About this house rental
SAUNA INSTALLATION: We are building a sauna on the property and aiming for completion before December, 2024.
Welcome to the Mushroom House, a one-of-a-kind coastal escape. Located on the Big Mesa in secluded Bolinas, this rustic visionary structure, built almost 50 years ago, stands boldly, peering down at the Pacific Ocean from its 3-story perch. Just 50 meters from the steep south-facing cliffs that drop down to the rugged beach and a 10 minute walk from nearby Bolinas Beach, the Mushroom House offers expansive views of Duxbury Reef, Stinson Beach, and Bolinas Ridge. Featured in House Beautiful magazine in the 70's as an architectural wonder, the house is truly like no other.
Forget the crowds, traffic and noise of everyday life, just take in the sound of the Pacific Ocean and seaside birds as you slow down to the pace of this magical place.
This 1500 square foot house has three floors. The first two are the mushroom stem. On the first floor, behind a swinging bookshelf, you will find a bunk bed (two beds) and full bathroom with shower. The large bedroom on the second floor has a queen size Necatar bed, 1/2 bathroom, and a beautiful view of the ocean from where you will lay your head. The third floor is the mushroom's cap, featuring a hexagonal, wide-open floor plan that includes a kitchen, living room, and dining area. There is a lovely loft with a queen size Nectar mattress that has pillow views of the ocean and mountain ridge. A full bathroom is right off the living room.
The sleeping arrangement of two queen beds and bunk bed allows for a capacity of 6 occupants. The house is ideal for couples, friends, and families, but there is a spiral staircase between each floor and a ladder to the loft, so convenience and safety should be taken into account when bringing small children or the elderly.
The third floor great room has new wood floors, an 18-foot high ceiling with stained glass at the top, and breathtaking views wherever you look. A sliding glass door leads to the dramatic deck where you can enjoy sunbathing, reading, and al fresco meals. You can also curl up inside and watch a movie on the 65'' LG TV, stay connected if you want through high speed internet, or listen to music on the bluetooth speaker.
The town of Bolinas is an easy half-mile walk from the house, where you will find a quirky little downtown and lovely public beach. Bolinas has a post office (no waiting), a very nice restaurant (The Coast Cafe), a neighborhood bar (Smiley's - they serve burritos now too!) a library, several boutiques, and two grocery stores: The General Store has just about everything you need; The People’s Store, set back from the street, has organic fruits and vegetables and a good dose of Bolinas charm.
The Mushroom House is extremely relaxing and hard to leave, but local activity is too wonderful to ignore. A walk to town and the beach is a must. If you like to hike, don't miss the Palomarin trail to Bass Lake and Alamere Falls, one of the most beautiful and satisfying hikes in the Bay Area. Just 10 minutes away from the house, the trail winds along the coast, heads inland, hits a beautiful swimming lake, then ends back at the beach where a roaring creek tumbles over a steep cliff onto the sand. Road biking, surfing, tide pooling, mountain biking, boogie-boarding, sand-castle building, and many other possibilities await.
The Mushroom House is a gem. It is not new or shiny, but it is warm, homey, comforting, and closely connected to nature's wonders. Migrating whales have been seen from the deck. A pelican carrying a salmon was spotted through the window by a guest doing dishes. The cleansing ocean air graces this special home every day, inside and out. Come experience the simple life.
Note: there is a Ring located next to the front door that monitors the front yard.

Ideal location for everything Bolinas and West Marin. Cozy, low maintenance and beach friendly . We loved the heated outdoor shower and beach amenities that were provided (cooler, umbrella, beach towels, crazy creeks).

We loved our weekend in the Mushroom House. The views from the third level are amazing, and the space is beautiful. Check in was easy, good communication with the hosts. And we had an couple amazing meals at the Coast Cafe. Our 11-year-old daughter can’t wait to go back. She loved sleeping in the loft, as well as the hidden room behind the bookcase on first floor.

We loved our stay! This house is an adventure in itself. This is a great place to stay if you love art, creativity, and the unusual. The beds were comfortable, the living area is all open concept and great for playing games when the weather turns rainy.
The view from the deck is magical. You can see all the way to San Francisco, far across the way. The beach access is easy to find. Just a great central location. Highly recommend and would definitely stay here again.

This home exceeded our expectations. We, or the listing, cannot really put into words or photos the uniqueness of the house, or the unbelievable views from the home. We stayed for a total of eight days and each day I appreciated the views immensely. Until our stay we had never seen a mushroom house, so this was something truly special for us to see, stay, and enjoy. The home was clean, and we did not have any issues that needed to be solved. The host of this home was easy and pleasant to work with through the entire process so we believe if we would have had an issue it would have been taken care of promptly. We highly recommend this home if you are looking for a home to stay in anywhere near the area.

Our stay at the Mushroom House was a highlight of our trip. The house is beautiful and unique. We discovered new facets throughout our time there, including the one-of-a-kind kitchen drawers and the bookcase door. David was friendly and responsive. We loved the view from the deck and the easy walk into town. We hope to return to Bolinas soon!

Our family of 6 - parents plus 4 adult children - absolutely loved our stay in the Mushroom house! It is such a peaceful place. The "great room" in the mushroom cap is great for gathering, chatting, bonding. The kitchen, as others have noted, is very well stocked, not just with seasonings/non-perishable food items other guests have left - but with invaluable kitchen utensils (hand mixer, potato masher, peelers, etc). We are a family of cooks and used many of the items. And of course, we enjoyed the view and peaceful surroundings, as well as the local Catholic church where we attended Mass. Thank you David and Brody for a distinctive and fantastic Easter.

Great location. We hiked the Dipsea trail which was spectacular. The trailhead is only 15 minutes from the house.

We had a delightful stay in Bolinas at the mushroom house! Our kids deemed it the best vacation home ever. Not only was the house magical, but it was clean, well stocked, and comfortable. There is so much to do in the area, from beach combing and tide pooling to hiking, we could have spent much more time and hope to return someday.

We were looking for a unique getaway to somewhere we have never been! This definitely fits the description for the mushroom house. The town of Bolinas had excellent fish and chips and excellent views of the Pacific ocean. Our favorite spot was sitting on the balcony overlooking the ocean and listening to the waves, and just letting the day end slowly. David is an excellent host and communicator. We enjoyed a walk to the quirky downtown and seeing all that Bolinas had to offer. We headed out to Muir Woods one day, and could not have enjoyed that more. The house is really cool with all of the neat features. We even saw deer in the yard!

You can't help but smile at this home and property. It's all very natural and that seems to make it feel calming. The carpeted spiral staircase was not a problem at all. My mom is 79 and she loved it too! Only downside was that we took the ocean side of the hwy back home and if we knew how curvy and scary that was going to be we would have driven home the way we came, through the forest! That was gorgeous and felt safer with less scary dropoffs. The walking through the neighborhood was gorgeous as was the beach. Views were great of the waves and surfers from the balcony deck! But the architecture was by far the most facinating.
Oh and the family of 4 deer in the yard,THAT was so special. They were not at all fearful! My mom and I enjoyed blackberries in the yard too :-) It actually felt like home to my mom, which is Germany, minus the ocean.

Our family vacation had a perfect close at the Mushroom House! Communication was excellent, and the space for a family of 5 was perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed Bolinas and quiet days exploring nearby trails. House fully equipped to cook in and enjoy views of the ocean! The unique architecture of the house was incredible to learn about - very comfortable beds, plenty of linens, and loved the record player and puzzles!

My group loved everything about the mushroom house and had a very memorable weekend in her warm embrace. The Hosts have been very thoughtful about many details - we especially liked the icons on all the kitchen cabinets and drawers guiding you to what you need. One of the most satisfying short-term rentals I've booked. We will be back.

We stayed at the Mushroom house to have a small elopement in Bolinas. This house is so beautifully quirky and offers some amazing views of the ocean. There are a TON of stairs to get between floors, but my party didn't mind that at all. Not to mention, the owners were great at communicating and so personable and nice. They accommodated a small plumbing issue with no hassle. We loved it so much and have made forever memories at this property, and hope to be back in the years to come.

The mushroom house was the perfect weekend getaway for our two young families. The kiddos lived the hidden room with the bunk beds and the kitchen had everything we needed to make group meals. Proximity to the beach and cute Bolinas was excellent, we definitely want to return!

We came out to Bolinas for a quick getaway---for some holiday baking and beach walks. The Mushroom House is such an iconic property--and was super fun in a retro-NorCal way. Bolinas is one of my favorite places to come to feel far away from work and regular life. This house is special---and the ocean views, amazing architecture and proximity to beach walks and The Coast Cafe and Eleven, made it totally perfect for us. Beds were super comfy, too---we slept really well. Great getaway!

We loved the imaginative design of the Mushroom House, perched on a mesa overlooking the Pacific. We especially appreciated the well-equipped and well-supplied kitchen. We spent our days exploring the nearby beaches and tide pools. The sunsets over the water were spectacular. It is a great place for a family getaway.
