Room and bed was comfortable and cozy. The ironing table and iron provided was a good addition, that independent people will love when traveling for business, or leisure & need clothes ironed. Fruits were good quality. Complementary sweet for independence day was a nice touch. Food in the included breakfast menu was excellent.

Staff wasn't helpful in navigating the restaurants. Initial check in person should have explained better to new guests in how to navigate the restaurants and how they operate when serving customers. They only pointed out the food areas. But when I came down for lunch, nothing is clear about where to sit, how the steps might be specific to different restaurants of the same hotel, etc. One staff misguided me twice and led to a long delay in getting seating, and before I figured out the problems that solo women travelers can face, as well as problems that happen when staff actually doesn't understand what is true customer service. Many of the staff aren't trained to respect or understand needs of solo women travelers at all, not the kind of solo women travellers who are independent & only possibly looking for luxury or rest related travel. Taj Bengal being a older location, also has major water pollution going on which compromises their food quality, also impacts the sustainability practice & quality of glass bottled water, and the bathroom water quality as well. Many of the water pollution related cooking problems was more evident in the afternoon meals, and the water tasted salty in the room ( as it was summer time batch possibly)- while the one in the restaurants were less salty as it was possibly a newer batch. One problem with Kolkata and West Bengal homes or hotels is that people use RO aqua guard like water filtration devices; which aren't enough to take care of water pollution or cross contamination issues in old facilities. And all chefs, hotels or even homes don't practice the right hygeine ways to procure food, clean food, understand good, clean, health safe cooking practices, or problems that can crop up when facilities are getting old. AC being older, was harder to manage in keeping the room adequately ventilated.

Everything about the hotel, staff, ambience and hospitality. Special mention to front desk Ms Smarika, Pool/Gym/Spa Bishal, Mou and Cal27 resturant Vikash, Priyanka, Felli and Binny and Arpan. All of them took extra care to make our stay comfortable and special.
