About this house rental
The perfect 'beach house' experience awaits you at the Madrona Cottage at Pleasant Cove. The newly remodeled 3 bedroom, 2 bath home on the shores of Hood Canal has been the treasured jewel of our family for 4 generations and we can't wait to share the magic of this idyllic spot with you: A low bank waterfront with expansive tidelands gives you easy access to clams and oysters, and of course Hood Canal's pristine waters. Also famous for the warmest waters in Puget Sound reaching 70 degrees in Pleasant Cove during mid-summer. The waters of Hood Canal are perfect for all water sports. Madrona Cottage boasts a deep wooded lot (one acre) next to the salmon-bearing Stimson creek, separating you from the hustle-and-bustle and gives you a serene connection to nature. Unlike many homes on Hood Canal The Madrona Cottage is separated from the road by a wooded buffer.
Enjoy your morning coffee from the wrap around deck of the cottage or launch one of the kayaks and explore Hood Canal. Send the Kids to the beach for beach-combing, swimming or join them in the woods to explore the stream. In the fall, experience the struggle of the salmon as they migrate from Hood Canal up Stimson Creek to spawn. Take the family on a nature walk up Elfendahl Pass Road (directly across from our driveway) as it follows the stream. The Tahuya ORV park is 6 miles away up Elfendahl Pass Road as well as a popular spot for shooting sports. There are also many hiking opportunities in the Tahuya State Forest just north of the Madrona Cottage. (https://www.hikingproject.com/directory/8019513/tahuya-state-forest)
In the evening enjoy a sunset dinner on the deck with your 180 degree view of the canal and south shore lights. Cozy up around the fire pit, making s’mores or just sipping wine under the stars.
Cottage amenities include: fully stocked, large, gourmet kitchen with brand new appliances, all the cooking utensils needed to prepare a gourmet meal, washer and dryer, Keurig coffee maker, propane barbecue, shaded deck, 2 kayaks, 1 row boat. The lawn is big enough to accommodate your lawn games. The public boat ramp is a few driveways away and we have parking for three cars (or, with one car, even your ORV or trailered boat). Perfect for families and groups up to 7 people. We look forward to hosting you!
Fall special: view the salmon returning to spawn in our creek in the month of November see reduced rates.
**Note: Property is limited to 7 guests. With pre-approval, a limited number of day-guests may visit the property for an additional fee ($25 per guest per day-visit). Day guests may not spend the night.

Our family of 4 stayed for 8 nights and had an amazing time! The cottage was just steps away from the water, great for paddle boarding and kayaking. The south facing beach was in full sun while the large madrone tree provided ample shade. We harvested clams one morning during low tide and had fresh clams that night. The wrap-around deck provided unobstructed views of Hood Canal and had many different seating arrangements (both covered and uncovered). Overall a truly special and well loved location.

We had a wonderful stay at the Madrona Cottage. We were looking for a few days of quiet, rest, and natural beauty away from work, noise, and the pressures of life and found it here. The owners are delightful, respectful, and have thought ahead of everything one can need during their stay and left it available at the cottage. Beautifully redone cottage with an amazing view. We were only an hour away from home but felt like we were on an island where time just stopped and the beauty of God’s creation just renewed our spirits. There was a lovely basket of treats and my teenage kids loved the otter pops too. We look forward to making this a special place to visit again.

I spent many summers on the canal not far from Madrona Cottage. When our property was sold, I vowed I would bring my family and friends back to the canal each summer to swim in the warm canal water we all loved so much. This is the 2nd summer we rented Madrona Cottage and it is by far the BEST rental we've been able to enjoy. Finding such a lovely place, set back from the busy road, not far from Belfair and with such a beautiful beach and yard facing the water is difficult to find. The well stocked kitchen with it's large island made meal preparation so easy. We loved sitting on the large wrap around porch enjoying our morning coffee and watching the watching the critters on the beach. As the tide came in we sat under the beautiful madrona tree, Kayaked or swam in the warm, water. In the evening after eating on the deck and enjoying the sunset or another swim, we all could gather around the large dining room table and laugh and play games as we watched the moon set over the water. Having 2 bathrooms, plus the outdoor shower was especially useful. The beds were comfortable and it was nice to have the options of using fans or air conditioning during the hot day. We had a wonderful 4 days on this this beautiful property and thank Rob and Earline for offering their beautiful property.

We had a small wedding ceremony on this property VIEW VIEW. quiet and serene. The adult children loved the kayaks and we loved the shallow swimming in 70degree water.. A friendly seal visited us at night on a near by water platform..Birds eagles and lots of flowers adorned the visit. We took a long walk one day but stayed close to home as the temperature rose. We cooked and appreciated the AC. This is a beautiful property. We all agreed with another review that better pillows would be a plus ..I would imagine this would be a wonderful Winter retreat as well. Amenities are close by

This is exactly what we needed! Fully stocked kitchen and bathrooms. Kayaks and row boat. Very spacious and clean! Nice touches like books, games, and supplies for oyster harvesting. The owner was very sweet and courteous. Amazing nature walks with the comforts of home.

Loved our stay. Even with cold weather, we enjoyed exploring the beach, playing on the beautiful grassy yard, enjoying s’mores at the fire pit, and lovely sunsets. The house was clean, open, and comfortable. We were welcomed with a basket of goodies coffee, and a bottle of wine. The kitchen had everything we needed and plenty of space to cook and store food. My kids loved how open the house was for playing inside when it was too cold outside.
Tips for future guests: If we came again, we would bring our own pillows. If we planned to fish the shellfish, we would have needed more clarification on the property boundary. It was a bit tricky trying to figure out the property line from the beach. If you plan to use the TV, it’s only set up to use your Amazon account-you could bring your own fire stick or Blu-ray/DVD player.

We had a wonderful time at the Madrona Cottage, it was warm and comfortable for our family and very easy to access. My son, 2, and daughter, 4, had a great time playing near the stream and collecting shells on the beach. We picked oysters during low tide and my husband and brother-in-law shucked and ate them on the beach, which was great fun for the kids to see. We would love to visit again. It's not far at all from the amenities in Belfair and Bremerton and outdoor Kitsap adventures. All the details were perfect. Thanks Earline!

The house was lovely - very clean and had a warmth to it. The outdoor decks were ideal - both covered though we lucked out with sunshine in Feb and didn’t need cover. Being right on the hood canal was amazing - we sat on the deck 80% of the weekend and enjoyed walking out during low tide. The birds were fun to watch, too. We didn’t end up doing the fire pit but hope to go back and will use it another time. 3 bedrooms worked great though there were only 3 of us. I would stay here again and look forward to it!

We enjoyed our stay in this very comfortable waterfront location. The beds were comfy, linen was nice and bathrooms were clean and well stocked with soaps and nice towels. The kitchen and living area were open and it was a delight to watch the beach and water birds from the kitchen window and dining area. Thank-you for the nice stay, Retired Seattle couple

This was our second time staying here. We love the Hood Canal, the space works great for us, and the hosts are wonderful. We got a cloudy/windy/cold day on this trip, but used it as an excuse to go explore Port Orchard.

This spot on Puget Sound is absolutely gorgeous. The water is warm and clear! We did all the activities and really enjoyed ourselves. It was great that it was so shallow in front of this house so our young kiddos were able to safely play in the water without concern.
The house is perfect. It's just as described and very comfortable. The owners live next door and they were very hospitable and kind. They gave us space but it was nice to have them there in case we needed anything.
We would love to come here again and make this is a regular yearly stay. Thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy a little slice of your paradise!

We really enjoyed our stay here! We had our 4yr old and baby with us. The beach is pebbly with lots of shells and there’s a huge grassy lawn to play on as well. The kitchen is stocked, which was really nice. The owners live next door and they were very kind and left us to ourselves unless we needed something. The kayaks were a highlight, and if you’re like me and need that morning latte, there’s a coffee stand only 2 miles down the road right across from Belfair state park

Our family owned property on the canal just a few driveways away from Rob and Earline's property for over 65 years and we always spent our summers there. It was so wonderful to stay at their beautiful house for 4 days, swimming and kayaking in the warm canal water and enjoy sharing time at the beach with our friends and family again. We especially loved sitting under their beautiful Madrona tree, and spending time on their spacious decks to eat, visit and play games.
The house was spacious and clean and it was nice to have 2 bathrooms, though we used the heated outdoor deck shower after swimming most of the time. The well stocked kitchen with it's big island made meal serving preparation so easy.
Rob and Earline were perfect hosts (available when we had questions or needed something) yet we always felt we had privacy to enjoy our stay.
I've rented houses on the canal in recent years, but finding such a lovely property, situated away from the road, with a good beach and afternoon sun made their property so special.

Nice, clean, updated home that is wonderfully situated on a lovely beach. The view from the house and deck is beautiful and the water was calm and swim-able (the beach is carpeted with oysters, if that's your thing). There are a couple of kayaks, a little dinghy, a nice big lawn and a cool creek nearby - so great spot for kids of all ages. We had no issues with our stay and would defintely recommend it.

We were a group of 4 adults and a 4-year old and it was the right amount of space for us to relax together by the water. We found lots of delicious fresh oysters, did s'mores every night in the fire pit and enjoyed wading the shockingly warm water. Only small caveat: small kids might be disappointed that it's more of a rocky beach than sandy for sandcastling/etc. but that momentary dissapointment was overshadowed by everything else.

What a wonderful stay in a spectacular location! We didn't want to leave (seriously; my 5-year-old was crying about having to go home).
We loved everything about Earline and Rob's property. The water and beach views from the entire Great Room are fantastic, whether it's raining (as it did) or sunny (as it also was). We had a couple of clear (but cold) days and were able to enjoy s'mores at the campfire and my husband took our older son out in the rowboat. We took walks on the beach and also played by the creek behind the house.
The house was super clean upon our arrival and the kitchen had everything we needed (not always the case with a VRBO!). Earline and Rob were available when we had questions or needed something, but we very much felt we had privacy to enjoy our stay. We would highly recommend this property and would love to come back again - perhaps when the weather is warmer (it was unseasonably cold).
A few tips/notes for those traveling with small kids:
We have a 5-year-old and a 16-month-old. Knowing my inquisitive toddler, I brought cabinet locks for the lower kitchen cabinets and also plug protectors. The house has baseboard heating which does get quite hot to the touch, but we managed just fine - we left the most exposed heater in the great room turned off. Note that the walls are thin, so sound carries; Earline generously loaned us a box fan, which created adequate white noise for my toddler to nap. I also brought a room-darkening, suction-cup shade for the window of his room; the primary bedroom has room darkening shades, but the other two rooms do not. We brought his pack n play.
As for activities for kids, we found great options! Check out the Bug and Reptile Museum (Bremerton), US Naval Undersea Museum (Keyport), The Salmon Center (Belfair), and the Theler Wetlands Preserve (Belfair) - all were free and had interesting exhibits for our kiddos. The Salmon Center has
a u-pick organic farm as well as goats, chickens, llamas, ducks, alpacas, and bunnies. The staff even invited us to help them release salmon fry into the Theler Wetlands creek; one of my son's favorite parts of our trip! We also visited the Belfair library for a story time/play group (check their website) and spent time in the kids' section of the library, which actually had a ton of toys. In short, we found great options for our kids, both indoor and outdoor, and most of it was free!
I hope we get to return someday; we truly had a wonderful experience.

I stayed here with my husband, my 1 year old son, brother and mother for the week of Thanksgiving. It was the perfect home for us all the rooms were clean and updated. The home was completely stocked with paper towels, trash bags, toilet paper, and laundry detergent. You can easily hook up your Netflix or Amazon prime to watch TV. The best part was the VIEWS it was such a beautiful view all day to enjoy the outdoors. We will truly remember this trip and stay.

Beautiful beach house complete with scenery, smells and sounds. Stayed 3 nights with my husband, one of my brothers, his wife and their 2 adult children. Family wedding a few miles away and this location proved perfect in every way. Views were incredible, kitchen and great room easily accommodated us all very comfortably. Stocked up in Belfair on our way through town and other than a few quick trips to the venue, happily bunkered down at the cottage .
Hosts were present when we arrived and helpful when needed. Instructions were complete and house was incredibly well-stocked.

4.0 / 10.0
Let me start by saying this review has very little to do with the house, its condition, cleanliness nor it’s location. All of those were more than satisfactory.
The reason for the low review has to do more with the lack of privacy, freedom, and utter lack of autonomy when the owners (a retired couple) of the rental lives right next door and they are not shy to about being “hands on” when policing their rental.
They stayed here for 3 nights but really it was only 2 full days. During which time we had at least 4 to 5 “interactions” with either the owners. By “interaction” I meant it was them coming over to our rental to tell us that what we were doing was wrong and we needed to fix it no matter how minor it was.
For example, we had some kids with us (ages 6-9 years old) who took upon themselves to go out to the tidelands in the backyard to gather wood for the fire pit. They are little kids so they just grabbed some little sticks and some driftwood. The owner came over to tell us that the driftwood was “art” and that we shouldn’t burn them. She then walked over the gathered all the driftwood she deemed as “art” and brought it back to her property. How were we supposed to know what someone considers art and what is just wood? We told her that if she thought it was “art” maybe she should take to her side in the first place so there was no confusion.
That’s just one example and although it doesn’t sound like a big deal, it was just another reminder that we are being watched constantly and scrutinized by the owners next door. Frankly it made us very self conscious and ruined what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing vacation.
I’m sorry but when I rent a place like this, it’s nice to feel like it’s your place, even only for a few days. But when the owners are next door and are not shy about coming over to remind you whose house it is, it takes away from the experience. Although it seems they tried to be nice about it, it still greatly diminished the experience.
Rent here at your own risk.

Beautiful property
My family and I spent a long weekend at Earline’s and her husband’s house to celebrate a couple family birthdays. The location was beautiful and the house was spacious. Earline was very responsive to all our questions. It was also nice to meet them both during our stay; they live next door so we crossed paths during our stay.
We would highly recommend their place for a group wanting to take advantage of all the beauty and bounty of the Hood Canal!
Thank you, Earline!
