This is our second time staying at Café Modern, but in a different room. The rooms are quirky and quite basic, so wouldn't be to everyone's taste, but we like it there and we don't mind the more old fashioned facilities. The rooms remind me of student apartments, with painted floors and interesting pictures on the walls. Our room this time was large, with big windows and very quiet. The bathroom was also large. The rooms are in an old apartment on the second floor of a building above a restaurant and it is the staff in the restaurant who check you in. We like the fact that even though there is a fridge, kettle, coffee, teas and cafetiere in the room, there is also a shared kitchen for the 3 rooms, with a microwave/ oven, fridge etc and so you can prepare simple meals. We love the location as it's accessible via free ferry every few minutes from the back of Central Station and then a short walk in a quiet residential area. There are big parks nearby, plus a shopping area with supermarkets, bars and restaurants, including a fantastic Indonesian called Kannibalen En Paradijsvogels. It really makes a change from being in busy central Amsterdam as it is a peaceful nice location.

We didn't really like the 'meat' picture on the wall in the room, as it was a bit disturbing to us as non-meat eaters. A couple of comfortable chairs to sit on in the room would have been good as there is plenty of space and two bedside tables would have been appreciated. The room is a bit sparce.

Loved the quirky, retro decor. Great location. Fridge and tea and coffee making facilities was a good addition. Spacious and clean. Street parking right outside hotel. Close to free ferry to Amsterdam Central Station.

The room is perfectly located. There are nice locals around and downstairs and the atmosfere is very nice. The host was kind and available to meet our requests.

The bed was not confortable and the room needed some small restorations. The soviet style was a bit weird and didn't make us so confortable. During the night a bad smell was coming from the shower.

It was one of the most perfect staying I have ever been. Very nice place in a calm neighbourhood near the city center. Room was so nice. Minimalistic. I felt really like at home place. So calm.

Quiet neighbourhood, nice room, you can get a good night sleep and its really close to he city center by ferries.

Interior has very personal touch, makes you smile. There is everything you need and kitchen is available. Good location, peaceful neighbourhood and easy to get over the river by ferries.

Absolutely lovely staff. This room is above a lovely restaurant (cafe is misleading - go there!!!) and some of the staff live above. I suspect the room we had is similar.

Stairs were a bugger, but we are old and the staff helped with our luggage.

We loved the location. It is in a quiet and pretty part of Amsterdam, so close to the station, but accessible by the easy free ferry. There are some great restaurants nearby, shops and a market. The hotel was small and very nice with a great kitchen you could cook in and make drinks. Our room had real coffee, coffee press, teas, a kettle and 2 bottles of sparkling water. It was very quirky with a bright green floor and lovely bench made from reclaimed wood. There is a wonderful Indonesian cafe nearby called Kannibalen En Paradijsvogels. There is a great bar nearby called Café de Ceuvel.

There wasn't anything we didn't like, it was all great for the price and the location.
