Liked the serene location, the early morning sounds of the birds, had sumptuous dinner under the shed, but just beside the continuous pouring, enjoyed the morning trek to the top of the hill inside the complex and seeing deers up close, two caretakers who were always serving us with a smile were memories that we carried from the stay.
I think the resort ticked on location (away from the marketplace) and just overseeing the jungle, excellent caretakers, proximity of the places of interest (10 to 12 kms away from periyar river boating ticket counter, kalaripattu center etc.).
My kids, too, were happily exploring nature rather than a 6 - or 7-inch cell phone screen. I believe I would revisit the place most probably.
The bathroom was big and maintained okay, but it still looked a bit shabby because of a huge wardrobe. Ideally, the bathroom shouldn't have a wooden wardrobe since it obstructs light and gets stains, which didn't help us to use it at all. Apart from that, I felt the lights needed to be more powerful.
Was lucky to avoid a group of people who came to drink, litter, and make it inconvenient for others to stay in the resort. We left the next day they came, and completely turned the place to an ashtray. I don't know how the caretakers would stop them from visiting or maintaining proper etiquette if they come. Had they come the day we arrived, my perception of the resort would have been the opposite.
Nothing negative, but for new drivers, please be informed that you might be tested with driving skills if a car comes in the opposite direction

the view is great and the staff really helpful!
the room was nice and the dinner although expensive was extremely delicious!
it is really far away and the road is bad - so it takes a lot of time and money to get anywhere

The place is located in tea plantation. We stayed few days there and we loved our stay, surrounding. The owner showed us plantation on the first day and arranged a rikshaw to pick us up from bus station. It's possible to arrange trips and Mr Sanju heped us with that too. We could join a family we met in here. We loved this place.
Towels and bedding could be more clean. No shower in bathroom.

Cassells is a former colonial dwelling high on the mountainside amongst threes and tea plantations. It’s reached via a mile of bumpy track and there are two derelict houses close by.out
Our bedroom was in a two roomed annex - it was clean but basic, food no bedside lights or additional facilities. Pleasant veranda over looking the garden and forest and loads of birdsong particularly morning and twilight. It was a nice place - we just felt that a little bit of investment could have made it great.
We had a hassle paying as his card machine wasn’t working and there was no internet. If we had known this we would have stockpiled enough cash to pay, but with a daily cap on ATM withdrawals and no local ATM, this wasn’t an option. After quite a lot of hassle Shifad borrowed a card machine and lent us a mobile wi fi unit so we had a bit of a connection, but not much!
Organisation was all a bit random. On the morning of our jeep trip into the jungle we were told we must be ready for 5.30 am start only for Arun to turn up at 6.10 and then race to the ticket office to catch it in time.
It’s along way from town so you’ll probably opt to have evening meal on site. Rebbi the cook was brilliant and made beautiful veg curries, Dahl and spices chicken and lamb. Beer available too.
Shifad the manager was very attentive . He took us out to see places and organised three day trips for us with diver Arun and his Jeep. These were good, but Arun doesn’t speak English so it wasn’t always clear what we were seeing or where we were going. The day rate for the jeep was 4000 rupees which is at the higher end we thought. It’s certainly worth pressing for the costs in advance. For example, On our arrival Shifad arranged for Arun to drive us to the top of the hill to see the sunset - no mention that we would then be charged 750 rupees for this. It’s not the price , but the approach we found difficult - he won’t necessarily tell you what somethings going to cost unless you ask specifically.

Pros:
- The manager of the place Sanju is a great guy and so are his staff, Ravi and Umar.
- Ravi is the on site cook/chef and his food is amazing. World class in fact!
- The area the property is located in is beautiful and scenic. It is surrounded by forest and tea, pepper and cardamom plantations.
- The viewpoint above the property is a short drive/walk and is totally worthwhile getting to. Amazing photo opportunities and view await.
Cons
- The rooms look nothing like the pictures.
- The cook and general worker on site are lovely guys. They just don't speak much English.
- The bathroom was disgusting. The toilet smelled like a sewer. The floor was soaking wet when we checked in. At night we saw cockroaches in the bathroom. The toilet didn't flush properly - We had to manually flush with buckets of water.
- There are no aircons in the room.
- The Wifi was patchy and worked intermittently.
- The road leading up to the property is partly corrugated.
- The TV/Satellite did not work.
- Insufficient towels and soap was provided.

We loved spending time in this property. I was very calm and serene. There is no limit on what all activities can be done here and its vast. 500 acres of cardamom and pepper. I still dream of waking up in the wilderness. It's far from the city all the arrangements can be made with the most humble and polite staff. Mr. Shifad and Mr. Sanju are fantastic.
