Grabbed a last minute break away. Staff were friendly and hotel was nice with lots of history. Booked breakfast can’t say it was excellent just average hotel buffet. They could do with labels on maybe a tray to sit tea and coffee jugs on as unless you ask staff you don’t know which is which.

Lovely and quirky hotel. Spacious rooms and comfortable beds.

Great to see an old historic building with modern rooms. Very comfortable, massive spa bath and quiet

The breakfast wasn't great, especially the coffee, which was burnt. The hotel isn't heated, so you have to ask for a portable heater, but I think adding an electric heater to each room should work.
Other than that, it was an amazing stay, great comfortable bed, in a striking décor and architecture. The staff were lovely!

On arrival entering the room, it was freezing due to the windows all been left open (it was minus temps out side). Trying to get the heating to work it wouldn't. When going back to reception they then offered us another room, when entering the room I discovered people where already staying in that room, so had to head back to reception to ask for another room. On been allocated a third room as both me and my wife where so tired we excepted, how ever the room had a small bed the carpet was lifting in placed there was mold around bath. The condition of the room was generally tired with paint falling off. In all the hotel was very tired and no worth the money paid for it

Please was beautiful, staff were really friendly and helpful. The rooms are lovely but lighting is a bit of an issue, quite dark in the rooms. The rooms could do with a bit of TLC, they are a bit tired looking. The jacuzzi bath wasn't very clean when we arrived and when we uses the jets, a load of gunk came out from stagnant water, which would suggest it's not used frequently and they don't do regular cleaning/maintenance. Overall though, was a lovely stay.

I stayed for 3 nights to be close to the wales stadium, the location is fantastic you 5 minutes walk from the Cardiff bay which goes to city center in 4 minutes (queen street) and is 2.50gbp, the staff are very friendly and happy to help, also there are is Danish bakery 3 minutes walk from there. As well the mermaid quay which is there the restaurants are. Also did I mention the room has a jacuzzi! I didn’t try that breakfast but smelled amazing.

Building with a lot of character and history.
Very quiet so lacking a bit of atmosphere but service good.

Our 2 night stay in the Coal Exchange was ok . The decor is a little tired and the bed was not the comfiest we’ve slept on . But all in all it was ok. Nice and quiet with a nice ambiance around the hotel

Lovely comfortable stay. Very convenient for restaurants and theatre.

It was lovely and what a special treat having a jacuzz in the room. What more could you want! Oh yeah! Hot drink in the late night bar would've been nice.

Unfortunately there was an event on and the morning after rigging/ Camara crew were so noisy in for breakfast
Restaurant staff were inexperienced and why have spoons left in mugs that are taken from the table filled then brought back with spoons still left in them, food mediocre and lukewarm
On check in put monies on room but at the small bar the bar staff could not work till so I paid with card and then on check out reception tried to make me pay again for the drinks. It was only when I showed him on my phone that the money
had been taken from my account and wanted to speak to a manager that he conceded.
All round I think there is a need for some training/retraining in some areas.
Not one of our best stays.

When we checked in, the bbc were filming in the lobby. We were made to feel very uncomfortable from the start with staff stopping our taxi driving to the hotel entrance to drop us off and reception staff said we couldnt check in early and we had to plead with the rude receptionist to allow us to leave our bags so that we could go into town for a few hours and return later. The other staff later in the day were nicer but she was very unpleasant. The filming was happening regularly so we had to be silent whenever near reception. Our room at a glance looked great. Very spacious. But the lighting was poor, very dark with only 2 dim spotlights in opposite corners for light. The bed was a small double, it was a squash for two average height, average weight people. The worst part was how cold the room was. The thermostat kept defaulting to 17, i had to get up multiple times during the night to adjust it as it was freezing. The bathroom fan was not working and as a result there was a lot of damp on the ceiling. Overall a very disappointing stay as the place has real sentimental value to us as a couple but this stay was not to our expectations. We were made to feel unwelcome for the majority of the stay.

Excellent stay, nice and quiet. Would recommend.

One of the worst options in Cardiff in my opinion. Facilities not working correctly (e.g. no hot water). Filthy rooms and 'king size' beds that were really 2 singles that were coming apart.

Got to room which was a tein, although I'd booked a double. Easy to change eith reception.

A wonderful amd beautiful hotel.
Everything great, nut you should know that the heating is proved by oil heaters plugged into your room, so if you get cold, ask reception for an extra heater

The room was hot, no matter what we did with the air con. There was very little lighting in the room. The corner near the window was pitch black. There should have at least been a lamp there. The room was dirty. No battery case on the tv remote. And the electrics went completely off during the night so our phones didn’t charge and we had to have showers in the dark. Breakfast was cold and no option for eggs other than scrambled. This was a shared birthday night away and we were not comfortable. Glad to get home. Place has gone downhill.

Very nice historical place, need some refurbishment but apparently already planned.

Beautiful property that has retained all its charm

Beautiful building and room. We did have a slight problem with the hot water in our room. This was immediately investigated by the really helpful receptionist, and as it could not be resolved straight away, we were offered an alternate room (which was even lovelier than our first). Great location for all the restaurants in the bay and for the Millennium Centre. If you like older style, historical buildings, this is a great choice. We will visit again.

Myself and my sons thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Room was unique and the jacuzzi bath was an amazing addition. We ate at the restaurant which was stunning. Best food ive eaten in a long time with beautiful surroundings. Very helpful and friendly staff. Cant wait to stay again.

There were 3 fans in the room because they knew the aircon wasn’t working, couldn’t open the window because there was no safety for the children despite it being a family room and it felt like the heating was on full blast - very uncomfortable night’s sleep.

Breakfast was nice. Corridors are a bit maze like and dark. Room was adequate, bed and linen was good. Staff on desk were polite. When we came back from tve city late having been drenched through with the rain, the staff on the night desk were lovely and fetched us some warm towels which were gladly appreciated.

Amazing room for a group of 4 of us! Great value for money and jacuzzi bath was a win! Would definitely recommend for a stay in Cardiff, walking distance to the bay!

A very impressive building, full of history. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Hotel decor is beautiful. Breakfast wasnt great, not much choice, dirty plates, inedible pastries. Staff in the breakfast room were really lovely though, which was only saving grace. Cardiff Bay is so close by, you would get better for your money just up the road in Wetherspoons! Room was beautifully decorated with a jacuzzi bath (we stayed in a king room) HOWEVER, do not book to stay on a warm day if you can help it. This is definitely a winter hotel. There is no air conditioning due to it being such an old building. We didnt think it would be an issue, until we attempted to sleep in probably the warmest room I have ever slept in. The fan placed in the room did little to cool the air. Window opened a crack and the fans built into the room did nothing. We found a used tea bag on the floor so wasnt checked thouroughly after last guest. Lastly, the area around the hotel is a little sketchy. If id have visited on my own or with children i wouldnt have felt safe coming back later in the evening with people hanging around on street drinking.

We had a lovely room, and the bed was so comfy it was fab. Been before, will deffo come back.

Magnificent building if not a little tired… didn’t bother me but some people may view it as a negative
Rooms very large and quirkily finished/decoration… was very warm night, so air con would be nice BUT it’s an old building…
Bed wasn’t the most comfortable if I’m honest but there were some huge beds in one of the two rooms our family occupied.
Bathroom was large and clean, good shower and large jaccuzi bath
Breakfast was nice enough but didn’t reflect some of the really positive views I read which made me decide to choose as an option for the five of us.
Would stay there again if I’m in Cardiff, hence my positive review.

We loved the jacuzzi bath

Arrived and our room was already given to another guest. We ended up in another room which must have been a reserve room as air con didn’t work (it was covered over by paper - see image) no shower curtain and was run down. Gorgeous building but very very tired.
The breakfast was excellent.

For the price it was ok. However we were somewhat taken aback by aspects of the interior design…particularly in the bedroom.

Back side of hotel totally derilict. Parts of it don’t even have a roof . Very very messy on the perimeter of the hotel , it’s been like that for years .

The property is unique as it’s a historical building which is appreciated. The bathroom and large baths are very nice. Unfortunately I feel like the service could be improved, I tried to contact the hotel on Expedia as they initially sent an information message but didn’t get any response to my questions.

It was nice
