This place is cozy and comfortable. The drive way is a bit intimidating but nothing 4 wheel drive can’t handle. The amenities provided are in good working order and easy to find. It is very close to the park and has great recommendations for where to eat and things to do. It might be a small town but it has big fun. This place might not have Internet but makes up for with a library or books and films. I’m looking forward to going back and giving the river rafting a shot.

Great Property in a Great Location!! Located right across the street Cantrell’s Rafting / Bar, it’s the perfect place to stay for a rafting trip and only a couple minute drive from downtown.
The property is completely secluded by the surrounding hills and trees. Plenty of space to enjoy outdoor activities with a fire pit and large patio area.
Went with 5 guys and had plenty of space to relax and sleep.
People were not joking about the AWD you'll need to get up the hill. We had to keep two vehicles parked down at Cantrell’s that couldn’t make the climb.
The place was clean, and had all the supplies and amenities for a comfortable stay.
Perfect spot for a West Virginia Trip!

We rented this house specifically for the two full bathrooms to accommodate the two couples’ differing morning routines. The first morning the upstairs shower would not turn off—at all—it remained fully on. We notified John Taylor immediately. He thanked us for letting him know, indicating that not everyone would do that. A handyman was sent out. He turned the main water valve off, but couldn’t fix the problem. A plumber was there at 7 pm after we returned from our day—inconvenient. He was only able to turn the shower off, but not fix it then, indicating it was installed incorrectly and therefore would be a time-consuming fix. We were patient and kind throughout this ordeal. All four people had to use the first floor shower the next morning, waking one guest far earlier than planned. The upstairs couple had to pack up all their shower needs to use downstairs. The downstairs couple had to use the upstairs toilet and sink while the upstairs couple were using the downstairs shower. See the aggravation?
After returning home, we asked John for a 20% discount since we didn’t have use of the two full bathrooms we had paid for. He refused, but offered us the same discount on a future visit. Why would we return when you didn’t do right by us the first time? That’s just poor business sense! We understand that it wasn’t John’s fault and that he TRIED to fix it, but when a business owner is unable to deliver his product as advertised, an adjustment in price should be offered.

Nice and clean cabin in a good spot for climbing or rafting. Close to town. Don’t underestimate the steepness of the driveway - you will need AWD.

We had a very nice stay and the house is close to many fun adventures. The home was clean, had plenty of room for us, and had many of the things we needed. The outside area needed a little more attention, had to do a little clean up from the last visitors. The owner is super easy to work with and gave us lots of wonderful ideas of places to hike and eat! We will be back in a few years.

Location to the white water rafting was great. Cantrells white water was amazing. Our guide, Terry was also amazing. Interior of cabin was great. Exterior was overgrown, gutters were full of growing trees and when it rained it looked like a waterfall around the house. Plenty of large logs to burn in the outdoor fire pit, but no ax or log splitter to split the logs into burnable size. Empty beer bottles and cans left from previous renters and cigarette butts all over the outside property. Overall, I would rent this cabin again simply due to the location to rafting but would like to see a better maintenance team used for property and maintain the amazing landscape.

Great experience, everything was as expected. You’ll definitely need a four wheel drive vehicle to get up the driveway.

Top of the Hill cabin - On top of the world stay
My wife and I took our son and D-i-L for our first trip to WV. This cabin has probably set an unattainable expectation for future stays. This place was the bomb. I think we snagged it due to a last minute cancelation. We will def try to stay there again, but I am sure it is always booked. Host was fantastic, helpful, and quick to respond. Co-host, Nancy, was an absolute pleasure to work with, if we needed anything.

You must have a 4 wheel drive for this rental but once you get to the top of the hill a nice clean fully outfitted cabin awaits you

LOVE this property!
I have come to this area for rafting for the past 10 years and this is the best place I have stayed. We met our friends from TN and had a blast all weekend. We couldn’t have spoke more highly of this place! We will definitely be back!

Amazing cabin/location
We have been to Fayetteville many times. This is by far the best place we have stayed at in the area. Cabin has everything you need and then some. Fantastic fire pit area, patio for corn hole and grilling.
Location: you definitely need 4WD/AWD to get up the driveway!
It’s located directly across from Cantrell rafting. Fantastic rafting company and they have a pub that’s open Thursday-Sunday.
This cabin is now our go to place to stay in Fayetteville. 5 star all the way!

Charming cabin!!
Would absolutely recommend this property! While the driveway is a tiny bit intimidating it was no problem at all and just helped to make the house feel like it was away from it all. The house is great - not huge but felt spacious and housed five adults with no problem. I’d recommend bringing your own air mattresses (sofa bed mattress was past it’s prime but, folded up, the sofa was fine). The two beds in the bedrooms were great. We enjoyed the loft area for afternoon dozing and reading and that porch is fabulous - peaceful with beautiful views of the wildflowers in the yard. We would stay again in a heartbeat!

Great location, well furnished!
Top of the Hill Cabin is a wonderful place to stay when exploring New River Gorge. It is conveniently located but also secluded. The description does not lie when it says you need four wheel drive to get up the hill. The hill is walkable but it would be difficult if carrying luggage. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed, including extra towels, blankets, air mattresses, s’more sticks, and cooking utensils. Would highly recommend! Also if you’re looking for adventure check out Cantrell Rafting. We had a great time on the Lower New River Express!

Spend your hard earned money someplace else.

Great home in a great location
My husband and 10-month old had a lovely stay while visiting family and hiking in the park. The location can't be beat - just a few minutes away from all the popular trails and downtown Fayetteville. We had no issue with cell service through Verizon, and were able to get supplies nearby. You absolutely need a four-wheel drive vehicle to get up the driveway (as suggested). We look forward to staying again soon!

Easy Peasy
Wanted to go back and visit my hometown and attend a music festival. Arrangements were super easy. House was fabulous and super easy. Getting around was super easy. People were great, helpful and layed back. Need a 4WD to get up the hill but that wasn’t a problem. Beautiful views beautiful weather. Great time!

Great weekend get away!
Have no complaints about our whole experience or the cabin at all other than a hot tub would make a nice feature! Other than that it was well beyond our expectations and we were very happy with our stay

Great property if you’re visiting New River Gorge!
Excellent location within minutes of many trails! Enjoyed evenings on the patio. Well-stocked kitchen. If you’re not in the mood to cook, there are several excellent restaurants nearby. The wooded property is beautiful, and we spotted three deer while there.

Enjoyable Stay
Top of the Hill is on the edge of town but you feel like you are deep in the woods. Great location for access to the New River Gorge area. The cabin is well appointed and was perfect for two couples. John is very responsive to questions and check-in was flawless.

Top of the Mountain - Amazing Property
Our family had a great time visiting the area. Lots of hiking for all skill levels. The property was clean and John answered our questions in a timely manner. Everything you need for a relaxing stay can be found at Top of the Hill. My son made an observation about the need of 4WD. Not only do you need 4WD/AWD but an SUV would be recommended. Great time and we’ll be back!!!

Simply wonderful
We can say enough about our stay at THE TOP OF THE HILL. there is a considerable amount of thought that went into making this place your home away from home. Everything was well thought out and the place was super clean. We loved sitting around the fire with a few drinks and there was a live band at Cantrells that made the evening more enjoyable. We will definately return.
Also, when they say you need 4wd or awd, they are not joking. you will not make it up the hill in 2 wd

The Perfect Getaway
We had a slight hiccup with the check in process, but John was able to take care of it right away! You will definitely need 4 wheel drive to get up the driveway. The cabin is well equipped to make your stay easy and comfortable. We enjoyed playing games, reading books in the loft on our rainy day, and sitting out by the fire at night. Location is perfect- easy access to all the sights. We would definitely recommend staying at Top of the Hill!

Fantastic cabin for a rafting getaway.
The owner was always great to respond quickly to questions. The cabin is just adorable! It was very clean (I’m extra picky about that), well maintained and plenty of games, extra blankets, pillows, outdoor seating, etc. were provided. Fantastic kitchen that was thoughtfully stocked with everything needed to prepare meals while we were there. The whole family really enjoyed the fire pit after dark and the bands that played at Cantrell’s was an added bonus. We had no complaints about the mattresses in each bedroom.
My only criticism would be the pullout sofa bed and extra air mattress. Both were pretty awful. Bring your own air mattresses along if you need more than two queen sized beds and you’ll have a perfect mountain retreat enjoying one of the prettiest places on the east coast!

Great time!
Our family was in WV for the 2019 WSJ and had a great experience. The cabin was just as pictured and is in a great location, just wished we could have spent more time there. John was so helpful in assisting us with his knowledge of the area and even helped us with restaurants and best of all- the rafting experience- which is just across the road. My family already wants to return for a longer visit. I would definitely recommend this property. Thanks John
