After having loved our stay at Catalonia Royal Tulum, another five star, all inclusive resort nearby with less money,we were expecting perfection; we were therefore disappointed.
We asked for a room upgrade and were delighted to be given a discount of 10 dollars per night, i.e. 40 dollars for 4 nights, but our joy didn't last long as we later found out this was less than we could have been offered(see below).
Despite the abundance of a la carte restaurants on offer, there was a funny reservation system whereby they allowed us only two reservations out of the 4 nights we stayed. There was evident disconnect internally at check in as the reception said we were guaranteed two reservations, the concierge desk told us that we were entitled to only one and this led to the first confusion. We went for the Japanese restaurant and there came our second disappointment. It was actually a grill show where food was grilled in front of us which would have been great, were it not for the awful ventilation system they had and us sitting right at the point where all smoke was coming on our faces. The manager was kind enough to put us in a separate table towards the end of the show but this couldn't save the night.
Apparently due to the confusion at check in mentioned above,we were given a 300 dollar credit voucher for various hotel services which we were entitled to just the day before we left as the concierge staff missed this during check in. And there was our worst disappointment;the voucher included a 60 dollar room upgrade discount while we had been just offered 40.When we complained about the 60 vs 40 dollar discount, we had to escalate to two managers in order to get the amount we were entitled to. Our issue wasn't about the 20 bucks of course, but after this third incident we felt that the whole hotel was disorganised and mismanaged when they have such a great product to offer to their clients. Poor management was obvious also by the lack of beach service,i.e.
The buffet restaurant was at the high Iberostar standards I am used to when visiting Spain.
Most of the staff members were attentive and the pool events were a lot of fun.
In particular the Dutch lady at the reception was excellent,as well as the barmen and staff at the pool and beach.

Amazing tropical garden, good beach and beautiful pools. A lot of animals in the garden. Friendly staff. Excellent food. It was my second time in this hotel.
Maybe the rooms could just be a little bit better but everything else compensates for everything.

I loved the environment! Between the facilities and the staff everyone was helpful and top of the line!
I just wish I was given more information about what was available and where things were.

Great pool area---Japanese restaurant very good. Work out facility and classes excellent. Small food shops located in shopping center were very enjoyable. Check in and check out smooth and fast.
4.2
The only thing we really liked were the amazing grounds with all the jungle greenery and animals, and the excellent beaches.
Almost everything, including the food poisoning that made us both very sick for almost the entire trip. The regular rooms were dark and dingy and outdated.
