Overall good experience and I recommend it.
The staff are very respectful and helpful. The room met the expectation. The internet is good (most of the time). The lack of toilet paper was upsetting. The area around the hotel is very noisy during the day, and not very clean, but it's also right next to Attaba metro station where you can either ride Green Line 3 or Metro Line 2, it's also 10 minutes walk to Ramses train / bus station, downtown, or the Nile/Zamalik which are also accessible by metro.

I always come back to stay at this hotel. The most important thing to me is that it makes me feel safe and reliable. All the staff are so nice, and they have been working there for a long time. Each time I come, they remember me and make me feel like a home. Salah, Sayed, Abdelrhman, Nahed and her 3-year-old cute son. The other breakfast lady, whose name I don't know, has also been working there for a long time. It's good that the manager, Salah, speaks English and helped me a lot. The location is in the center, walking distance to everything. The hotel rate is good, including breakfast.

I love the area (very local). The staff will help you with anything you need, they are always very friendly and cheerful. They took my laundry to the cleaners a few times. It was my third stay there this month (May 2023) for a total of 8 days. I will definitely stay there again when I go back next year.

I'm writing this review on my second visit to the City Hotel and I'll be back again at the end of May 2023 for my 3rd time. Everyone is very friendly. Carlos will help you with whatever he can. When I visit a new place this is exactly what I'm looking for, very authentic (Egyptian) in All ways. The street food in the area is fantastic. It's the only place I've ever been that you can eat for under a dollar. I'll post a few pictures of the food from the place to the left and around the corner beside the coffee shop. The Turkish coffee is also great for 35 cents. Make sure you have Egyptian pounds because US dollars will not work well in this area. You will have to find a bank to exchange them. If you are looking for a place that is English speaking this might not be for you. If you are willing to put in the effort everybody is willing to try and help. Google translate is your friend most of the time. In the time I've stayed here I have walked over 50 kilometers up and down the streets and I haven't seen a single tourist or found anyone that speaks English. I feel very safe on the streets. Look both ways before walking across the street. Everyone walks on the streets and the drivers are crazy. You will always hear honking but you have to listen for what's happening right in your vicinity. All honks mean something, they're not angry hunks like the US and Canada. I if you rate this place under 5 Stars you're not thinking about how much you paid. Once again Carlos is great.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐++.

As a 1 star hotel, it rates 5 stars. The staff is friendly and take pride in their work. The facility is old and deteriorating. None the less, basins, toilets etc. are newer and cleaned well. It was my first night in Cairo and the neighborhood did not look pleasant, but I felt safe. The front sign displays City Hotel, not hostel.

I loved the downtown location and atmosphere surrounding City Hostel which is in walking distance to many restaurants and historic sites. Hostel staff

The staff was the nicest staff I have ever encountered at a hostel! They were always friendly and asked me how my stay was going on a daily basis. They also were able to recommend places to get any type of meal that I needed as well. Wonderful experience indeed.

TLDR; Pros: Decent place with a great price | Cons: NOT a hostel and in a busy area
Room was fine, shower had good water pressure, the staff was kind and very helpful, and I felt perfectly safe with them. For the price, it's a great choice.
One particular good experience - I had lost the outlet adapter for my charger before arriving and asked the staff where to buy a new adapter. They insisted they would buy it themselves. The guy came back in 15 minutes as promised, and had the adapter, I just paid him back the 1 USD it cost.
Issues:
1. The name. This is not "City Hostel," it is "City Hotel." I was confused when I arrived to see a different name, and I asked the staff and they said they use both names. I was pretty frustrated because I wanted a hostel, but this is just a hotel with a shared bathroom. If you are looking for a communal experience with other fellow travelers, you won't find it here.
2. The area. The area is in Azbakeyya. It's certainly an interesting place to visit as a tourist - a massive bustling market with vendors selling everything you can imagine. However, it is very disorienting and overwhelming in your first moments in Cairo. Thankfully the noise doesn't leak too much into the room, but the market itself is absolutely nuts, and it can be frustrating always walking in and out of it just to get to and from the hotel.
These irritated me, but the price is good, the staff does their best, and the room and bathroom are totally fine.

Check in was bad. The staff was asleep and we had to bang on the door for a long time before they opened it. Then they didn't turn on the light.
Finally got in the room and then a mouse ran across the floor to the toilet.
Best thing was hot water for showers.

Great place to stay, far exceeded my expectations, close to all the important places including downtown, easy to access, secure, reliable, and only metres away from all the necessary amenities including the metro, restaurants, shopping etc. The staff (Salah, Hamdi, Gad and all the others) and the owner (Mr Robert) go out of their way here to accomodate guests, and really make you feel at home. It is both incredibly affordable and includes everything you will need to have a comfortable stay. I highly encourage anyone travelling solo or with a small group to consider staying at City Hostel.

Amazing hospitality!! Although some facilities are perfect (if course if you see its price, it’s acceptable) all stuff there is so kind and caring!! I don’t know how other hostel/hotel is like, but you will see brilliant Cairo people there!
1.3
This my second time stayed in this hostel and robert and his staff are very helpful as always and helped me up all the way from train ticket to aswan, Alexandria and laundry service and etc. And as a solo female traveller, I feel safe all the time with their cctv installed in and outside the building and the 24 hours front desk, will definitely come back again for them whenever I'm in cairo.
