About this bed and breakfast

The perfect couples retreat! Location, Location, Location! Park your car and grab your walking shoes to explore one of the true hidden gems and last bastions of the Old South. You will be staying on the prettiest historic waterfront street in Edenton , surrounded by charming shops, restaurants, art galleries and historical sites. Step out your front door and toss a fishing pole in the Bay, take a stroll over the charming wooden bridge towards Hayes Plantation, launch your own kayak or rent one from the town just down the street then after enjoy a picnic on the lush historic Green in front of our magnificent courthouse.
It's all just steps from your door. Perhaps you just want to relax or explore the rich history that Edenton is famous for. Whatever you choose to do, Burch House is the ideal historic waterfront location.

You are very welcome to also enjoy the view from the front porch of the main house as sailboats glide across the Albemarle Sound and perhaps take a stroll in the park just across the street. In a place where porch sitting is an art, indeed often in the evenings as the Sun gently sets over the water you can see how special this incredible and rare place is. Being protected and shielded from the modern world in many ways, the essence of small town living and being one of the true historical destinations where the very ideals of America were born before the Revolution and set into motion by Penelope Barker herself, still hangs in the sweet Southern air along with the Magnolia blossoms and Jasmine. My friends, you absolutely will feel what it really must have felt like hundreds of years ago when this house was built while sitting in our rocking chairs looking out upon the day and into the fire fly lit up evenings and can easily imagine a time that is truly now, Gone with the Wind. ( yes we borrowed that from Margret Mitchell)

In addition to the main house front porch views, also prepare to be dazzled by the blooms planted on the property as you sit on your private courtyard patio. Relax to the cascading drops from the water fountain just outside your door. In the morning you may want to sip coffee to the sounds of the many birds that call our lovely yard home.

Evening brings gas lanterns to light your way through the courtyard leading to your completely remodeled and comfortable home away from home. Inside you will snuggle by the fireplace and enjoy the water view from your king bed suite peering down the driveway. The kitchenette provides a small fridge, sink, dishes and coffee bar. There is no stove for cooking full meals, however we do provide a microwave for warming up the leftovers from some of our terrific restaurants in town or a nice bowl of soup. Laundry facilities are located at The Wash House Laundromat here in town for longer stays.

The Carriage House gets its name from when the Carriage and horses of the homeowners would be housed before cars. So we want you to know that the bathroom is quaint and has all modern amenities. However, the plumbing is quite old like everything else in the historic district, though luckily not what was here in 1775. We ask you be patient with the toilet flushing which is a bit slower than more modern homes and flush it twice if needed. Indeed we are not as quick as the Holiday Inn but nothing is that was built over two centuries ago is. I am sure you will have not issues with it. Just a heads up.

Interior designer, David Stevenson has created an incredibly homey yet stylish environment by brilliantly combining new and antique furnishings and decor, all with a nod to our coastal location.

You will find the downstairs living room to be a happy and fun place to unwind with a cheerful aqua sofa, antique secretary, crystal chandelier and overstuffed swivel rockers. Not to mention the custom made fireplace, window treatments, and the garden view, soft hues exude tranquility and restfulness in the upstairs king bed suite.
Lush monogrammed robes, fine linens and even candles are provided for your comfort and relaxation. Extras such as flowers, chilled Champagne and favorite treats can be provided upon request. We also have a spa day here in town, coupled with easy drive day trips to the beaches of the Outer Banks, great golf, the historic narrated trolley tours, small boat tours to be enjoyed nearby the house. If your visit also has a special purpose as well, we love to host small occasion garden parties, vow renewals, weddings and surprise engagements can be arranged by our accredited event and wedding planner. For those who love to get out on the water, kayaks for rent and boat tours can be enjoyed so to best explore the area by water just a couple of blocks down Water St. by the lighthouse.
Burch House By The Bay is not just a vacation rental, it's an experience and one we trust will be a wonderful memory for years to come. Come join us and I guarantee you will leave with new friends made and Edenton earning a very special place in your heart as it has in all of ours.

We biked around the historic district and sat on the front porch of the main house with our host Judy and her friends one evening. Great location across from Queen Anne Park and an easy bike ride to downtown. Clean, comfortable space for quiet getaway.

I really don’t know how our recent stay at the Burch Carriage House in Edenton could have been any better. Hunter and Judy have done all the things needed to create a space for a truly memorable stay. Layer on top of that the fact that the town of Edenton itself is an enchanted community that has embraced their significant history in a very real and accessible way. Lots to digest for any American history buffs out there. Hunter and Judy’s hospitality during our week long stay was a perfect example of southern charm and we appreciated all of the little things that they did to make our stay more enjoyable. Simply a 10 out of 10 experience.

This place was wonderful. It was very clean. It had an amazing location and my husband and I walked everywhere-cute shops, coffee house, bakery, and restaurants. Excellent communication and southern hospitality! A true little gem and the perfect place for a little romantic getaway!

This property was perfect. The carriage house was immaculate and had everything that we needed for our weekend stay. Hunter was extremely responsive, and even pulled out the bikes and kayaks for us to use in between downpours. Having access to the expansive front porch overlooking the water at the main house was fantastic for watching the storms roll in. I don't think I've stayed somewhere that has a checkout policy of "just pack up and go, we're here to accommodate you!" Awesome. Just a short walk/bike ride to town and historical sites. Kayak/canoe launch and fishing directly across the street. We will be back!
