Spruce Spray Cottage is the perfect location to get away from it all, with breathtaking ocean views and privacy both inside & outside. The cottage is located on Spruce Head Island, which is accessible by a causeway linking it to the mainland with Port Clyde, South Thomaston, Rockland and Camden nearby. In the 1900’s, Spruce Head Island was an active quarry island.
Spruce Spray is truly the quintessential Maine cottage. The original section was constructed in 1965 as a summer cottage. Over the years, there have been multiple additions and modifications transforming the cottage into a year-round retreat. Spruce Spray’s main living space is open concept, with plenty of room for a family of 6 to enjoy. It is open, light, and airy, perfect for socializing yet there are several places to get away for quiet reflection. The kitchen is well equipped with all the necessary tools for cooking meals while enjoying the ocean views. There is a large dining table that seats 6, which also provides the perfect location for playing board games or working on a puzzle. The living room has plenty of comfortable seating for all; whether looking out at the ocean, watching TV or enjoying the warmth of the wood burning fireplace. There is a cozy reading nook with telescope to view Seal Island or gaze at the evening stars. The cottage offers three bedrooms and two baths. Two bedrooms are located on the first floor: one with two twin beds and the other with a queen size bed (which overlooks the rear deck and pond). The first-floor bathroom, separates the two bedrooms, and has a shower. The master bedroom is located on the 2nd floor, with a queen-sized bed and a large window seat that looks out onto the ocean. It is the perfect location to read a book or simply enjoy the views. The master bathroom is equipped with a bathtub/shower. As mentioned, we limit guests to 6 people and do not allow pets. Should you require additional space our neighboring cottage, Seal Cottage sleeps 4. (VRBO # 1831893).
Spruce Spray is surrounded by beautiful gardens and large open lawn area. There are two decks offering vastly different experiences. The large oceanfront deck allows one to feel perched over the ocean as though on a boat. From this vantage point, you can watch the lobster boats returning from the sea to their moorings, follow the birds as they glide over the coastline and be on the lookout for the occasional seal visitor. The rear deck is the perfect spot to lounge, curl up with a good book while enjoying the sounds of the trickling waterfall in the small pond. There is also a picnic table and outdoor grill on the lawn area, located right above the rocky coastline.
Your whole vacation could be spent simply relaxing at the cottage. The sandy beach and protected harbor allow for great access to the water for kayaking. Whitehead Island is just 1 mile across the harbor or stay close and explore the coastline around Spruce Head Island. If you prefer to stay on the land, the sandy beach is a great place to search for sea shells and sea glass or explore the rocky coastal edge along the large granite formations.
There is much to do and see nearby! For the most picturesque lobster shack meal, McLoon’s is a must, located within walking distance from Seal Cottage. Also, within walking distance, is the Lobster Lane Bookshop, a local treasure filled to the brim with books in every genre. Birch Point Beach State Park, located 6 miles away, offers breathtaking views of Penobscot Bay from a sandy crescent shaped beach. The perfect location for picnicking, fishing and swimming. Nearby Owls Head State Park and Lighthouse offers a nice walk and Owls Head Transportation Museum is a must see for those who enjoy aviation and antique vehicles. Fifteen minutes away, Rockland is famed for its cultural scene, including Farnsworth Art Museum & Wyeth Center, CMCA (Center for Maine Contemporary Art), The Maine Lighthouse Museum, and The Strand Theater. Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse provides beautiful photo opportunities. There are many fantastic places to dine in the area, from fine dining at the award-winning Primo Restaurant, sushi at Suzuki’s Sushi Bar, Ada's Kitchen, The Causeway Restaurant in St. George..... There is something for everyone. A short drive away, Camden known as the "Jewel of the Coast", is a quintessential Maine town filled with quaint shops, restaurants, and beautiful scenic views. Camden also offers abundant hiking opportunities, including Mt. Battie (also accessible by car), whose summit provides a bird's eye view of the surrounding islands. Maine has a way of creeping into your heart, don't be surprised if you find yourself planning your return. So many of our guests have felt the very same way and have chosen to stay at Spruce Spray year after year! We are so grateful for our repeat guests, they are the reason we have such a limited calendar for 2023.

On arrival, we knew from Spruce Spray's stunning view from the deck that we had picked the right house to stay on Spruce Head Island. The property is off the beaten path, spacious, and quite private. Barbara the host, was on top of our arrival and a water pipe repair that needed to be taken care of while we were there. All seamless, and not disruptive to our stay.
The rocks are incredible to explore out to the point. Watching the lobster boats became a daily activity over coffee, and cocktails. We enjoyed fires in the fireplace at night, as we talked about our day and next day's adventure. We had wonderful local outings, but always looked forward to getting back to the house and hanging out, watching the activity below in the harbor while preparing dinner. The kitchen is extremely well-stocked.
Unfortunately, McLoons had already closed for the season. However, Aphrodite Oyster was opened. We loved the fresh and delicious oysters so much we ordered them twice during our stay. Aprodite Oyster is housed in a quaint building, minutes away, all on the honor system.
The house has beautiful wooden planked floors, and lots of cozy places to sit. We all loved the telescope to watch the active working boats, shore birds, and sailing vessels.
Spruce Spray created a memorial time with friends.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Spruce Spray Cottage. The location is amazing - right on the water with views of lobster boats and nearby islands. The home is in great condition with everything provided. Our expectations were exceeded.

What a beautiful house to enjoy our Maine vacation with family and friends! Wonderful deck to enjoy a morning cup of coffee on as the lobster boats head out on their daily runs or a glass of CellarDoor wine while enjoying the beautiful colors of a Maine sunset.

My husband and I spent a week at Spruce Spray Cottage. Absolutely a beautiful home, right on the ocean. The deck was where we spent most of our time-so peaceful and at the same time we enjoyed watching all the lobster boats coming and going. The house is immaculate, even better than the pics on VRBO. Barbara and Chuck have created a unique rental experience-it feels like a home rather than a rental with all their personal touches. Highly recommend this house and hope to be back in the future. McLoon's down the street is a gem, great lobster rolls and more. Thank you for the wonderful experience. Mary and Henry Lally

One of the loveliest vacation properties I've ever rented! The views are magnificent from both inside the house and on the deck. The house has a wonderful floor plan, is in top-notch condition and is stocked with everything you could possibly need. We loved watching the activity in the little harbor next door as well as coastal birds and a seal! We walked to McLoon's twice for the best lobster rolls and crab cakes ever. The owners were very accommodating and accessible though we didn't really need to contact them once we arrived.

My family and I recently stayed at Spruce Spray cottage and cannot say enough great things about it. The house was perfect. It was clean and very well stocked. They thought of everything. I especially appreciated the bottle of wine the owners left for us to enjoy.
The deck....and just about every room in the house...offered fantastic views of the water and the lobster boats in the cove. There was plenty of seating if you wanted to sit on the deck, in the living room area or dining room table. The open concept allowed all of us to be together even if someone was in the kitchen cooking.
As for the water fun, we brought a kayak and rented a paddle board from a local business. The small beach to the left of the cottage allowed us ample space to launch the kayak and board. After looking around the island I realized how fortunate we were to have the beach...even if it was small. Most of the homes don't have a beach option to take off from.
I would strongly recommend this house for anyone who wants to be on the water, has high standards regarding cleanliness, and wants to be convenient to towns they can visit in the event of rainy weather.

Right on a harbor, the cottage is private but the surroundings nearby include a busy lobstering scene and gulls coming and going on the rocks below. House is nicely furnished and maintained. Easy drive to Rockland. Can’t wait to be back next year.

We have enjoyed going to Maine for 30 years.
This property is a gem! We literally spent most of the week at the house, enjoying the view and peaceful feeling. We would absolutely rent this property again!
Thanks Barbara for great memories!

I spent 2 weeks with family and friends at Spruce Spray Cottage in June 2016. Spruce Head Island is a magical island and the cottage is a unique and exclusive property perched on the Maine coast with waves splashing on the rocks at the foot of the home’s foundation. The location is private and the view of the harbor’s fishing boats and Whitehead Island are the best Maine has to offer. The traditional cottage is beautifully renovated and lovingly filled with a mix of antiques and contemporary furniture. Some details in the cottage that were greatly appreciated were the great comfortable beds, the extra refrigerator in the utility room, the beautiful dining table looking out at the harbor through the large picture windows, and the telescope to view the harbor and look for seals. The pictures on the internet give a very accurate view of the cottage layout but seeing it in person for the first time is really spectacular.
My family and I have been coming to Spruce Head Island and the surrounding area for many years and enjoy many of the same activities each year as well as new adventures. Don’t miss McLoon’s, Miller’s, Miranda Café, Beth’s Farm, Port Clyde Kayaks or any of the local lighthouses. Really don’t miss Monhegan Island, Port Clyde, Rockland or Camden or easy day trips to Belfast or Booth Bay Harbor.
Whether you spend your days exploring the area or sitting on the deck in the Adirondack chairs watching the activities in the harbor you can absolutely not go wrong spending your vacation at Spruce Spray. I can’t wait to get back there in 2017.

We have rented 6 different cottages on Spruce Head Island over the past years. Spruce Spray is by far our favorite and we will be renting it again next year and hopefully for many years to come. The cottage is right on the cove -- there is nothing that compares to sitting on the deck virtually right over the water with a cup of coffee watching lobster boats go out in the morning or the sun setting behind the neighboring islands in the evenings. The view is the best we've seen on Spruce Head. The cottage itself is perfect -- beautifully and comfortably decorated, combining cozy spaces with enough room to spread out. The reading nook is delightful. The back deck by the waterfall and koi pond off the bedroom is a fabulous secret garden. Lots to do, see, and visit in the local area -- art galleries, wonderful restaurants and general stores, intriguing (non-touristy) villages, great hikes, kayaking, beaches and lighthouses. Spruce Spray is Maine at its finest and lives up to the state's motto: the way life should be.

If you dream about falling asleep to the sound of waves gently breaking onshore, or if you would like to relax on a sunny deck and watch the local lobstermen come and deliver their lobsters to the local distributer each afternoon, then Spruce Spray Cottage is for you! Set right on the shoreline of a cove in Spruce Head, Maine, Spruce Spray Cottage has everything you might want in a vacation rental. The property is well maintained and well stocked with essentials such as a propane grill, two refrigerators, a fireplace, a big screen LCD TV, cable and internet service, a marvelous day bed overlooking the ocean and three beautiful bedrooms. Bicycling local roads to either Owls Head or to Port Clyde are true adventures well worth the effort! I highly recommend you consider Spruce Spray Cottage for your next vacation rental!
