Basement room very noisy and extremely small, we were even handed ear plugs on arrival! So a very unpleasant and noisy first night. Second night we moved to an upstairs room, which was nice until the electricity in the room failed at 10:30 pm. With no one available to check this out but the night porter we spent our second night cold and in the dark. In the morning we had to wash and dress by phone torch light. When we complained it was evident that the staff did not believe us even though the fault was witnessed by the porter. It took an age to get any type of compensation (half money back for the second night only) and this took complaints via Expedia and at least five calls to the hotel. Avoid... it is not nearly as good as it looks in the photographs.

First time staying here on a Christmas shopping trip with my sister. Absolutely perfect location. The hotel itself is stunning, the decor and room was beautiful. The staff are a credit as all so friendly, welcoming and helpful. Before checking out we've already decided we want to return next year.

Cane to York for a last minute work event for Halloween and came across this place and oh my god i never wanted to leave. The night manager when i was there was absolutely wonderful and so helpful

From the moment we arrived we felt really well looked after. The room was definitely an adventure considering it was underground. We loved it though, so well thought out, and brilliantly done. We woukd definitely return again.

Staff were friendly once we were there, but the roo. We had booked had to have maintenence, so theyd rang me multiple times to change rooms. Often they were confused and had no idea why theyd rang me or said id rang them to cancle when theyd rang me. Bed was way too hard, musoc from the bar above was also too loud. I feel it ahould state that there will be music when you book the roooms. Personal choice of soap and bathbomb for the room were a really nice choice. Personally woulsnt stay here again, i feel for that price I expect a goood nights sleep and the hard bed and noise is a no from us.

The hotel is very overpriced for what it is the room is very small and dark. I know I used my rewards points but was very disappointed with the hotel

Had a great night at Impossible Motel, very quirky place. Room for as amazing, 4 Poster Bed and large feature fireplace, bathroom was small but functional and well designed. Had a drink downstairs in Pink, and returned back to our room through the ‘Secret Door’. Would defo stay again, as central as it gets for all of York. We where in the 1st floor near reception, looking out onto a busy high street but noise wasn’t a problem.

I loved the dark inside of the hotel and the design of the hotel lighting inside. Staff we informative and very welcoming and friendly.

Perfect location in York. The hotel rooms are unique and beautifully decorated in the bed is fabulous. The staff at the hotel is extraordinarily helpful and made first day that much better. If and when we come back this is the only place we will stay!

The hotel was fantastic. Quirky, unusual and atmospheric. The staff were all so friendly and helpful - we were even allowed a look at some of the empty rooms to consider for our next trip. The descriptions are true to life which we appreciated when booking - the toilets/showers are a little less private than other hotels but we were well aware of that before our stay. The location was perfect, right in the centre of York but we didn’t find it too noisy - perhaps because our stay was on a Sunday night. We used the YourParkingSpace app to find cheap parking about 10mins walk away.

Very quirky hotel, very clean, very strange reception area, pitch black with orange lights, room had no windows but amazing bathroom with free standin bath.

Absolutely fabulous hotel, with excellent customer service which is rare these days. On arrival we were greeted, and checked in with ease. We were allowed to choose our own soap from Lush which was very fun. The hotel, and room were impeccably decorated, in a moody dark aesthetic. We had the larger of the two hot tub suites, it was a generous sized room, a king size bed, and a small but adequate shower room. There were stairs up to a roof terrace with a hot tub that was outstanding. My only slight criticism is there was no small table and chairs to sit and eat/drink there which would have been nice. And the swinging sofa whist fun, wasn't that comfortable and I would have liked some normal chairs/sofa also. Overall a fabulous stay, and we would definitely book again.

We loved the hotel itself but it was a warm, busy night in York city centre and it was almost impossible to sleep due to the noise from other people outside until the early hours. The room was cosy and the bed truly wonderful. We may return at a less busy time of year.

This is a quirky hotel and in many ways very cool, however, the main reason for most hotels is to offer its patrons a good night's sleep. This is something you will struggle with if you book a basement room. I should have guessed really when I was shown to the room and given some earplugs by the doorman. The music went on until around midnight and then the clear-up of whatever was going on above the room lasted until 1.30 am, the earplugs were pretty pointless. On check out, I was asked how my stay was and I mentioned it would be good to tell guests that their room was going to be directly below what I think was the restaurant and that it was going to be noisy. I was told that this is communicated in the emails sent by the hotel after booking. I looked through these emails, and whilst it does mention to be sure you have the right room for your stay as they are a bit quirky, and that the walls are porous and to respect other guests it certainly doesn't mention that you have to put up with a restaurant above your room. Also, the attitude given to me implying that I didn't sleep well due to it being my fault for not reading a very lengthy email wasn't really very good either. Overall the concept of this hotel is interesting and something different, it still doesn't get past the fact that it still needs to offer a place where sleep is the main factor.

Location was fantastic, situated in the center just off The Shambles, a warm welcome by the staff who took our bags as we where early and placed the bags in the room when it was ready. The room we stayed in was very quirky and not your standard room like other hotels. Highly recommended and i would book again. P.s. car parking was a 5 minute walk via the park.

Lovely place to stay for a romantic get away, only down side was the rooms are small although beautifully decorated. We had an issue with our heating too (room 23), the radiator decided to stop working which was annoying, we were offered a plug in heater but declined as there was no room for one and managed without. If you are looking for something a bit different in the heart of York it’s a really nice place to stay but I would opt for one of the larger rooms which are quite expensive.

Had such a lovely stay. We stayed in the Dungeon. The staff went above and beyond from the initial greeting through to when we checked out. The room was clean - no issues at all. Would highly recommend a will be booking again!

The property was unique and had an amazing atmosphere. Staff are always around just incase you need anything. Was very classy we loved it 😆

Room had lovely interior, but the bathroom was almost dangerously small. Tiny room to squeeze into with tiny sink above toilet and Easy to bang into shower glass and door. Actually comically how small it is. We were also given earplugs as the room was beside the busy street beside a late night McDonald's, the room should come with a warning that you NEED to use earplugs to nearly get a decent sleep. All in all, very expensive for a poor experience, room should come with a warning.

Really relaxing place to stay, nice and dark. Staff were really accommodating and friendly. The location is great. Definitely will be staying there again if I am back in York.

Really enjoyed my stay here great location in the center of the city, was given the heads up by reception about street noise during the night but it wasnt noticeable enough to cause any issues. Overall really quirky and unique Hotel will definitely be back.

A very interesting hotel - was skeptical about lack of reviews but enjoyed the stay. A completely unique place though. We stayed in the Mailroom which was plenty big enough for two. Clean and comfortable with great service. We knew what to expect in terms of the intimate bathrooms and lack of window so we weren't surprised. Be wary if this is something that bothers you - no door to the loo. They acknowledged there could be noise overnight - you're right in the city after all. We didn't experience any noise until about 8am which we presumed was just other guests in the hallway above. Between midnight and 8am we had no issues whatsoever. Would absolutely stay again.
