Hill Top Retreat sits high on top a hill overlooking the majestic Atlantic ocean. Just minutes away from the UNESCO World Heritage town of Lunenburg.
Sit outside with a glass of wine under the pergola and watch the famous Bluenose II sail into port, or cozy up around the outdoor fire pit in the evening and roast marshmallows... or do some stargazing. If you feel adventurous you could walk or take one of the bicycles into town. Grab one of our 2 kayaks and go for a paddle.
Lunenburg is host to many festivals and street fairs, including the Nova Scotia Folk Art and Folk Harbour Festival. The property is only 4.3 kms to the town itself and the Lunenburg Golf Course. Lunenburg has many attractions, from the Bluenose II and the Atlantic Museum of Fisheries to several boat tours (deep sea fishing and whale watching) to ghost walks. There is so much to see! Don't forget the fantastic restaurants and coffee shops to dine in or take out.
HillTop is an hours drive away from Halifax. If you are attending a wedding at The Farm at South Cove, Hilltop is a close neighbour. We are roughly a 30 minute drive to Nordic Spa, 20 mins to Oak Island, 15 mins to the picturesque town of Mahone Bay, or minutes to the Ovens Sea Caves. Explore all of the nearby beaches. Walk Masons Beach just a 2 minute ride on your way into Lunenburg and look for seas glass, or spend an afternoon at nearby Hirtles Beach in Kingsburg and hike the popular Gaff Point trail. Rissors, Crescent and Carters beaches are definitely worth a mention.
Spend a couple hours at any of the great wineries or breweries around. Stay local and visit Gaspereau, Lunenburg or Petite Riviere Vineyards or make a day of it and travel to Luckett's, Grand Pre, Lightfoot, or Benjamin Bridge vineyards in the Annapolis Valley. Most of which have excellent restaurants (Luckett's worth a stop and get a photo taken at their famous phone box). Salt Box Brewery is just in the nearby town of Mahone Bay (known for their famous 3 churches..good shopping). After you have sampled a few, make your way over to The Barn for a great cup of coffee.
If it is more relaxation you are looking for, why not book a day at the nearby Nordic Spa in Chester, or book a massage at the Spa@Ninety4 right in Lunenburg.
Hill Top Retreat is a 1750 square foot post and beam farmhouse that was originally built in 1864 just outside of Yarmouth County in the southern part of Nova Scotia. In 2000 it was disassembled and moved to its present location, high on top a hill (thus the name), on 8.5 acres of land. There are 2 other houses that share the hill. This house was reconstructed on a poured concrete slab with in floor radiant heat. It has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 living areas. It boasts all the rustic charm of an older home, but with modern amenities.
This property has deeded access to the ocean ...great for launching kayaks or small boats. This home also makes an excellent winters retreat with a large toboggan hill only a two minute walk away. Make sure to stop at The Boulangerie La Vendeenne bakery just off exit 11 on your way before you check in.
We are committed to making your stay a safe and clean one. From the keyless entry to the availability of PPE for our guests.
*We do recommend guests take their shoes off at the door. Please feel free to bring indoor shoes however.

Very enjoyable exceeding any and all expectations.

The Hilltop Retreat is certainly unique. The building has a lot of character and a lot of hidden treasures to find inside. Bedrooms are very comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked. The games room was a hidden surprise but very much appreciated. Will definately recommend to anyone who is anning to exore Lunenburg and or surrounding areas.

Our stay at the Hilltop Retreat was exactly as we had hoped. It is a beautiful property and home. The hosts have thought of everything - from a well stocked kitchen to plenty of towels, including small painted pebbles to take as souvenirs of the stay! There is also clear signage to assist with finding things in the home. We wanted a quiet place to stay that was close to the charming South Shore towns and this property was exactly that. We even saw deer every day! I would not hesitate to stay again - my only caveat would relate to the amount and layout of furniture if your child is at a crawling to just walking age. Ours had just started to crawl as the stay was ending so it wasn't a concern for us. Thank you Marcel and Chrissy!

We absolutely loved the house and our stay in Lunenberg. The house was exactly as described yet better. Every possible accouterment was considered and provided. The house was incredibly clean, comfortable, and beautiful. The beds and linens were amazing and it is beautifully decorated. We wanted for nothing the entire week. The views are amazing and the property (including the surprise chipping area) was fabulous and offered a very relaxing environment. We will definitely be back should we find ourselves in the area again. Highly recommend this property!
In addition, we really enjoyed exploring Lunenberg and the nearby areas. Lunenberg is under 10 minutes from the house and so easily accessible. We especially enjoyed our dinner at Lincoln Street Food - delicious, creative food in a sophisticated atmosphere. Highly recommend. The house is also close to great golf at Chester Golf Club and a short drive to Halifax! Really perfect location.Definitely consider this place for your vacation!

Everything was really quaint and comfortable.

Anyone who has used online services to book rentals knows the difference between what is described in the listing and what the rental actually is can be both stark and disappointing. So when I said I would like to vacation in one place for two weeks, a beautiful quiet spot where I could read, work on a writing project, and do day trips, my spouse blanched when I said I wanted to reserve the Hilltop House site unseen, area unseen.
It was in our second highly enjoyable week that we fully realized our good fortune. If we had spent four days in the area visiting various listings to figure out what to rent drawing a circle with a twenty mile radius, we would have chosen Hilltop House. Yes, you can rent places right on the water in the Lunenburg area, but there is typically a busy road within a few feet of your front door. Hilltop is just that, a long drive up a steep hill that brings you through a wooded area to a lovely field at the top of a hill with beautiful water views. And while away from it all, Lunenburg with its attractions, restaurants, and supermarket is only an eight minute drive away. We valued the proximity.
Would we want to rent Hilltop again? You bet. Do the owners care deeply about providing a pristine place with everything you need. Without question. Was it worth 24 hours of driving to get there? Absolutely. Could we have stayed there a month? I hated driving away.

Loved the layout of the home and hilltop views. Cozy accommodations, and well stocked for our gourmet cooks. Plenty of outdoor areas to catch a nap or read or take in the views.

The house was perfect for our family trip (2 adults, teen, and tween). The location was an easy drive to several places we wanted to visit, and an overall beautiful setting. The house was very well-appointed with everything we needed including things we didn't know we needed! We absolutely enjoyed our stay and would stay again.
Hosts had great communication for check-in and left a whole host of information about the house and area to make our trip very enjoyable.

really enjoyed seeing the photo album of the move.
The information book was very helpful.

Our family get together was an event made even more special by this great property. It was clean, spacious, very nice indoor and outdoor living areas and exceptionally well equipped. You do need a vehicle as it is a bit remote and up a hill, but very peaceful with stunning views.
Thank you Marcel and Chrissy

This is an old cottage that has been moved and reassembled with modern fixtures. A charming place, very well equipped and furnished. The house comes with the little touches that make a VRBO a pleasure.

This was our second family Christmas at Hilltop, and we were even more thrilled with our stay!
The attention to detail our hosts put into this property makes it a true home away from home.... They think of every possible thing you might need and some you didnt even know you could use.
This is truly a gem, and I highly recommend this location!

A cozy, clean, comfortable, quiet cottage located within minutes of downtown Lunenburg.
Magnificent sunrises complete with deer and birds. The property sits on 8 1/2 acres.
Chrissy and Marcel have thought of everything that you would need during your stay (including an on-site generator). The property also has brochures of the “tourist” things to do along with Chrissy’s favs of local eats and shops.
The house also has indoor and outdoor games including fire pit, kayaks, bicycles, etc if you choose to stay put.
Chrissy and Marcel both possess excellent communication skills in writing and verbally. I spoke with them on the phone before the trip and in writing (via the app) before, during, and after our trip. They responded to my questions within minutes.
The home provided a perfect place to reunite with family and the location provided us one of our most memorable (like top 3) vacations that we have ever experienced.
If you want to chill or be a busy tourist like us then we highly recommend the Hilltop Retreat.

We stayed as a family of 5 adults. It was extremely clean, open concept and comfortable. It was a 5 min drive to Lunenburg and close to beautiful beaches. It had everything we needed and the owners were very accessible if we needed to ask them anything. We would recommend this rental.

I stayed for three weeks for a self-designed writing sabbatical, with some of my family joining me at the outset and a few friends coming during the day at the end for a writers retreat. The owners were very attentive and accommodating. There were a few mishaps during our stay that were not our fault, and the owners attended to them quickly and efficiently. It's a beautiful, well-appointed house with great views and a perfect place to write!

Great house: clean, plenty of provisions, size satisfactory for 6, large windows with nice views and openness, big and well maintained yard and I could go on. So I will. Close to town and deer in the yard!
Thank you!

We had a girls weekend planned in Lunenberg and we couldn’t have been happier with our stay. Absolutely stunning property, beautiful views, cozy, beautifully decorated…couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. Close to The Ovens and town of Lunenberg. We also visited Bridgewater. We relaxed and enjoyed sitting outside at night having drinks and dinner and lots of laughter. Thank you!!

A perfect getaway!

This was our second stay at this property and it didn’t disappoint. It is a very charming house and the owners have thought of everything you didn’t even know you needed! We were also pleasantly surprised to find the addition of a games room since our stay last year. We highly recommend this property to anyone thinking about a stay in this area, it does not disappoint.

I loved the location and breathtaking view, which could be seen from every window, as well as the beautifully manicured outside landscaping.
The inside decor was cozy, with many special touches. The bed were very comfortable, with soft linens.
My only complaints were the water pressure, rough towels, and having to squeegee the shower floor dry after each shower. For seniors, in their sixties, with back and knee issues, it’s a big and very uncomfortable chore.

We had such a great time. Everything we could possibly need. So enjoyed the history of the home. Would recommend for sure.......

What an amazing property! There was such attention to detail and had everything you could imagine to host all of my adult children and grandson for our Christmas gathering. It felt like home from the moment we entered. I can't begin to describe the ambiance.... classic lodge with all the hand hewn beams to the spa like bathrooms... perfect. I cant wait to stay here again in the future.

Very enjoyable, cozy, comfortable and relaxing! Property was just as described, very clean, well stocked kitchen and bath. Even had a visit from 3 deer, probably preparing for Santa’s arrival! A wonderful get away.

Our group had a fantastic time. The home was very cozy and spacious, and the lovely view and yard were great for sitting outside, playing lane games etc.

Hilltop Retreat was a perfect fit for our group of five. It was private, comfortable and a good location, close to Lunenburg. The home was well equipped for a group who like to cook! The ice maker was well used and appreciated. There was a functioning pull out coach in the loft with lots of extra blankets. The bathrooms were nice with lots of how water. Everyone loved the house and would certainly hang out there again!

We enjoyed our stay. The house has everything you could ever need and is well located. We used the fire pit twice and the views of the water are absolutely beautiful. Communication with Marcel and Chrissy was excellent.

A wonderful location with a nice homage to history with reclaimed posts and beams from another location.
A peaceful and spacious property with some wildlife visitors.
Close to the various historic sites.

Perfect stay for our large group, all the amenities you could need. Great communication with the host and simple check in process. Spacious and very accommodating.

This is hands down the best VRBO we have ever stayed! Our first trip to NS…this place allows you to see wildlife (deer and birds) all day long, gives you excellent views of water, Lunenburg Harbour, and every window has a view!! The kitchen is packed with all appliances you could need, cooking utensils, pots, pans…even a top of the line mixer. We cooked dinner and breakfast most days, enjoying lunch out.
Lunenburg, less than 10 minutes away has excellent restaurants. There are multiple sites to visit within an hour’s drive. Great walking at Miller’s Point Peace Park!
I can only say, STAY AT HILLTOP!!

We loved everything about this house. There was nothing we needed that wasn’t provided. It was cozy, comfortable and clean. We enjoyed sitting out by the fire at night looking at the stars, sitting indoors reading or playing cards. There are books and games available.
The location was perfect with a view of the water. We saw deer in the yard every morning and evening. All the places/towns we wanted to explore were no more than an hour away.
We had a few mishaps (of our own doing) and the hosts were responsive and gracious.
Highly recommended!

Both the home and the scenery are breathtaking.
The home lacks for nothing! Every need you might have has been considered and every convenience provided. It is spotless, quiet and very private. A master bedroom on the main floor and another large bedroom on the second floor. The bathrooms are modern and spacious and all equipment/appliances are high end. We had a wonderful stay and would strongly recommend this property to our family & friends. Thank you for hosting us!

We had just a wonderful stay at this beautiful property as our home base for a long planned mother/daughter vacation. Every tiny detail was considered with a beyond fully stocked kitchen and a wide variety of outdoor/water fun equipment. Beds were very comfortable and the deer visiting the property a source of real delight as they nibbled from apple trees scattered near the house. Check in was easy with clear instructions from the owners, who also made themselves available during our stay should it have been necessary. The location was so peaceful and yet Lunenburg was "just around the corner" when we were looking for restaurants and shops. We appreciated being out of town without being remote - really the best of both worlds. We would stay again without hesitation.

Clean, cozy, extremely well-appointed, hill-top property.
It lacks for nothing and provided a relaxing vacation canvass.
Deer typically greeted us as we arrived back from our daily cycling excursions.

We had the best week! The house was so well appointed and it really made it feel like a home away from home. Loved all the windows with the sea breeze and view of the bay.
3.0
Although the house is extremely pretty and well appointed and with all the amenities listed, the problem is that the view is not as advertised. The view is inhibited by two very close suburban style houses that frame a tiny view of the ocean.
