Trad. Küche essen möchte.

The Onsen in our room was amazing.
Dinner was a very special experience, we liked most of it, some of it was weird for a western tongue, but the presentation was super aesthetic and the effort that was put into it highly noticeable.
Breakfast was a little to weird for us but we managed with it.
Both Dinner and breakfast are fixed menus, I think they should have some options to change some of the dishes to better fit westerners, especially children.

Beautiful, old-school style Japanese onsen. We opted for a room with a private onsen and we were staggered at how large the room was (on two levels). The private onsen bath with the garden was simply stunning. The food at dinner was also perfect, as was the breakfast the next day. Loved the Yukata service too. The staff were very attentive. The free drinks area also great. Highly recommend.
Nothing to comment on here!

Traditional food was exceptional. Accommodated some western elements in certain rooms and dining tables. In-processing was delightful. Public areas were beautiful and interesting. Room with private hot springs bath for those uncomfortable with public nudity. Bus stop for nearby attractions.
Not on main transportation line, requires some planning and connections. Taxi from JR train station was 10000 yen.

We had a good 2 nights stay, the staff was beyond helpful and nice all along. The food was good both at dinner and breakfast, and it was easy to enjoy the onsen facilities. The room was very spacious, we loved its private open-air bath, and foot bath.
The room was comfortable but lacked charm and decoration, it was very blank and impersonal. The ryokan is very traditional and has been actively receiving guests for 360 years old, it is impressive, but some parts of it feel way too outdated and old and, as much as I enjoyed the cooking in the style of ancient times for example, I couldn't help but think that these prices levels require a touch more comfort (the common parts were warmed with fuel heaters and the scent of it was very unpleasant). Unfortunately it didn't feel like a good value for money

Everything was great! Dinner, private bath, breakfast, facilities and most importantly the service! Staffs were super friendly and helpful...! I went near my birthday and they even prepared some simple surprises for me, I am very touched! The ryokan interior was nice and cozy with many facilities too, I highly recommend! :)

Paying for an experience not just a night at a hotel. Cannot recommend staying here highly enough!

Out of seven accommodations that we stayed in, Matsuzakaya Honten was the very best, excelling in all categories and the new standard to which we now hold other ryokans. They offered top-notch service, thoughtful hospitality, and generous amenities including free drinks! The private onsens were super luxurious and easy to reserve, the facilities traditional but beautiful and extremely well-maintained, and the delicious food served with upscale presentation. We were beyond pleased with our stay.
The only thing that could make this an even better experience is if they offered a shuttle service.

Everything was amazing from the history to the architecture to the onsen.

Steeped in history - 300 years old, but wonderfully maintained! Staff were also great, from little touches like greeting us at the outside entrance (timing it with the bus schedules!) to being super accommodating with booking the private onsen. We didn’t realise onsens close at 10am and don’t reopen until 3pm (for cleaning) wanted to get a soak in before we checked out and missed the last booking - fortunately they let us have a quick soak before we checked out.
Food was also amazing, and although it’s expensive, it’s worth the money! Wish we checked in earlier to chill and fully try out the amenities - nice tea/snack/wine/sake bar all included with the stay.
Nothing! Wish we booked in another night!

We had an absolutely delightful stay at this hotel! The hospitality was exceptional - the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and always were happy to answer any questions we had.
The food was a highlight of our experience. We enjoyed eight courses of traditional Japanese cuisine, and each dish had beautiful presentation and was incredibly tasty.
We booked family room with private onsen. The private onset was a luxurious touch, offering complete relaxation and tranquility. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an immersive Japanese cultural experience!
Thanks again for everything!

I went for my birthday and the staff was so amazing! They gave me all these special treats for my birthday and I didn't even tell them it was my birthday they gleaned it from my check in details. They were very accommodating in general and having the private onsen was amazing. The beds were so comfortable, the staff was amazing, they had free drinks in the common area constantly which was great. The welcome drink was also a very nice touch. Be prepared to be pampered!
Nothing, everything was great!

Dinner and breakfast were both excellent multi-course meals of Kaiseki cuisine. While I eat everything, my wife and kids are vegetarian. We had let them know in advance and they customized the food for all of us.
The onsen in our room as well as the public one were very relaxing and the room itself was extremely comfortable. It would be hard to find a ryokan that tops this one!
It was all good.

loved how comfortable the beds were. the private onsen was a bonus. the food was fantastic. the staff were all so accommodating and friendly.
you will need a car to travel around Hakone but if you only want to stay in the hotel the location doesn’t matter.
