The service in general. We travelled with a 9 year old, they even set up a micro in the room to warm his meals
The staff was incredible, the restaurant downstairs was also amazing, we had a lovely celebratory lunch
Location. Its walkable to everything
Our room was pretty but facing the inner courtyard of the hotel, it was dark and really not nice

The location is 10/10. It is one of Edinburgh’s landmark. It has a great pool and allows family swimming at all times.
But the most important thing is the attention to detail. We had booked as a family as in so many other “family friendly” hotels before. But at the Balmoral they had equipped the room with kids dressing gowns, a secure step in the bathroom so the kids can brush their teeth, kids shampoo and lots of little welcome presents. Clearly they won our kids over with the biscuits
With the Number One Restaurant on Site, we were able to enjoy a grown up birthday dinner with kids enjoying room service and a movie.
It was very memorable.
If you push me hard I would perhaps say the wallpaper in bedroom would not be my first pick. But if you need a family treat, the Balmoral is your

The opulence of the hotel. The beautiful Christmas tree and decorations in the foyer.
We booked a taster meal at Number One, the in house restaurant which was absolutely superb! The waiting staff were excellent and very attentive. The sommelier was most knowledgeable when my son asked which wine he would suggest. The wine did not disappoint. We spent 4 relaxing hours at our table which added to the whole experience. We were even paid a visit by the chef. Would highly recommend a visit.
We booked breakfast at Brasserie Prince and would not recommend eating there. There was a choice of fruit juices. However this was not self service, instead a glass of your chosen juice was brought to the table filled with ice! I chose Eggs Benedict and both poached eggs were hard and the hollandaise was far too lemony. My son chose the Scottish breakfast and both his poached eggs were hard too. Not a big fan of loose leaf tea which is served in glass teapots.
At check out when the bill was presented, gratuity had automatically been added. When I queried this I was told this is the norm. I object to the assumption I would be happy to pay this. However, there was no quibble when I requested the amount be removed.

Great location. The room was clean and cozy. The restaurant was good. Drinks at the bar were great.
Pool closed at 10. Also our room was not ready until after 4. Wasn’t even offered a complimentary drink at the bar as we waited. We were only staying one night and had requested an early check in. Didn’t get to enjoy it very much.
