About this house rental
This is a lovely 2 bedroom 1 bath property. Large King bedroom, 2nd bedroom with queen bed, luxurious bath with oversized shower, living room, dining room, kitchen with laundry, outdoor walled garden with hot tub, deck/patios and pond. This property is no longer pet friendly.
200 year old Casa Carlos will feature a 1 ton 12,000 BTU mini split air conditioner beginning in May 2024!
Town – 3 blocks to Taos Plaza, 18 miles to Taos Ski Valley. Easy walk to shops, restaurants and galleries. National Register of Historic Places. Professionally landscaped and enclosed yard.
Casa Carlos, dating to the early 1800s, is one of the few properties in Taos available for rental that is listed in both the National Register of Historic Places (United States Department of Interior) and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties. The former home and studio of Charles “Carlos” Berninghaus, a noted Taos artist and son of Oscar Berninghaus, who was one of the founders of the Taos art colony in the 1920s. This beautiful example of an adobe casita was authentically restored and beautifully landscaped by its former owner, the founder of Taos’ El Monte Sagrado Resort. The interior, exterior and grounds have been carefully preserved and methodically tended to make this home a treasure for returning guests who call Casa Carlos their “home away from home”. A complete, historically sensitive renovation of all interior spaces was completed in 2020. A rare feature for a Taos vacation rental is the home’s private walled garden, which features a gorgeous pond, trickling water, shade trees, diverse and flowering plant life, visits from many beautiful varieties of birds and butterflies, and a grassy area. A private hot tub, multiple seating areas, an outdoor gas grill, and exterior lighting are also features of the garden. The current owners have refurnished the home in colonial period Mexican, Indian, Indonesian/Dutch, Romanian and California Rancho Monterey antique furnishings, as well as original art and print photography from Mexico and the Southwest.
The home features a beautiful King bedroom, and a 2nd bedroom containing a queen size bed, a mock kiva fireplace and historic charm.
The home is an easy stroll into town and Taos Plaza for meals, or utilize the home’s fully equipped modern kitchen to dine in, or grill outside and dine al fresco in the garden. The home is stocked with games, puzzles, playing cards/ poker chips, books, DVDs/movies, vinyl records and turntable, and cable/Blue Ray entertainment system for family time and relaxation in the beautifully furnished living area, which features coved viga ceilings, a kiva fireplace, and abundant natural light.
Additional architectural features include historically preserved coved and viga ceilings throughout, a gas kiva fireplace, custom ironwork, vintage Spanish Colonial lighting, radiant heated Saltillo tile floors, 3 foot thick 200 year old adobe walls, vintage and historical doors, and custom made cement tilework from San Luis Potosi, Mexico in the kitchen and bathroom.
Casa Carlos will restore your senses and “recharge your batteries” in a gorgeous and authentic home of history, character, and Northern New Mexican charm. “Nuestra casa es su casa/Our home is your home”.

We loved the home and had an amazing time. It is beautiful and the decor was very much New Mexico. It is in a great area where you can walk safely to the plaza. The garden is beautiful and tranquil. We had breakfast and coffee outside. We look forward to being back!

Casa Carlos was the perfect spot for my family of 3. Very easy check in and out process. Close to downtown shops and restaurants. Easy drive to Taos Ski valley. The place is exactly as pictured. Very comfortable. We enjoyed the hot tub and everything Casa Carlos had to offer. We are already planning our next trip back to Taos and will definitely stay here again.

Our third stay at this Taos Mexican-era adobe was something to look forward to. The proximity to the plaza, chatting with folks strolling La Loma, visiting with the neighbors met from past visits, the lush backyard, hot tub, and the spectacular interior design help make Casa Carlos feel like home in Taos.

Easy access to downtown and shopping. Great character and cosy. One issue is the bed in the main bedroom. It slopes to the middle and it is very firm. If that’s your preference, then I would say it is fine. It could use another mattress and topper to make this stay an A+.

My sister and I take our 92-year-old mother somewhere every year for a getaway, This year we chose Taos, since Mom hadn't been there in over 50 years. We had a lovely time walking the old town squares of Taos and Santa Fe. This home is walkable to several areas and close to a great grocery store. We walked every day, came home for a quick soak in the hot tub, then had a quiet dinner every evening. The home was sparkling clean and well stocked with everything we needed, as well as great instructions for using the amenities (fireplace, hot tub, etc.). We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone traveling to Taos. The charming, authentic decor really got us into the mood to enjoy the area, which a more modern hotel or condo wouldn't have done. Five Stars all the way! Just be prepared to navigate in Taos with it's narrow streets and odd corners, it's great to have a place where you can walk and not drive (or have to park) very much! Don't miss the drive up to the ski valley, it's so beautiful in the mountains!

You never know what to expect when arriving at a rental property. But we were pleasantly surprised!! Casa Carlos was welcoming, spacious, clean & well thought out. There are tags throughout the house that guide you so there is no confusion as to how anything works, etc. The location can't be beat. It is walking distance to the plaza, restaurants, shops. We would definitely stay there again!

Charming Casa Carlos
Property was lovely. The location was perfect. The caretakers, Bill and Linda were great. The kitchen and pantry were well stocked. Plenty of towels. The Casa did get a little warm for us during the day but might be fine for others (76 degrees). The indoor seating options were not that comfortable and the bed was too firm for us. But we are older and have arthritis so it might be fine for younger folks.

Casa Carlos is an amazing collision of early 19th century adobe architecture and modern luxury. That is, classic thick adobe walls, arched entrances, and vigas meet a hot tub under the stars, large walk-in shower, and radiant-heated Saltillo tile floors. For a home that is somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 years old, it has been lovingly restored with meticulous attention to detail. The décor is simply lovely as is the high desert lush oasis found in the backyard. The bed is very comfortable, and the kitchen is well equipped and a joy to cook in. Situated in a historic neighborhood on a slight rise, it is an easy 10-minute walk to the Taos Plaza. This is our second week-long stay and we’re angling to return in the future.

Perfect location and beautiful back garden with multiple seating areas made this property ideal. Great for stargazing in the evening. Easy walk to Taos Plaza. Numerous area restaurants are within a 10 minute walk. Home has a well equipped kitchen and was spotlessly clean. The caretaker Linda was helpful and responsive. We would love to return sometime.

Great house for a couple or family. We (couple) stayed here for a week and did our laptop-jobs from here during the day and explored Taos at night. Loved the house. Internet was sufficient if not exceptional. Taos in January - would skip unless you are a big skier. Property caretaker was very responsive and helpful.

Casa Carlos is simply gorgeous. Located a short stroll from the historic Taos Plaza, this very old adobe invites you to come inside. Look around: two foot thick, white-washed adobe walls, restored logs and woodwork of the viga ceilings, beautifully curated furniture and interior decor, a gas kiva fireplace and, for fun, a turntable. The traditional Saltillo tile floor is warm in cold weather thanks to radiant heating yet cool when it is hot outside. The king bed is very comfortable. The large light-filled tiled shower is luxurious. And, the kitchen is not only well stocked, but is a delightful place to prepare a meal on unique tile counters. Walk out the back door and your focus is drawn to a sandstone waterfall and pond in the far corner of a lovely back yard divided between the cooling landscape of grasses and trees and a hardscape of sculpted deck and sandstone pavers. The comfortable outdoor furniture, gas fired grill and hot tub draw you to relax outdoors under bright blue or starlit New Mexico skies. We instantaneously felt at home in this unique home and are planning to stay again at Casa Carlos on our next trip to Taos.

Casa Carlos is a historical prperty in Taos. It is only 4 blocks from the Taos Plaza and one of the best VRBO we have rented. The exterior is maintained the same as it was originally while the interior has been renovated. The backyard is lovely with a water feature and hot tub, Perfect area for our dog. A number of dog friendly restaurants are nearby and there are excellent hiking trails just outside the city area. The altitude is 7000 ft and therefore the weather is perfect, certainly cooler than our home in Tucson.

We stayed here for 5 weeks so we really got to know this house, and we loved it, no complaints at all. The house was clean, equipped with everything we needed to feel comfortable, and everything worked (i.e. tv, hot tub, dishwasher, washer/dryer). We definitely would stay here again. We feel very lucky to have found such a great spot

This place was the best we’ve experienced in all the years we’ve rented houses either with VRBO or AB&B!!
Great location near village center, bed was great, everything you needed was available. Coffee maker, utensils, paper products(tp, paper towels) etc. lots of space with 2nd bed room, back yard garden was fantastic. Very quiet for eating ,reading, and just relaxing with the soft sound of the fountain/ pond!!!
Definitely recommend this place and we will most likely rent again if we come back this way

The description was accurate - the house had everything we needed; wonderful Taos decor. The washer dryer turned out to be handy. The hot tub was great after a day of hard hiking. 10 minute walk to the main plaza. My only complaint? The very sturdy bedframe was a bit hard on knees and toes in the dark so put a white towel over the corner so it is more visible! Just a wonderful stay. Would absolutely stay here again. Highly recommended.
