La Catrina de Alcalá is a small, 13-room hotel located smack in the center of the action, located right on the Andador Turístico - Oaxaca's main and beloved pedestrian street. It features a dining area in a plant-filled interior courtyard and has character to spare. In spite of its location in the heart of the tourist area, the rooms are very quiet and sleep is peaceful. The rooms and bathrooms are huge, well-appointed, and nicely decorated, with lots of storage and all other appointments, including A/C. The staff is excellent, from Rocio at the front desk to Oscar, who does it all, and including all the dining staff, the darling lady making tortillas as you watch and the lovely evening greeter. Prices include continental breakfast with fresh juice, fresh fruit and local (sweet) bread rolls.

I like the cleanliness of the room. Also liked the location of the hotel being close to everything.
We only got one face towel even after the first day. There were no information provided on the hotel amenities. Did not realize there was a wading pool. The second floor and the roof balcony information were never transmitted.
There is no way of communicating after we checked out. We may have left a camera and the contact us feature in their website does not work.

Location
Our room had no outside windows

Friendly, helpful staff. Quiet and restful, authentic and historic. Lovely garden and fountain.
Street closed to traffic. Might have like a detailed description of this before arrival. ( maybe there was but I don’t remember it)
However, the staff went over and above to order taxis and give directions etc.

Everything! The best location to walk around with ease and felt cery safe. So central but without noise. Spotlessly clean and very kind, helpful staff in all areas from reception, dining / kitchen staff nd the wondergil Oscar. Thankyou to all of you. Good sized room. A real gem of a small hotel.

Great location in the historic center. Just a few steps from the Zocalo and a few minutes to Santo Domingo. Very friendly and helpful staff. The room was very spacious and clean. Continental breakfast included a pastry, fresh fruit, juice and coffee or tea. The Wifi worked well.
Everything was good

The hotel is ideally located on the main pedestrian street, in the middle of everything. Somehow, the interior was very quiet. The staff was all fantastic, friendly, and helpful. Anything we needed they jumped at the opportunity to be of service.
The CONTINENTAL breakfast of bread, fruit, juice and coffee was tasty, and the other food on the menu was delicious, thanks to the extraordinary chef Victor.
There are water stations in the hallways where you can refill your bottles.
The hotel and rooms were clean and quiet.
The rooms were very basic and small. For the price, we expected more.
Also, the rooms are all interior, so you have to trade privacy for daylight. And the window has to be closed, meaning the room is never ventilated.
Coffee outside of breakfast hours would have been nice.
Also, the property could have used some TLC: the furniture was beat up and looked cheap. Also, the light bulbs were bluish, which made everything look cheap.

Our experience was awesome. The staff was friendly, the place was beautiful and peaceful. The location is within walking distance from everything. Would definitely stay here again.

La Catrina is perfectly situated on the Alcala. In the midst of everything but My room was perfectly situated & very quiet. This is my second stay & I enjoyed it immensely. The hotel is spotlessly clean, room was large and very comfortable. Breakfasts were delicious. The staff were very helpful. I love visiting the art gallery which is part of the hotel. I shall definitely stay there again! I highly recommend!
nothing.

the location was perfect for us. the street was quiet. no traffic.
No ventilation in the bathroom. It was always musty smelling.

Location couldn't be better and the room was large with good aircon, big comfortable bed, plenty of hot water and excellent WIFI. Staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel and room were clean
Furniture in the room was pretty cheap and in need of replacement (drawers not closing properly for instance) and was totally out of character with the age and style of the hotel in general. Safe in room only suitable for cash and passport, far too small for a laptop or tablet.
The included continental breakfast was ok but having to sign for it every morning where you had to fill in the amount (nil) and tip was not acceptable. Its either included or not. Being effectively forced to tip every morning isn't something that guest should have to do.
Main issue with hotel was the NOISE. The courtyard acted as an echo chamber and with every room opening out on to it this was a major problem. From 6am the staff arrive to set up for breakfast making noise, breakfast starts at 7am equalling more noise then to cap it all, loud music is turned on from 8am. Because they close the front door in the evenings (understand the reasons for this) and guests are not given front door keys (unlike many other hotels I have stayed in throughout Mexico) you have to use the knocker to be let in...more noise, particularly with late arriving guests. To be woken up at 11pm by drunk and loud guests shouting and laughing in the courtyard with no respect for other guests is not acceptable. Hotel staff should be aware of this issue and take action for the sake of other hotel guests.
If this had been a low cost hotel then these issues, whilst still being unacceptable, would have been more palatable however this hotel is priced towards the higher end of properties in Mexico (£80 per night for my stay) so I was not happy with my stay here and would not recommend this hotel.

I stayed in La Catrina de Alcala for 9 nights and found the service and cleanliness to be outstanding! Victor S, provided warm hospitality, whether checking us in or serving the daily breakfast: delicious fresh fruit and juice, delectable pastries, and coffee. You can see by his attentiveness that he takes great pride in ensuring that hotel guests enjoy their stay. Oscar made and served delicious pizza on the rooftop terrace, which is a fantastic option for evenings when you want enjoy the fresh air and watch the street vendors and tourist as they wander Calle Macedonio Alcala below. Rocio provided us with essential information about transportation options to the outlying villages where we liked to wander markets and visit artisan homes. She was always so knowledgeable and friendly,
Our room was very spacious and immaculately clean! White walls, white bathroom tiles, and glass shower were spotless. Don't worry, the room wasn't a sterile looking white box! In the colorful Mexican style, it had warm crimson accent furniture and locally woven textiles/pillows on the beds. The traditional herringbone brick ceiling and old world doors blend tradition with modernity.
The location is two blocks from the Zocalo, which is always an enjoyable place to visit just to people watch. A few blocks beyond the Zocalo are the Benito Juarez and 20 of November indoor markets. They are not be be missed for first time visitors to Oaxaca, as they introduce you to the amazing variety of delicious foods and crafts of the region.
I will most definitely book this hotel again for the WARM and HELPFUL hospitality, CLEANLINESS, and LOCATION!
I would suggest providing a refrigerator in room or access to ice (from purified water).

nice old building, good breakfast.
no proper windows in the room (small windows onto a closed courtyard, so little breeze, air was stuffy.) if you wanted the existing windows open, you had to leave your place open and exposed to anyone on the main floor.

From the beginning to the end, we had a fantastic time. Victor and the other staff members were so caring that it felt like we were family. Maybe just as important is that the location is prime! Doesn’t get much better than this place. I will be back and looking forward to more of that one of a kind Mezcal with star anise!

Their bread is delicious and is homemade, the staff is truly helpful and friendly. The location couldn’t be better, it was the perfect spot while going in and out trough the city museums and mercados. Highly recommended. Will come back for sure.
