkers, Haystacks, High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike are close by. A few meters away from the cottage is the village shop which offers local products and serves coffee. A little further away is a local pub serving a variety of local beers, hot meals and a roast on Sundays. For more shops, including supermarkets, cafes and restaurants, Cockermouth is about 8 minutes’ drive away, or Keswick is about 15 minutes over the Whinlatter Pass.

What an amazing stay!! Couldn't recommend more, wonderful location, easy to find, beautifully furnished, well supplied kitchen, nice easy walk to a lovely local pub and local shop. Only thing is the sofa isn't very comfortable. And I think due to COVID and removing all unnecessary soft furnishings there was no blanket for the TV room so recommend bringing one.
One extra I forgot is such a wonderful log fire, and good TV with access to Netflix and Amazon!

Lovely cottage, lovely location.
Lovely cottage, lovely location. Cleanliness exceptional. Bed was amazingly comfy. Only slight downside was the settee wasn’t comfortable and the bath took a long time to fill.

This is honestly the best holiday home we’ve ever stayed in - we cannot recommend it enough.
This is honestly the best holiday home we’ve ever stayed in - we cannot recommend it enough. It was perfectly equipped and beautifully appointed. The cleaning was of the highest standard and the whole property was very well prepared for our arrival.
The location is good - not as central was Derwent or Windermere, which we personally loved. A real gem of a property.

First impressions were superb.
First impressions were superb. Everything was of good quality and immaculately presented.
A well-equipped kitchen and a good bathroom.
The bed was extremely comfortable and as someone who rarely sleeps well away from home, the fact that I slept solidly for 7 nights was great. However we did find the chair and settee in the lounge much less satisfactory. It wasn't comfortable to sit in for long - perhaps chosen for its appearance rather than comfort.

Yan Yak is one of the best holiday cottages we have ever stayed in.
Yan Yak is one of the best holiday cottages we have ever stayed in. It's very spacious for a one-bedroom cottage with lots of storage space. Heating is very effective and the kitchen although small is very well equipped. A slightly higher settee would be an advantage but other than that nothing to fault.

Really comfortable cottage in pleasant village setting with good walks from the door.
Really comfortable cottage in pleasant village setting with good walks from the door. Loading and unloading awkward, parking by the nearby village hall fine. Outside space was poor and could be problematic for some visitors.

Lovely little cottage in a peaceful and picturesque setting.
Lovely little cottage in a peaceful and picturesque setting.
Kitchen well equipped and bed very comfortable. The garden is too much of a goldfish bowl to sit in, so we sat in the community garden on sunny afternoons.
My only slight niggle was that we were only provided with one bath and hand towel each for the week, so I had to use the washing machine. Would have been fine for a weekend break, but not seven days use.
Short drive into friendly Cockermouth for provisions and the local pub serves delicious meals.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable week!
