Onsens were very very small.
Check-out time was at 10 am. They called our room twice before that time to rush us for our checkout. We didn't pre-request any meals, so there was NO food available to us at all when we arrived. Not even simple snacks. Location is quite a far walk from Hakone-yumoto. Recommend a very small suitcase or taxi. Onsens are very very small. Very strict rules that you must abide by, not very foreigner friendly.

I stayed at the Deluxe Twin Room with my significant other for a one-night stay and we LOVED it! We were a bit skeptical at first because of the average reviews, but we were so surprised. This place deserves 5/5 stars~! We were immediately met with such lovely hospitality from the staff, and although not all of them spoke English, they tried their best and it was definitely manageable for English-speaking travelers. Both the dinner and breakfast Japanese-styled meals were wonderfully crafted and delicious. Our room, private bathroom, and private outdoor bath were very clean. I can't say more about the outdoor bath, it was so relaxing, and it felt like all of the stress of traveling seeped out of my body. Staying at this ryokan was one of my top experiences while visiting Japan, and I can't wait to be back!
As many reviews have said, the WiFi isn't great, however, if you have a WiFi block, then you'll be fine! It was also a wonderful way to disconnect from society for a day.

Friendly staff with tasty food!
The location is a bit far from the train station and the service of the shuttle bus is limited.

Family owned business and it was our first time staying at a Ryokan. Although it may appear small outside, everything inside from staff to onsen, food and room was exceptional. This place exceeded our expectations and I would highly recommend this place to anyone after the full Japan experience with yukaka's included!
P.S - The lady and staff that served us spoke little english but google translate helped and the overall experience was fun! Sleeping to the river stream running outside our room was soooo relaxing.

Food was above expectations (Japanese set).
1. Old room with dirty wallpapers.
2. Broken furniture and windows.
3. View on the parking space.
4. Weird attitude: when I asked to change the room because of the noise from the parking , manager just answered "it's ok after 6pm".
5. Very small public baths, luckily we were the only visitors.

I had a good stay overall. The food was amazing and I think the chef is wonderful. The rooms were traditional and relaxing. The spas were also cozy and nice. I liked the location as it was quieter than downtown hakone-yumoto. The service by the Nepalise staff member was incredible! It's near a river and a wide variety of hiking trails and onsens.
There were a few problems preventing my stay from being a great stay. First, there was no wifi in the rooms. This would be okay if the lobby was warmer, but the lobby was freezing cold even with the heating on. I used the wifi in the lobby for 90 minutes one night, but my feet and hands were numb. They either need to get wifi in the rooms or have better heating in the lobby. Next, the check out time was 10 AM. I was about 10-15 minutes late because I couldn't find something and needed to use the bathroom. They knocked on my room repeatedly and called my room, then threatened me with a higher charge. This gave me a bad taste. I felt the boss is too traditional and doesn't understand how important it is to give some flexibility to customers. A little kindness and humility goes a long way into helping people want to come back again and again. Pressuring and threatening when people are a bit late is not a good way to do business. Especially for international customers. Finally, breakfast was served at 8:30 AM but the onsen closed at 9:00 AM. There's no shower in the rooms, so I had to rush to use the onsen after eating. I have stayed at many ryokans and usually, they are not so strict. I feel the management needs to make some changes and offer better customer service, then this ryokan can be a fabulous place, but with the current rigid thinking, I won't stay there again. It has amazing potential with a few changes!
