Great hotel with history. Excellent dinners and breakfasts in Japanese style. The Japanese-style room was very large, beautiful and comfortable.

The spa was wonderful and clean. The outdoor one is especially beautiful, allowing you to enjoy the lush green hill side. The food was nice and fun to eat. They made kids meal tailored to young children, which was a pleasant surprise. The hotel is on a hill, quite a walk from the train station. It took us a lot of effort to drag our big luggage to the hotel. However, for those reading this post, you are in luck. They offer shuttle bus pickup from the train station if you arrive in the afternoon, and they also offer shuttle bus drop off in the morning after checkout! Simply go to the information center right outside of the Hakone-Yumoto Station, and the staff there can call them to send a shuttle down to the station.
I had a bad experience during checkout. It may be my naive assumption to blame. I've ordered a standard Japanese style bed room for 2 adults. The listing in Booking.com doesn't have an option to include a child. I messaged them about our son and said I will pay for extra fee for him at the hotel. Before the trip, my wife got sick, so I told them that we will only be 1 adult and 1 child for the room. They replied that they could not give refunds, which was fine, but I expected the price for my wife would now covered my son. During check-in, they didn't ask about the missing person or mentioned any estimated fee for my son. I still had the assumption that I paid for 2, so it should cover 2 and didn't ask during check-in. During check-out, I was surprised that I had to pay a $12000 fee for my son. I said I'd already paid for 2 adults, and the extra adult price should be enough to cover a child. They insisted they could not change the bill, the child had its own price, and I forfeited the extra adult. This non-negotiable and non-flexible experience during checkout left a disappointing ending to my trip.

Nothing! It was a wonderful experience.

We were looking for a ryokan that offered private onsen in our rooms, and found the perfect one. Facilities, staff, and Kaiseki meals for dinner and breakfast were wonderful. They have a rooftop deck with a nice relaxing view, and private onsen are available for rent for a larger group. Overall, a great experience!
Location is a bit far from the restaurants and shops of Hakone Yumoto, so one either needs to talk a long walk up/down steep streets, or have a car, or take a shuttle ride. This is obviously not the fault of the ryokan, who try to make things more convenient by offering a free shuttle bus. But something to be aware of when making a booking.

The property had a bit of old school charm. The service was impeccable. The staff were so friendly and accomodating from start to finish, in every interaction.
Our room had the most amazing view of the hills and greenery and our own onsen which was truly a lovely experience.
The property is located up a few steep hills, although only a 10min walk. The provide a shuttle bus in the morning, every 30mins to take you down which is super efficient for daily activities or when checking out.
Dinner and Breakfast were included. Traditional Japanese style. The food is as fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. The price for a hotel in that area, at that time with those facilities was fairly reasonable.

private onsen in the room was very nice. rooftop onsen also nice and could be booked for 3000 yen for 45 minutes. booked for sunset but mountain blocked the view.
Food was quite bland.
upgraded to more expensive room but seem to have missed out on tatami floor and enoki bath.
rooftop bar only open between 3-5:30.

Dinner and breakfast were excellent! Private rooftop bath that we purchased separately was also very nice.
Public bath closing at 9:30am.

Very relaxing ryokan nestled in the onsen Center of Hakone. Service from all staff was exemplary of Japanese hospitality. Included breakfast meals were generous. The private baths are indeed worthwhile but the public are also equally impressive.
It is up on a hill, so the first trip up can be tough if walking! It can also be hard to navigate at night from other side streets due to the layout of the town.

nice set up
useless staff, unhelpful.

Onsen was decent. It wasn't really crowded.
Their food was rather cheap for e.g. fish cakes and the rice was mediocre as compared to the standard japanese rice.
They required us to share some of the dishes amongst ourselves.
The room only had a heater and the pillow was too thin.

Staff are very friendly, helpful and proactive (though cannot really understand English)
Food (within hotel package) is sumptuous but may not suit taste of kids or teens. Also too much food being served e.g. a meal may have 3 different soups. Took Ryokan room, wish there are more table or areas to place things. Pillows too small, will be good if they can include additional pillows for guests in the room.

A little bit expensive

The terrace was the best part of the room, with a beautiful view and nice bath tub that was always warm. The room was also very large. Staff was kind, and meals were very elaborate.
The entire property is a bit dated. There were visible signs of wear throughout, such as rust stains on the wall in the bathroom, peeling paint in the outdoor bath of the public bath.
