Finca Magdalena has a special place in the history of the island and it's well worth the 20 minute walk (or short drive) up from Balgue. The building and rooms are getting a bit tired but the overall surroundings make up for it (trees, plants, birds) Charming, authentic, friendly, we absolutely loved it here and extended our stay. You're also conveniently located to visit the wonderful Cafe Campestre down on the main road, which we did countless times (or you can eat onsite, which we also did multiple times)

I absolutely love it here! This is my second time staying and I would come back for the true authentic feel of the island. Amazing staff, wonderful food, incredible views!

Breakfast was delicious and the location was perfect for walking around the farm seeing petroglyphs and hiking up the volcano . The staff were helpful and very friendly . The gardens are lovely and there is a beautiful and refreshing natural pool surrounded by trees to swim in .

The Finca is part of a cooperative. We saw many staff, all were very friendly and eager to help. The food was always freshly cooked and tasted great. There was a lovely swimming pool, created by damming the river, kept in good condition. Bikes and guides were arranged promptly and efficiently. The coffee, they grow organic coffee commercially, was outstanding.
This is an economic, rural, hostel, which we thought great. One suggestion we have is to include vegan options with protein in their menus.

The staff and the area are so nice
The road up to it isn't the best

Very friendly staff, nice view, quiet, can take a hike up behind the finca to see the petroglyphs. Cheap. Community run. Nice little village at base of mountain
Pretty spartan but honestly think that's fine if you go in openminded about it being quite barebones. More adventure than comfort, but fine for a nights stay

Nice girls who run the business, gave me a private tour through the coffee plantation (after I asked for it)
Location in the middle of nature
Very basic accommodation, what is fine but unfortunately it was very dirty. there was no toilet seat in my bathroom, the sheets smelled weird and it didn’t feel homely. The shared bathroom area was very dirty, and no toiletpaper to be found. Lack of communication during check in, no informations about the finca was offered, I wasn’t informed about food options etc. The way there is barely makeable with a scooter, must be a good driver!

the staff is really nice and benevolent.
I booked a dorm but, it was really easy and cheap to get a privat room. the view there is really amazing and you are in the real nature and you can see a lot of animals there. the rooms has ventilators, it’s not to hot. I felt save there in general. if you wanna do the Vulcan tour than it’s the best place to stay, because the route starts behind the finca. when you rent a scooter than you can explore a lot from the island.
it’s hard to walk the whole way with the backpack from the main road. you need to walk from the main road to the finca for like 10-15 min.
there is no kitchen for guests, so you can’t cook for yourself. the food there was good, but also a little pricey. the busses do not drive often & take a lot of time.

This lovely family-run hostel at the base of the Maderas Volcano is unpretentious, warm and friendly, and the *perfect* spot to get an early start to your hike up the volcano. It's a farming cooperative of 23 families that started in the 70s... they sell delicious ORGANIC coffee beans that they grow! Organic coffee is kinda hard to find in Nicaragua. This isn't a fancy place by any means, but the gardens and view are absolutely beautiful, there's a big deck with hammocks and tables, and the staff are super friendly... plus, you're supporting sustainability!

The location SUCKS!! EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND AND there’s nothing to do around there. Optional coffee tour that’s it. I had 3 accidents on the bumpy roads getting there!!
