A very friendly pub, full of locals which is a good indicator. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, which is a big bonus when travelling alone. And, for a car driver, a good selection of non alcoholic drinks !!
2.5
Staff in pub were friendly. Nice power shower.
For a deluxe room it was shabby and worn. Garden View meant you overlooked the pub garden and on a warm evening this could be noisy. Food was okay. Parking was difficult.

This was our second stay and again we had a great time. The room was really comfortable & the food is excellent here with a really good breakfast. The pub is situated just off the town centre but is only a 5 minute walk away.from all the shops, pubs & restaurants. There are lots of walks from the town and there is no need to take the car out if you fancy a day off driving. The staff are friendly and welcoming which adds to the experience. We will definitely return.
The only small thing for me is that it would be nice to have bigger bath towels as the ones in the rooms are quite small. Nothing else.
4.5
Lovely stay in a pub that was in walking distance to Matlock Town Centre and walks from Matlock. Room was very comfortable and there was a good choice of breakfast items. Staff were very friendly. A great base for time in the Peak District
4.5
Lovely food and room quiet despite being above a pub. Parking at the rear which we weren’t aware of at first, but the girl behind the bar explained how to get to it.

Breakfast was ok. Bread used for toast was very poor, could offer other fruit juices and should be water. Coffee was served in a pot on first morning but only a cup from machine on 2nd.full English was good
As above

Very good value for money. Room was fine with a superb en suite. Bar and lounge were very welcoming - as were the staff and locals.
Cooked breakfasts were excellent and so were the evening meals ( we ate in two of the three nights). Small car park but we always got a space.
5 minute walk into the centre of Matlock through a lovely park.
Everything was fine.

Great food as always.

Friendly reception, convenient for locations I wanted to visit. Very good breakfast. Loudest thing in the room was the water sprinklers outside.
TV screen a little small for the size of room.
3.5
only had one breakfast ; would have preferred to have some fresh fruit or tinned fruit on offer
apprecoated the fact that the hotel is now set back from main road so didn't suffer from traffic noise. Its locastion for me, given I was visiting family was very good.
Room was Ok but above front door and front seating area. Disturbed by people chatting loudly below. However i was not there at weekend when it might have been worse.
In terms of value for money i have yet to some to terms with cost rises. It still seems a lot to pay for a single room without breakfast when the room and bathroom are not cleaned or the bed made up daily and one has to seek out any additional supplies of tea / coffee etc.

I really liked this hotel. It's in a great spot, an easy walk into central Matlock, the bar is great, the food is good and reasonably priced, and for the most part the staff are very friendly and work really hard. The hotel is clean, shower is good, plenty of clean towels etc.
This hotel would have been rated very good or great but for the beds. The mattresses were so cheap, thin, worn and uncomfortable that a decent nights sleep was just impossible. A homeless shelter would reject these. I have stayed in flea pits, hostels, YMCA's etc. all around the world but I've never slept on such poor mattresses. I woke up with back pain both mornings. I did report it to the staff but the best they could come up with was to fold a spare duvet and put it on top of the mattress as some form of mattress topper. This did not make any tangible difference. It might sound a bit harsh to rate the hotel low because of one fault but if you have a terrible sleep for 2 nights running, it will tend to affect your whole weekend.
Also, the picture in the profile shows a room with a 4 poster bed. This was one of the reasons I chose it. Our room was very small with twin beds. You cannot sit in this room because you only really have the beds to sit on (see above).
On the whole, I would not pay the price we paid for this room, it does not represent value for money. Breakfast included, this is a £50-60 room, nowhere near £100, though we probably paid a surcharge due to the fact it was Easter Weekend.

The hotel was easy to find. I was on foot, so had time to follow directions!
Breakfast was good. Plenty of it!
Can't think of anything that I would have improved on for a short stay.

The Red Lion for us had everything, friendly staff, comfortable room, delicious food, it is a great locals pub and is close to the town centre. We had a great winter weekend escape and will definitely stay here again.

excellent Breakfast and dinner.
Could feel the bed springs, wasn’t a comfy bed.

Being in a pub/restaurant was convenient
The shower was a bit dated and sprayed me in cold water as the shower head had a loose fitting
