This place is simply awesome. Keep in mind that it's not a hotel. It's a guest house and it's the best that you can find for this amount of money.
The house has its own charm and character. And miss Tani is the sweetest person. She tries her best to help you. When I arrived, mosquitos were biting me so bad. She went in and found me some mosquito cream and it really helped. She welcomes her guests with Japanese tea and sweet. And when you check out, she gives you a Japanese gift.
The place is in the northern part of Kyoto. So it might be a problem if you want to stay late in the city center and touristic areas at night. However, the area is surrounded by many temples. You can go early and explore Daituko-ji (some of the temples are open to the public).
At night you can go to funaoka onsen ( which is one of the best) which is open until 11:30 and is only 8 minutes walking. I didn't know that you need to bring your own towel and soap and miss Tani told me that and gave me those.
All in all, this place is totally worth trying if you don't mind staying in a non-luxurious place.
I only didn't like the bike that I rented. I explored the city for one day with it but it's a very old bike and if you are tall like me, I don't recommend it

A charming 100-year-old house set in a peaceful, large temple compound. Staying here was like stepping back in time. All of the furniture and fittings are from yesteryear - the rooms seemed the same design as they would have been 50 years ago. The owner was so friendly and welcoming. This lovely (great?) grandmother brought a bowl of matcha and Japanese sweet to my room when I arrived. She welcomed me every time I returned to the guesthouse, and gave me a lovely gift when I left. And then there is the breakfast - home cooked and huge. The owner also told me to help myself to juice from the fridge. Clean shower and sink area. The house is very old and the windows are open to ventilate it, so there is the added bonus of a few insects. Staying here is for those who want to take a peek at what Japanese living might have been like decades ago, and who do not expect every nook and cranny to be spotless. I have stayed in over 50 guest houses in Kyoto and this is now my favourite. I very much look forward to staying here many times in the future. Thank you Mrs Tani - you are wonderful.

Staff is very hospitable and welcoming. They would have prepared breakfast every day but I said I didn't need it because of my everchanging schedule. Shower and toilet very close to my room and kept clean. I felt free to come and go as I pleased. All in all a nice experience.
