- superb and friendly staff, they are a family and they welcome you at their home
- excellent traditional breakfast from Costa Rica (rice with beans, fried banana, bread, scrambled eggs, fruit, coffee)
- free parking onsite
- if you want to experience a real stay like the locals hosted by a family look no further , if you expect to have a hotel style accommodation then go somewhere else, this is not your typical hotel with reception and whatnot
- insulation of rooms is not the best, but this is something you know beforehand so it should not really be a negative point, I mention it for awareness for others. This means that some bugs might enter into the room, but you are staying in the middle of nature after all
- location wise, there is a supermarket within walking distance but no restaurant. So you will need to either walk 20min or drive for 5
- roads to get to Monteverde are simply crazy, but that's not their fault :)

Breakfast excellent, Very friendly owners
location not very good- by the road and not much in the countryside (noisy place). Access road terrible.

Very nice basic place to stay, located just outside of Santa Elena. Rooms are clean and very well maintained. Everyone there was friendly and helpful. Note, the only kitchen is communal. Breakfast was great, although we had the same thing every morning. There is a grocery store right next door.
The communal kitchen could use a stove top and pans so that we can cook more than one thing at a time. Having just one electric pan is not enough for one family to cook a dinner.

Good breakfast

The hostess, Matcha, was so sweet! She was happy to help us with anything we needed. It was also a cute and comfortable little place.
You could hear everything outside of the room. Any doors closing or cars driving outside would keep me up at night. Also, there was no air conditioning.

This is a super basic place, but a great value for money. More than anything else, we loved to meet the family running this place. They were kind and warm. In this very touristic country, it is an amazing experience to meet real people. It is very clean, basic, and has a good breakfast.

Cute little b&b, very clean, good beds, delicious breakfast - and the owners really made us feel welcome and helped us organize an activity.

Extraordinary friendly host, lovely atmosphere. They made everything with love and from the bottom of their heart.

When you stay here, you are really into the Costa Rican life. Breakfast was in their house, very cosy. Macha did also the laundry, which was very nice! It is only 1,5 km from Santa Elena, so a nice trip to walk in the evening after dinner. There are facilities in the shared kitchen to prepare your own meal.
The hosts don't speak English (and our knowledge of Spanish is limited), but with a translate app and signs we could communicate.

Location good if you have a car or and happy to walk. Breakfast great, people lovely :)

The place is run by Macha, Victor, Francisco, Manuel and the rest of the family. From the moment we made the reservation, they made sure we enjoyed our stay and helped us whenever they could. They gave us great advice and helped us with booking tours and transport (and made sure we paid the right price). Once we got there, they gave us a heartfelt welcome and made us feel right at home.
The bus driver knew the family and dropped us off right in front of the pension. The rooms are simple, wooden cabins. However, it is well run, clean and there is everything you need. A supermarket is right next door. There is pavement all the way to the town center, which is about 1.5km away. We either walked or took a cab.
We loved breakfast and talking to the family. If you like interaction with locals and great value, don't look any further.

Machita and Victor are the best. Great hosts, which is, with hot (and running) water, very important for a solo traveller! They do everything to make you feel comfortable. It is even possible to board the public bus to San José in front of the Pension... Gracias to this wonderful family!
A few bugs in my room, but it's Costa Rica, where biodiversity is an important part of the tourist offer and where it is necessary to pay, probably, 200-300 dollars per night if you want a perfect room, without that type of roommates :)

The hotel was lovely. Staff was great. Breakfast was good. There is a food truck next door with AMAZING hamburgers as well as a grocery store.

it is a bit far from the centre, you can very easily hear people outside the room talking. beds are a bit hard.

We will always remember our hosts and their family. They're awesome! I like the location on the south side of St Elena, because It's like re-entering Monteverde everyday. It's away from the noise of town but very close by car on the main, paved road. The gas station across the street and the store just to the south are convenient for basic needs. What stands out the most are the hosts. 10/10 they made us feel like family. Also it was a fantastic value, with the free breakfast. We look forward to breakfast every day with our hosts. We ended up buying some sewn products that we will treasure including two tortilla warmers and two handbags. We had some good times in the shared kitchen with the other guests and it was nice to meet people as everyone is kind of relaxing from the Covid years. All in all I think you get a LOT for a boarding house experience. Go into it with the right expectations and you'll love this place and save some money too.
Be ready for some hardcore wind in Monteverde. There's just no avoiding it, the wind can be so intense at night that it might be hard to fall asleep. This is overall my biggest critique of Monteverde but what can you expect, it's at the top of a mountain. The wind whistling through spaces in the boarding house and the small vegetation hitting against the walls was difficult. However, even without air conditioning, heat, or even a fan it was easy to regulate temperature with blankets or no blankets. You need to be ready for small spaces. It was pretty tight in there with our family of three and suitcases for 6 days. We never really unpacked.

The owners!! They were amazing and just completely made the place for us.
All the decorations are made by the owner by hand and attention to detail for the guests is so lovely (e.g. towel arrangements were crabs complete with googly eyes, and breakfast presentation was lovely)
Our breakfast was great and included handmade jam and full Galle pinto.
Bed was comfy
Probably one of the cleanest looking places we've stayed in Costa Rica on a budget.
Would definitely go back!!
Location was very accessible and is a only a 15/20min walk into Santa Elena but is not actually in the town. As you pull up to the place, it appears as if it's on main road, opposite a gas station but due to the way it's sunk down from the road actually this doesn't bother you at all and they've created really nice sitting areas in pretty flower filled bushes

The hosts are super friendly, we really enjoyed chatting to them. Also they were very helpful with tips and info, booking our shuttle bus etc. The location was great, although not central the bus that we needed to take for our visits was departing from the gas station across the street. Breakfast was delicious too. We felt like we went home to visit our family and got spoiled :) I highly recommend this place
Nothing that we didn’t like, it was perfect

Our host Victor was very nice and very helpfull. Even we don't speak much Spanish we were able to arrange everything. He even prepared for us the breakfast at 5:00 am when we have to catch the bus. And he helped us to catch the bus in front of his cabinas so we didn't need to walk to bus station. The room was very clean and comfortable. The location is outside of the city centet but it's just around 10 minutes walk and during which you can enjoy nice views on the surrounding mountains and the valley.
