A very quirky beautiful historic hotel.
Squeaky floors at night.

It's a lovely place and the kindness of the staff was exceptional.

Location was brilliant and the building was wonderful. The staff I cannot fault. They were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble.
Bathroom tap was loose which was very annoying.
4.5
Breakfast was lovely and the view from our window Room 19 was delightful

Great hotel and location
We didn't get to experience any ghosts!

Historical interest and position
The facilities were not as described by booking.com. The staff said they keep telling booking.com to alter various descriptions but that booking.comb never does. The receptionist told us to book direct in future.

Friendly helpful staff, lovely old building, very convenient for all the pubs, restaurants and shops in Rye. Breakfast (included) very good. Evening meals of a high standard with a reasonable selection.
After some heavy rain there was water in the bathroom from the flat roof above. After having no (or any) rain for so long it may not have been noticed or reported - I’m sure they’ll have it fixed.

I loved the rustic authenticity of old word English town.
You can hear everything in the rooms next to you and we would have liked a shower.

It was absolutely beautiful. So old and historic but also so comfortable
Nothing, it was perfect

Location, ambience, on site parking and full of character!
Nothing.

Cost and quaint
Breakfast did not cater for vegans - plant based milk would be a bonus
4.5
the whole ambience and the excellent history of the hotel
we ordered a cheese and chutney Baguette Saturday lunchtime at £9.50 and received a baguette with a slice of cheese and literally a smear of sauce plus 3 pieces of lettuce the size of a 10p coin.
We complained and they re-funded the cost. Not impressed with their response.

Great heritage property, excellent location, pretty unique experience. Decent food.

I have wanted to stay at the Mermaid for a long time! Both myself and Sister stayed for 1 night. It’s a beautiful Hotel with lots of history.
Staff are all very helpful and welcoming. I cannot remember the last time I’ve stayed somewhere where staff will show you up to your room and carry your luggage. This is a lovely gesture.
Our twin room was a good size and the beds are comfortable.
Dinner in the evening restaurant was lovely as well as breakfast.
4.5
It kept its authentic ambiance. A well stocked bar and a great breakfast.

The cookies 🤷♂️
Small compact and secluded

We went for the experience & to say we had stayed in such an historic place. The staff were exceptionally good.
Enjoyed the food.
At our ages of 88 & 92 the stairs could have been a problem but for one night it was fine.
With a building as old as it is, we couldn’t have expected anything more.
4.5
location and great bar
breakfast was
very poor - run out of fruit and omelettes were like rubber over cooked - very disappointing
4.5
atmosphere, location, bar, restaurant, all super!
everything was good

The toilet did not flush correctly. I believe this is a known problem with the room we occupied.
I was advised that the issue was a very old hotel and to expect water pressure issues.
A toilet does not have water pressure problems - it is gravity fed.
We were expected to repeatedly flush the toilet and wait between flushes for the cistern to refill.
We did not pay for the inconvenience of standing around in a toilet re flushing for minutes on end.
The cistern is faulty and should have been replaced

Outstanding building and location.

Beautiful quirky hotel with such unique features and interiors. Staff are young and inexperienced but very friendly and eager to help you
Our bathroom facilities were designed in a way that meant we had to shower in a crouched position in a bath and could not stand up.
Breakfast was not good, but other meals we had at the hotel were great

We stayed at the Mermaid to celebrate a birthday, and we fell in love with the place! We stayed in the Glover room (double room) and it was very clean and well maintained, I love the charm of this hotel with its wooden beams, low, sloped ceilings and creaky floors, it really adds to the feel of the property given its age. The room also looked out onto the cobbled street, and it really felt like we had stepped back in time. The Mermaid is so rich with history and tales of the past, which is extremely fascinating and staff members are happy to tell you about the history and their own stories (ghostly ones!) The staff are an asset to the Mermaid and the food is also delicious!! I couldn't fault it, nor recommend this hotel enough, we will definitely be returning!! Thank you for such a lovely stay.
The only criticism is that we weren't staying longer!!!!
