About this house rental

Escape To The Beautiful Virginia Eastern Shore And The Chesapeake Bay View!
Our home is one of the three “grand old ladies” that were built across from the beach facing directly west into the sunset. Built in 1927 for a wealthy Cape Charles merchant, extensive renovations have been made to restore its grand character and create one of the most comfortable, as well as relaxing family rentals on the Virginia eastern shore. Enjoy a walk on the extensive sandy beach, lounge in the sun, kayak and paddle board, or build a sandcastle! Every evening you can view the fantastic sunset from the relaxing front porch! You may decide to "eat in" under the lights on the back patio or stroll to one of our fine restaurants. Fine shops, galleries, dining and entertainment are all within walking distance. The Town of Cape Charles Fishing Pier is an amenity for your family to enjoy a day of fishing or crabbing. The Town purchases an annual fishing license, so you do not need your own. You will need to register for the Virginia Fisherman Identification Program, which is a no-charge program. Registration is quick and easy.
Each bedroom on the second floor has an on suite full bathroom and ROKU live streaming television. The third floor features two bedrooms, one full bath and a media room. The sixth bedroom is located on the first floor off the kitchen and has a single daybed. A single portable bed is available as well located in the closet of the Sunrise bedroom.
The dining room seats 8 comfortably, but can seat 12 using the corners. The black buffet holds white china and gold ware that may be used. Please do not open or use the china cabinet china.
The butlers pantry seats a table of 4. The wine glasses, cocktail glasses and beer glasses are available for use. The bottom cabinets contains china that is perfect for afternoon tea!
The beautiful sun porch is equipped with a stately pool table for your enjoyment. Four kayaks are available for use during your stay, along with the required life vest and whistle. Sun bathe during the day and cool off under the breeze of the front porch in the evening, or sit fireside in front of the backyard fireplace!
If you feel adventurous you can rent jet skis from Poseidon Watersports, take a kayak expedition with Southeast Expeditions or go horseback riding on the beach with Esperanza Riding Company! The Northampton YMCA offers vacation passes!
Note: Park on gravel lot off private drive behind the house and do not park in yard driveway. Golf cart parking and charging station available there as well.

This property was very comfortable, with many conveniences. Being across from the beach was a bonus. We were able to take the little ones to the beach for just a couple of hours, with little effort to get there. We appreciated all of the things in the house, that we did not have to drag from home. We enjoyed our stay.

If you get an opportunity to stay at this beautiful home because the dates are available, DO IT! sunSet from the upstairs deck is worth it for the incredible pictures alone, but the room to spread out (family of 2 adults, 3 kids under 8, 2 teens and 2 grandparents), the ample beach towels, the media room for the teens with a Roku tucked away upstairs, the opportunity to play pool in the morning and then relax in the comfortably appointed living room at night, enjoy a family meal in the beautiful dining room, do laundry (two dryers, woo hoo!) and be literal steps from the beach are the icing on top. Lovely fenced backyard and watching their Poppy grill out kept our littles entertained outside, with the outdoor shower, beach chairs, beach toys, life vests, kayaks and golf cart charging station adding to the convience and enjoyment for everyone. Close to everything. We LOVED Cape Charles (first visit) and will be back!

A beautiful old regal house. Upper deck has spectacular water and sunset views. Excellent location

Beautiful historic house across the street from the beach. We have rented this house for the last 5 summers and have never had any issues. The owners are very friendly, helpful and responsive.

Lovely house, lively town.

We rented this house for a weekend getaway with four families, including 5 children ranging in age from 7 to 15. The property exceeded our expectations in terms of convenience, spaciousness and location! The house is literally across the street from the beach and the sunset views from the second floor balcony are spectacular. NOTE: This house happens to be across the street from the beach, but it is NOT a beach house in the sense that some renters may be expecting. It may not be a great fit for families with toddlers, young children and/or people with mobility issues who find climbing steep stairs a challenge. The kitchen is for prep and does not have sightlines to the living area. Having said that, our older children LOVED being able to spread out and find quiet places to hang out. The house has an unpaved alley that runs behind it where we parked our cars and our two rented golf carts; this was an unexpected perk because it made it much easier to unload/load luggage, groceries, kids, etc. without watching for street and sidewalk traffic. The back parking area also includes a golf cart charging station which is very helpful if you rent carts (highly recommended). We had very limited interaction with the property manager but that was okay because check-in/ out instructions were very clear and everything was in working order. Bathrooms needed a little more attention and the decor could use a feather duster, but all in all, a great stay!

Our host, Anne, is on top of every detail. The house is beautiful and in the perfect location for easy access to the beach. This was our third year in a row staying at On the Bay and we plan to be back next year, Lord Willing.

Our family enjoyed our stay in this lovely, well equipped, fully furnished home! Proximity to the beach and to town gets no better than this! Ending the day with a magnificent sunset just was the perfect ending to a relaxing, step back in time as we enjoyed our time together as a family!
4.9
We particularly enjoyed the second floor balcony to watch the sunset. Cannot beat that location.

This property is so elegant yet relaxed and roomy. It has everything you need for a friends or family getaway. The hosts are responsive if needed. Love the new shower head in “Sunset”. The sunsets from the upper porch can’t be beat. And the outdoor fireplace is another fun feature!

Our stay at the Chesapeake Bay View was wonderful! The house is even more impressive in person. There are enough beach chairs and beach toys for all so no need to travel with those. The house is beautifully decorated and the owners have thoughtfully and strategically put things out of the reach of toddlers which was a welcome surprise for us. Overall, we could not have asked for a better place to spend time with our family

A beautiful, comfortable house and yard for us to spend some rare quality time with our extended family, and to celebrate a cousin's wedding. Being close to the ocean was also very special. Anne was a lovely host and we would love to come back.

Loved everything about the house and the rental process.

The home was beautiful and accommodated our large group just perfectly. There was lots to look at, the furniture and beds were comfortable, and it was just the right walking distance to downtown and the beach! I would definitely rent again!

This was our second stay and it was wonderful! We had four families which included 5 kids between ages 2-7. Location was great, amenities were great! We will go again.

On the Bay provided our family a wonderful bonding experience. The views from the upper deck were sensational. Anne and Mark are great hosts and very responsive to our needs. We hope to return again next year.

This was our fifth summer visiting Cape Charles and second time staying in this house. And we have rented it again for next year.

I am madly in love with this beautiful house. I wish I could pick it up and take it home with me, of course then it wouldn’t have the view! We especially enjoyed sunsets from the second floor balcony and reading in the daybed swing on the downstairs porch. The beds were super comfy, and I only wish we had more time to enjoy all of the spaces. So many cozy nooks! I hope to return. Thank you for opening up this wonderful home to visitors.

This is a lovely historic home in Cape Charles, and we have rented yearly for the past few years and have always had a wonderful experience. We had a minor issue with the home Internet this year, and the owners were very responsive and helping to address it as best they could. We look forward to coming back next year again!

This is our second time staying here and we have already booked again for next year! This is a great home for multiple families with kids, room for everyone! Location is amazing- walk to the beach and short golf cart ride to shops and restaurants. Definitely recommend!

Thank you to Anne and Mark! I visited with eight other friends and family and we all had a perfect week. The house was beautiful, roomy and we had all the necessities we needed. The home and location couldn't have been better with the beautiful sunsets from the 2nd floor balcony to morning coffees on the front porch, beach access directly across the street and main street just a few blocks walk. We had an evening bonfire, used the kayaks and made use of the plentiful beach chairs and towels. It was very nice not to have to bring those with us. I very much appreciated how quickly Anne replied to all of my emails and addressed my concerns and questions that I had ahead of time. I would highly recommend this home if you are wanting a very enjoyable stay in Cape Charles!

The location was so convenient to downtown and to the beach. We enjoyed daily walks and all of the spaces the home provided for our family to gather. The views and amenities can’t be beat. The beds are comfortable, and the water pressure is great. There is nothing I’d change about our experience there, and we all agreed we’d be happy to stay there again.

We had a fabulous time at the property! It is beautiful with great bay views and luxury updates. The owners are super responsive and the house is well equipped for a large family. We will definitely come again!

Perfect vacation spot
After years of Outer Banks, NC family vacations, we decided to try something new in Cape Charles and it was absolutely perfect. Anne’s home was beautifully furnished with very comfortable beds and plenty of room for our family. The house is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. We loved spending time on the front porch and the fenced in yard was great for the kids to play. The location right across the street from the beach was so convenient and also walking distance to shops and restaurants. Anne is a wonderful host and very responsive. I couldn’t ask for a better VRBO experience, just wish we had booked a longer stay! Highly recommend!

We loved everything about the stay! Plenty of room for extended family. Great views of the water from the bedrooms and balconies. All the extras were provided, from beach chairs to cookery to linens. Town of Cape Charles was great, clean and very welcoming. We can't wait to return.

A lot of history in this old house. The views from the balcony were incredible. A nice fenced in backyard. A great location with the beach right across the street. Large rooms, each bedroom with a bathroom. Door locks need attention. Kitchen was a bit small. That being said, anyone who likes old houses with a history should enjoy this house.

Utterly Perfect - Family Reunion
My sister and I wanted to plan a short getaway as a gift for our parents and our blended family (seniors, adults, teens, 1 kid and 1 baby). We needed the house to be big with spaces for people to hang out and places for people to be alone if needed (and my husband needed an office), and we needed to be in walking distance of the water (toddler/baby) and finding this house was the perfect solution.
The house is gracious. It manages to be elegant and stately but also comfortable and easy. The bedrooms are charming and good sizes. I was curious what the bathrooms would be like because bathroom photos are conspicuously absent from the VRBO listing, and the bathrooms are all more than adequate. It's an older home and there are some quirks for sure, but nothing that caused us any issues. One odd little note is that in the Sunset Suite, where I stayed with my husband, there is no hanging space for dresses. There is a pretty chest of drawers and an armoire, but the armoire doesn't allow you to hang dresses - only shirts and shorts. I brought mostly dresses so I had to figure out a makeshift solution for that.
The decks and porches and grounds are impeccable and utterly delightful. We did use the grill and it worked great. It's not an open plan house, so understand that the kitchen is fairly separated from the dining area and living area, so we had quite the crush of people in the kitchen when we were making family dinners but it was fun. The kitchen is VERY well stocked - everything from ziplock baggies to spices to condiments in the fridge to coffee makers to an instant pot.
My husband got a huge kick out of using one of the kayaks that the house provides. The beach area of Cape Charles is so great for families of all ages because of how shallow and calm the water is.
We had to call an ambulance for the baby on the first night we arrived to the house, and I can also report that the Cape Charles EMTs and first responders are kind and responsive. (It was scary but baby was okay after a short visit to the closest hospital, and we were able to salvage most of our reunion.)
I think every single member of my family looked up the house on zillow at some point during the trip to see how much the house is worth and if we could afford to make an offer to the owners (No, we cannot.).
The house is honestly magical, Cape Charles is this tiny little gem of a place. We had a magical time, and my family is already plotting when we can come back.
