Beautiful architecture, design, staff, service, food and experience.

Fantastic historic property with thoughtful decor. Excellent staff, breakfast for any taste, central location and fully equipped gym and spa.
Nothing, everything was great!

Old room, dirty, shower broken

We liked the location: It is still in walking distance of Jalan Malioboro, and you will always find a becak in front of it. The staff were kind and friendly.
This hotel is somewhat worn down and old. You can still see the charme in the courtyard or from the outside - but the rooms are not up to 4-star-standard, and they truly lack deep cleaning. The same goes for the gym: My gym bike was so dirty that I could not even read the display. Yet there were no towels or spray for cleaning, and when I asked the SPA ladies about it, they had no clue what I was talking about. Disgusting! Once you are aware of it, you see the lack of cleanliness everywhere. We were not very happy at this place.
Their restaurant was a disappointment as well. The service is bad, but we could easily see why: There were mostly young trainees working in the restaurant. These young employees were easily overwhelmed, and the few professional staff members could not make up for it, although some of them did a good job. In the morning, it was difficult to order some coffee, because staff members focused on setting the tables only. At one point we walked away without paying the bill, because we simply could not find anyone who would take care of it. We had similar experiences at reception, where a young trainee asked for our wishes every time we were there - but then her english/her knowledge was never enough to help us with any question. Our strong suggestion: Invest in good staff and renovate the rooms.

Beautiful colonial building
Lack of options in the buffet breakfast

Great gym, friendly staff.
I know it's not an English speaking country, but in a hotel of this level it would be very helpful if the staff at the front desk could speak better English. It made it quite difficult to communicate what I needed, because the staff often didn't understand what I was saying. I only say this because it's a more expensive hotel than others in Yogyakarta.

The room is big. The pool is good. The interior of the hotel is very nice.
The breakfast could be better for a 5 stars hotel. Some food are serve cold, and the taste should be more tastier.

Location is good
The staff is not really helpful especially the receptionist Rani, very careless. The twin bed is so close to each other. All my booked three rooms are in the first floor without balcony.

lovely property!! they upgraded us to the suite
I wouldn’t book airport taxi or tours through them as much higher in cost

The historical building is beautiful and very well maintained.
The highlight was definitely Tri and his assistant, from the Vino Bar.
They make the best Martini in town !
Services in general could be better for a MGallery hotel.. no welcome drinks, we needed to coordinate 1 hour+ with the FO team to get a simple slice of cake and a special birthday attention set up in the room, even though we mentioned it since the booking process...

Overall clean and things worked.
The staff ability to speak or understand English was very limited or variable. There was very little vibe in the hotel

Everything was great. But I would not recommend the rib eye. Way overpriced for what you get. Very thin. The rest is very good.

Very nice hotel with a lot of history in the past. In the heart of Yogyakarta. You can walk to Malioboro and the train station.
since this is an old building, maintenance should be very important. The room is lovely but need alot of attention. Saw some cable from the bed light is open.

the hotel is gorgeous! it's classic... the facilities are good, esp the shower has great power.
the room is too dark although it has lots of lamps, esp in the bathroom. I couldnt put my make up in the bathroom. the compliment water is too small. Most hotels now use glass bottle but usually still at leat 500ml.

central location, old hotel wibes
room a bit rusty, very complicated floor plan. Had to endure a loud concert outside during the day.

First the food: It was great at the Hotel Phoenix. We moved to Jakarta two months ago, and have enjoyed the food prepared in homes and in our office cafeteria. But most restaurants labeled "Indonesian" add so much hot peppery spice that it overwhelms other flavors. The food in the Phoenix restaurant was also spicy, but only to the point where it complemented the other flavors. By far the best Indonesian food we've had since we arrived and will go back again.
The hotel was very comfortable. The room was clean and convenient and comfortably air-conditioned. The staff were always helpful and wanted to make sure we were comfortable. The hotel is not new, but it is incredibly well-maintained and boarded historic Indonesian figures.
3.5
The hotel and room was beautiful. Large selection of food for breakfast. Very nice bar and good restaurant.
Not a true 5 star hotel. The customer service and attention to detail lacked to be a real 5 star hotel. It should be cheaper for what you get.

Everything was perfect. i especially enjoyed the breakfasts and sunsets from the balcony.
It’s quite a long walk to room 259, but I didn’t mind

Lovely traditional building and a good central location. Good breakfast. We asked whether a room upgrade was possible and it was
Dinner buffet, range a bit limited.
Some rooms were quite small

The Pheonix Hotel is every bit as pretty as the description says. A former posh estate, the hotel has developed into a more conventional hotel layout although there are many traces of the former beauty of the estate to be found throughout. We were only there for 2 nights so we didn't enjoy all that that hotel had to offer (spa, bar, conference rooms, etc) but we did enjoy the restaurant, pool, and very comfortable room. Breakfast is included with your stay, but we had early morning pick ups on both days and mentioned that to the Front Desk. They were more than happy to provide us with a box breakfast to take with us. We chose the continental box which was loaded with baked goods and juice, as well as your choice of coffee or tea. Our room was at the back of the hotel with a small balcony that overlooked a quiet area behind the hotel. It wasn't terribly picturesque but it did offer quiet and a glimpse of something more of Yogyakarta than the hotel pool. The hotel has many Indonesian crafts decorating the public space such as Javanese marionettes and shadow puppets. There are several comfortable sitting areas for relaxing, waiting for friends, or just places to sit and read or write. The indoor parlor was clearly part of the original estate; the outdoor fountain area is adjacent to the dining room, and on our floor there was a place overlooking the courtyard with table and chairs. Restaurant offers a dinner buffet as well as a full menu. The buffet offered so many choices of Indonesian entrees, fresh salad bar, and fruits and desserts. Very satisfying and plentiful. Overall this was a nice oasis in Yogyakarta with all the amenities you would need.
Everything was great. My only comment here is that the elevator to the upper floors is small. Big enough for 2 people with one suitcase each. If you travel with lots of luggage be sure to ask a porter for assistance. They will be very happy to help.

The facilities were great, the gym was complete with all the necessary equipments. The restaurant was nice and had a nice atmosphere to it. Overall the whole building was very opened and had a great architectural design to it.
The distance from room to room although only across from each other was quite far, thus making it hard to travel from room to room.

Historical ambiance with beautiful surroundings
a bit old
