The staff were lovely, location was great and the entrance / breakfast area was really cool.

The room was really old and dated, I was expecting similar aesthetics as the foyer so that was quite disappointing when we were shown to our room. The bed was super uncomfortable. After going out for the day the room was really smelly and damp. There was a door in our room which we assumed was a cupboard but when we opened it we entered into someone else’s home! It was quite unsettling. There was a great terrace off our room but it was a shared zone with other guests, so you had no privacy.

We were two couples. This stay topped our 6 week European summer holiday. The staff went beyond to make our experience special, including making us refreshing cocktails by our authentic little swim pool. The accommodation was mind blowing and exactly what we were looking for in our Sassi stay

There was absolutely nothing negative. Breakfast was delicious with fresh produce from the region and were even offered hot cappuccinos!

To truly appreciate the beauty and majesty of Matera, considered by many to be the oldest inhabited city in the world, you have to stay in the oldest part of the city. Maison d'Ax is located in the heart of the Sassi and the rooms, while very comfortable and modernized, transmit a true old-world feel and to stay here is to truly experience Matera. Getting to the property wasn't easy, but well worth the walk. We parked at a local garage called Parcheggio Nicoletti, and for a very reasonable fee, were shuttled into and out of the Sassi area for relatively simple check in and check out. Our room (The Moon Room) was perfect. Comfortable bed with a huge bathroom, complete with sunken shower and view of the old city. It felt like stepping back in time. The staff was gracious and accommodating, making us feel welcome and appreciated. Breakfast was amazing! I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the city!

Matera is an amazing, preserved Italian time piece & Maison d'Ax is right in the heart of it. Carved right out of the rock. The hotel has these two big wood doors that open to a perfect view of the Madonna de Idris (old church carved out of the rocks) and La Gravina caves. Enjoyed a beer watching the sun on the hills after a day of walking the labyrinthine cobbled streets and stairs. Maison d'Ax has a nice little pool. Bring your suit.

This is no knock on Maison d'Ax; However, our cell phone GPS had difficulty with walking directions in Matera. We ended up calling Marianna from the Piazza San Francisco, used the phone as a video (Like Facetime) and she directed us to the place. It really was about the only way we were going to find it.

The people at Maison d'Ax are incredible. All of them. The location is exceptional. Even if the location was not as good, it is soooo good to meet people like Antonella, Rita, Adeline and Bamba, would make me choose Maison d'Ax again.

The room was unreal! Decorated fantastically and set on the hill side into the rock face. Right in the heart of it all. The safe were so helpful and friendly too!

My partner was not too comfy on the mattress, but it was not too bad for me. You cannot please everyone with the same mattress though, but she did wake up with a sore back.

Very lovely place to stay, the room was lovely and staff were amazing. Rita made excellent cappuccinos for us in the morning fpr breakfast, Marianna was lovely and helpful with directions and advice on where to go and eat and Bambo kindly came to find us when we got lost! Such a wonderful and well located place. We can't wait to return!

Location - with only a few minutes (on foot) from Piazza Duomo, this Maison offers the visitor a slice of culture and history. Undisturbed views of the ancient dwellings and the Churches of Saint Peter and Paul and Saint Mary of Idris. Comfort - each room is well thought and is provided with amenities that will make every second of your stay well spent. Service - Elena and her team has carefully thought of the experience and made it seamless for me. From check in, till check out. Most of all she will recommend a great walking itinerary and places to dine-in and grab an apertivo.

It was an absolute bliss! From another world!! The friendly personel, the breakfast, the views- a secret one actually doesn’t want to share. It is like a hidden oasis! Love, love loved it!!
