After the bouncy ride to get to Cano Negro, Hotel De Campo is a relaxing sanctuary. Andrea was a fabulous host and organized the best bird watching guide, Alonso, that we had in Costa Rica. The evening meal (and breakfast) were also outstanding.. Definitely, would stay here again if we are in the area.
Everything was great - especially the spider monkeys devouring the mangos in the garden!

Our stay from check in through checkout was magical. The grounds are a botanical garden with birds everywhere, and spider monkeys greeted us as we arrived. You can sit in the pool and hear and see beauty all around. The owner and all the staff were so friendly. We had an amazing dinner at the restaurant - made with local ingredients. The boat tour they set up for us was a true highlight of our 17 day trip. We said 'wow so many times we lost count. We are so grateful we made the drive to get the real Canyo Negro experience - it was more than worth it.
We liked everything about the hotel - just bring your bug repellent of choice since it can be buggy around the lagoon.
4.5
we enjoyed it, nice lodge next to the laguna, delightful garden with a lot of birds
they arranged a tour on the river with us - we saw plenty of birds, reptiles/learned a lot
breakfast and dinner was
we enjoyed staying in that area, as it was quiet, with not so many tourists
moskitonet at the windows
4.5
Breakfast was good and the timing was flexible. The boat ride on the river was excellent and I wish I had been able to stay another day and take the boat ride in the other direction.
The road getting into Cano Negro was in terrible condition.

The manager was unfriendly and unhelpful

A good, healthy breakfast was provided every morning.

The host was super nice, helpful and a great cook! The rooms are confortable, located in lush greenery. The host organized an early morning boat tour at our request which is well worth it. I recommend it.
The mosquitoes 😉. Yes, there are mosquitoes and you should bring bug spray.

located in a nice garden full of birds and some monkeys. You can also walk to the waterfront and watch some water birds from there. Owner offers boat tours (which was excellent). Food in the restaurant is good. Bed is big.
Prices in restaurant are not clear. There is no menu, owner just mentions some meals you can choose. At check out you get the bill. Prices are a bit higher then other restaurants (but, as mentioned, quality is good). No mosquito nets in the rooms.

Had a good stay, in the middle of the Nature.
Paradise for wildlife photographer, lots of birds & monkeys
The food at the restaurant was good
Good AC
Wifi is a bit slow due to the area location not well deserved by providers, but working good is commune area.

This is an amazing lodge run by Andrea and his wonderful team. Andrea provides wonderful boat tours to this exceptionally beautiful region. Cano Negro is a birder's dream and Andrea will make the experience even better. In his lodge alone you can see more than 100 species including the beautiful toucans and also rare wrens and all kind of colorful Tanagers and of course the famous Cano Negro waterbirds. You can also see the usually very shy Spider Monkeys very close when they visit his garden. Well done and we come again!

great location close to Cano Negro wetlands
no menu in restaurant and only very simple pasta for dinner at relatively high price

The location is exceptional in terms of wildlife on the grounds and on the tour. We had a visit from a troop of monkeys and there were lots of small colourful birds. The staff were very good and helpful, and the 3 hour boat tour was perfect. The shower was also very nice. The pool was the best we've seen! Large, with a winding ramp to get in and built-in seating areas, with places in sun and shade. The bungalows have a nice porch for sitting.
The wifi connection was in the restaurant only and wasn't strong. The room needed more lighting, although it was pretty and the awnings provided good shelter. There were mosquitos (but no problem on the boat tour when you're moving). There's a very small town nearby but not much else to do other than appreciate nature. The dirt road in is bumpy, but well worth it.

The accommodation is truly amazing. Andrea is a great host, super friendly and helpful. You can book trips to the laguna and Rio Frio by boat directly at the accommodation, perfect for bird watching and exploring the riverside. Rooms are tidy and have everything you need. The garden is really beautiful, we spotted Kolibri and various birds as well as toads after sunset.
The coffee and the meals are amazing, Andrea is a great cook, we highly recommend to eat here!

Very professional and genuine property managed since 20 years by a swiss familly settled in Costa Rica.
Nature lover it was a good moment of exchanges.
We came of a safari photo in the laguna and Mauro is an authentic expert for that!!
We fully recommand this adress if one want to discover the laguna within 24 houres
Nothing the boat expedition on the laguna has its price but worth it for sure!

Very close to the wetlands
Excellent tour guide
Food a bit pricey, not many options in the area
Breakfast is included and very good

It is a beautiful location and the gardens are spectacular!
We thought the boat tour was included in the price and we’re surprised when given the $95 bill. Not that it isn’t worth it, it just was a surprise.

The morning boat tour was excellent and the hotel grounds and pool were good places to relax.
Pricing in the restaurant was opaque. There was no written menu or bar list so costs were not known until check out. Also the lighting in the rooms was insufficient.
To get to the hotel you really need your own vehicle. We were travelling by bus/taxi and the hotel were not particularly helpful in this regard so when we left we had to wait outside the hotel for two hours for the bus. The hotel does not provide any transportation paid or otherwise.

It was clean, quiet and beautiful.

Very nice Rancho, good food, friendly staff, nice location by the water, we saw many different birds
Showers, WiFi in room welcome
4.5
The room was a good size and had a nice table and chairs for sitting outside. The garden was full of birds, you didn't have to go very far when birdwatching. We liked the fact that the room was cleaned every day and toiletries replenished, everywhere else we stayed we had to tell them if we wanted our room cleaning! We even got our clothes washed for an extra $15.
Andrea, the owner, and the other staff were very friendly and helpful. We went on the 6 am boat tour which was excellent. We saw lots of birds and had a flask of lovely coffee to keep us going until breakfast on our return. We loved the location which was on a beautiful lagoon and close to the village which we walked around one morning.
We like to sit outside on an evening but the light outside was not bright enough. Although there was hanging space there were only three coathangers and the room could do with a fridge. We didn't like the fact that you didn't get a menu in the restaurant and were told the options so you couldn't see exactly what you were getting or the cost. For that reason we ate in the restaurant which was more or less next door. The food was less than half the cost of the meal we had in the hotel and of a similar quality.

Stuff is very friendly and very helpful
The boat tour with the hotel personal was amazing.
everything was perfect

Beautiful garden with nice pool, daily visits of spider monkeys in the trees. Very interesting boat trip on Rio Frio organised by the owner.
We definitely liked the delicious pasta in the restaurant!

The pool and access to the lagoon was nice. but my the thing we definitely enjoyed the most about the hotel was leaving the hotel a day early.
everyone in my family got 40-50 mosquito bites every night IN THE ROOM while sleeping in the room. they don’t have mosquito nets over the bed, and the owner pretty arrogantly told us that we should have known better and bought some sort of mosquito candle for our room ‘that everyone in the area knows about’. No one who goes to your hotel is from the area, buddy.

It was a great stay at Hotel de Campo and Andrea was a kind host.
He organised some gorgeous boat tours for us in the wetlands of Cano Negro.
The food was always fresh and tasty, every evening 2 or 3 options.
The bungalow was functional and they cleaned every day.
I can highly recomend this hotel and I hope to get back one day.

Amazing host with knowledge of birding in this natural area. Family run with excellent food and hospitality. definitely exceeded expectations for this rather remote area.

Caño Negro is beautiful treasure off the beaten path of Costa Rica and Hotel de Campo is its crown jewel. The food is exceptional and the staff an absolute delight. The property feels like the Garden of Eden.

great place to stay for birding. The guided birding boat trips are amazing

Very nice small hotel with bungalows in garden and pool. Laguna Cano Negro is beatifful and Andrea is superb owner and guide. He knows perhaps all the pills and animals in the lagoon. Thanks for service and I will very pleased for service during next trip in 2022!!!
