Charming boutique hotel

Gozan is a unique, comfortable, welcoming property in the best location, transportation everywhere, short walk to Gion, tons of restaurants, the market, scenic river & river walk. The property is spotless. The beds are comfortable. We chose the best place to stay while on our extended trip to Kyoto. The lobby included free water, coffee, tea. We felt at home at Gozan.
All front desk employees are very good and accommodating.
However, we must give special recognition to ‘Axe’ at the front desk. Axe was exceptional in his professionalism, friendliness, and excellent proficiency with the English language. He was knowledgeable and always helpful. Axe was enjoyable to interact with and an absolute pleasure to see at the front desk. He is an asset to Gozan, definitely, and we thank him for making our stay even more enjoyable.
Because I read negative reviews…Regarding the breakfast in the next door cafe, we used the coupons but paid a little extra for a latte or cappuccino, as the regular included coffee was not the best. Our room had a kitchenette with a good size refrigerator and microwave - so fruit, nuts, seaweed we stock up on anyway when traveling.
Gozan was the perfect base for us to comfortably experience Kyoto and beyond. We took buses easily for trips to temples, Miyajima off Hiroshima, Miyama, Uji, Amanohashidate, Ine Bay, biking through Asuka Village (lovely) etc etc.
We would stay at Gozan again. Thank you everyone at Gozan, and thank you, Axe.

- Beautiful room
- so so close to Gion and Pontocho, down the street from the train station
- friendly staff who spoke English
- a bit strange that you handed over your key when leaving but it was nice not having to keep track of it
- advertised 24/7 staffing but once tried to leave around 5am and no one was at the desk. had to wake someone up to let us out.

Great location. Spotlessly clean, well-equipped. Helpful, friendly staff.

Very well located spacious room with washer/dryer and equipped kitchen. I used the wash only cycle and hung things to dry. No problems. The kitchen has a range of plug-in appliances. In the lobby you can always get more water and when the desk is open there is good quality expresso coffee available as needed for those staying at the hotel.
Nearby to the hotel is Sanjo Station and across the street from the station are local buses. As a tourist, I enjoyed the buses so I could 'see' the city. There is also a mart to get basic supplies between the station and the hotel.
This hotel is central to the Gion District. I spent three separate days east of the Kamo river to see these main things and more -
1. North - Shirakawa River walk, Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, Ginkakuji (Silver Pavillion) and Philosopher's Walk.
2. East - Jidai Matsuri Festival of the Ages Oct 22 procession passes by this hotel, Higashiyama and Hanamakoji street. This Matsuri together with the Blue Note Tokyo and Osaka Aquarium were the three best things I did over a 29 day trip to Japan. Try to get to this Matsuri which is more rewarding in person than the excellent YouTube video of it.
3. South - Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka streets, and Yasaka Shrine. I also went on a different day to Fushimi Inari Shrine which is south of Gion and only an 8 minute train ride from Kyoto Station.
Across the Kamo River is a Starbucks and the Pontocho alley full of restaurants. Venture a little bit further to the Nashiki Market. Fabulous location this hotel.
If you are changing accommodation from Kyoto to Osaka or vice versa, I recommend the Rapid Limited Express Kyo-garaku train from Kyoto-kawaramachi Station to Umeda-Osaka station running weekends and public holidays at the standard fare. Will attach two photos of the train and yes there are gardens in two of the carriages.
I wrote the things below so that people would be aware. I don't think any of them are more than slightly inconvenient.
- It is hotel policy to leave your keys at the desk while you are out. On my first day, I headed out to Amanohashidate and Ine Bay at 6.30am kind of dropping my keys under the counter. It might be a good idea to have a secure box to leave keys for when the desk is not yet open.
- There is very limited food-prep counter space in the kitchen although all the appliances you would likely need are there.
- I stayed here for seven nights and my room faced the street on a high floor. There was a lot of truck traffic one only morning that woke me. Ambulances also use this street and you are lucky if your only involvement is to wake for a minute and identify an ambulance is passing by.

Good location
Although we had everything we needed it was tight quarters as is typical for Japanese hotels.

Where do I start, the staff was one of the best things about this hotel. From the moment I walked in they were courteous, attentive, and helpful beyond what you would expect. Luke, Ax and Nakagawa san went out of their way to make me and my group feel welcomed as well as others in our group that were not even staying there. Free coffee, tea, cold bottled water were available in the lobby at all times. The rooms were exceptional with nice wood decor inside and lovely bamboo decor in the hallways. Every floor had two FREE washing machines with detergent and softener to use. The third floor rooms had a washing machine IN THE ROOM! Each room on every floor had a stove, microwave, toaster oven and refrigerator if you felt like making your own meals.
The location could also not be beat. It was just block from the Sanjo metro station and another few blocks from the famed Kyoto Gion district with lots of places to eat and drink.
I really can’t say enough great things about this hotel and HIGHLY recommend staying here when you visit Kyoto.
The manager needs to reopen the bar because there were shelves of delicious spirits that weren’t available but only temping to look at. When I spoke with him he said that when they reopened after COVID it has become difficult to staff the bar as he would like. He did promise to have it open on my visit next year. 😀

Perfekte Preis-Leistung, sehr sauber, super Lage und Personal sehr zuvorkommend! Wir waren bei dem Preis sehr überrascht! Auch der Stil hat uns sehr gefallen.

It's was very clean and the staff is responsive. Most of the staff did speak English which was good. They replaced towels every day.
The room is too small for guests with even small suitcases. We had to do some rearrangment to find a place for two suitcases. The room didn't have openable window (neither a balcony) so the unclean air in the room did make me cough the first night before i get used to it. There is an air freshener machine in the room but it rather takes place than clear the air.
When we asked about a room with an openable window both of the receptionists said there were no rooms with openable windows in the entire building (One of them said "due to security reasons". İn Japan, really?). We did read reviews on Google left by guests staying here before and surprising no one commented about this issue, and this is an issue. Two reviews even were saying that they had problems with the window which did not very well and due to this it was noisy inside. The other one said they hardly open the window in the room.
It is sufficient to conclude that there are rooms with openable windows in the hotel but the staff seemed to have lied about it (we don't know why).
Don't book unless you ensure that you are in a room with an openable window.
The room with the garden on the photos, not sure if it is from this building.

The apartment was beautiful and spacious. The decor was lovely. The rooms were clean. The outdoor area was a perfect place to relax and eat. Bathing in the outdoor spa was really fun! There was a dividing wall to separate the two halves of the space which was fine for us but would be great for couples traveling together. Having two washers and driers was very convenient. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It was very quiet despite being on a main road. The location was super convenient for walking to Gion and Pontocho area.
Nothing. It was an excellent place to stay.

We have choosen this hotel as it was recomended by most of the hotel and we confirmed everything. Really nice hotel close to the subway so we have reached many destination. We stayed 6 night and the frontdesk especially Axy was always smili g and helped for any request we have. We suggest this hotel whe we really enjoyed our stay.
.
No breakfast bust it written in the hotel description but it was not a problem because just outside there was a bar for it so it is not a problem. We recommend and will stay again in this hotel.

the front office staff were very kind and helpful. We loved their food recommendations and ability to get us reservations at places we thought we might never get seated. Beyond this, the rooms were clean, well organized, and comfortable. We would definitely recommend the property to other travelers
the kitchen was poorly stocked and the entrance way/foyer of our room was very dark....but no major complaints

The room was beautifully furnished and also had a washing machine. The staff was very friendly and ready to help out. The location was quiet but rather well connected.

Very cozy and well made hotel rooms and apartments. It’s little small but this is usual in Japan. Even relatively cheap parking lot in the street next to the hotel (if there is place)

A very good deal. Close to bus stop and train (Kaihan Line) station. Walking distance to Kamo River. The room is surprisingly ample with a small kitchen area, a sofa, and a coffee table.

The Gozan Hotel is a super cute structure in Kyoto near a lot of activities, points of interests and Temples. The staff and the boss is very friendly and helpful. The room is clean and confortable with a small kitchen where you can cook something or have a tea. I was there with my sister for 5 nights and it was very good. The breakfast is ok, a coffee and a sandwich in the near Cafe, non so much but is good and cheap and the girls at the Cafe are very kind. If i'll ever be in Kyoto again I would choose Gozan again.
