This is a lovely house. Built with love by the hosts father, it is a lovely space to rest and rejuvenate. The host, Horatio welcomed us with home made Quince jam as he took all our mandatory details. There is a small pool which was clean and clear and beautiful to relax weary muscles and so a few strokes. Horatio ordered the food for dinner which was delivered and we sat and ate outside enjoying the view. He has beer and wine to purchase from him too at a good price.
He also prepared a lovely breakfast for us to set us off for our next day walking.
We loved it. The rooms are up a spiral staircase which is a bit steep and would be difficult for people with mobility issues.

Location, interesting beautiful and gorgeous garden, but mostly the friendly kind enthusiasm of the host who went above and beyond !!!
Steep stairs - I found them ok , but may challenge some.

Very close to the Camino trail and had a lovely cool dipping pool to refresh our feet in. Very kind and helpful host.
Just a heads up, there are spiral stairs to get down to the bathroom from the bedroom.

Horacio greets you with cold water and a snack. He gave us biscuits with jam made from quinces in the garden. Also gave us lots of extra fruit from the garden. Horacio will arrange delivery of food from local restaurants for you. Very attentive host!
Spiral staircase.
Could hear snoring from next room

Horacio is a very gracious host. Water and homemade marmalade on arrival was a treat. His garden is amazing. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

The host was very kind. He went out of his way to make the stay special. He even came to find me on the road when I was late arriving. I appreciated his kindness.
Only that I could hear someone snoring in the next door room! Luckily not too loudly.

Horatio is a friendly, helpful, and thoughtful host. Nothing was too much trouble, and his advice was excellent for our future days on the Camino. I would definitely return to this place.
The spiral staircase took getting used to and the toilet was on the floor below. In spite of the two challenges, this is the best accommodation we've experienced so far in Portugal.

It was so comfortable and felt like home. The host was incredible too!

Horacio was very accommodating and even told us of the best route to continue on our journey along the Camino. Also an excellent restaurant where a meal was 20Euros which included glass of wine which actually turned out to be a demi carafe! The meal was starter: plate of prawns, plate of mussels and a grilled sardine on a pizza bread base! Then the fried cod fish and the Sea Bass served with fried potatoes/ boiled potatoes, green beans and salad. In fact so much we were offered a take home but on bikes this was going to be a bit difficult. The coffee and an icecream with chocolate dessert was also part of the meal! well worth the 20 euros each especially as we ordered a seond caraffe and we weren't charged for it!
The address said Viana do Castela, however the property was another 14kms outside to the north of VdoC at a place called Carreco, which when you are walking or riding a bicycle is a significant addition to an already 50km day. It would be better for travellers who don't know the area for this information to be available at the booking process. Also the house is on the main road with little local facilities close by - though a 12/15 minute walk is not a long way, after a 50km bike ride up some pretty steep cobbled roads, over sand and rocky and cobble stone tracks its quite significant!

The host is so friendly and caring! We arrived after a rainy day on the Camino SOAKED from the rain. The host offered us tea & coffee and homemade marmalade. He helped us doing our washing and dry our shoes. He drove us to a nearby restaurant for dinner. I can tell he cares so much about making sure his guests our comfortable and have a great stay!

I received a warm welcome from Horacio when I arrived. I appreciated the cold mountain spring water, biscuits, and homemade marmelade after a long day on the Camino. The house and garden are beautiful. My room and bed were comfortable. The location was close to the Camino. Best of all was Horacio's kindness and hospitality.

The only problem with staying at Casa do Avo Horacio is that you will never want to leave. I booked my stay based on the glowing reviews of Horacio and I am so glad I did. He could not be more kind, friendly and compassionate. Nothing is too much trouble for him. He makes you feel like family. His house is comfortable and spotless, with a fabulous garden. He greets you with chilled water and home made quince marmalade. he organises dinner from a local restaurant to his kitchen for you, and provides interesting company and conversation. I feel like I have gained a new friend. Highlight of my camino so far, a true Pilgrim’s friend.
Nothing at all. Perfection.

we are on the coastal Camino. This place is easy to find, and a few minutes off the route. You will share a bathroom with one other room, you will climb down a spiral staircase to use the bathroom- you will not find a more gracious or helpful host than Horácio, who owns and runs his place with love and care. Thus was our favorite stay on the Camino to date.

Horacio was a fantastic host. Friendly and really helpful. Easy to relate to. We'd go there again. Food was sorted. Washing sorted ... a great Camino stop. Location is perfect and there is a farmacia next door.
We were fine with the narrow spiral staircase, but some people might find that tricky.

The room and the amnesties were great and staying at Horacio‘s was a nice and calming break from the busy albergues along the Caminho. Horacio ist incredibly nice and the perfect host. I am hoping to come back some day!

Horacio was amazing. he invited me with cookies and homemade marmalade, cooked even soup for dinner which was amazing. He helped me so much with my feet (I was on Camino Portugese ) and had so much problem with that. he really took care of me. I am very thankful Horacio 🙏🏻

Horácio is a wonderful, extremely caring host. He not only welcomed us spontaneously and very late in the evening, but even baked a cake for us. Horácio is attentive and provides everything a pilgrim's heart needs. The rooms have been absolutely clean and spotless. Also, Horácio have a great taste when it comes to interior design.
Thank you very much for having us and the delicious oranges for farewell!

Easy access from Camino route. Was attended to by the owner couple themselves who even offered to cook for us a most scrumptious octopus meal for a small fees. Love the attic rooms too!

This is a fantastic place. Spotlessly clean, comfortable, good shower, great value and a pizza place almost next door. Horacio is a very kind, generous and interesting person and I couldn't have asked for a nice place to arrive to after a very wet day on the Camino. I really enjoyed talking to him and only wish I could have stayed longer.
