About this house rental
PETS WELCOME!
$225/night for up to 4 guests. $20/night per additional guest. Plus VRBO service fee and 6% lodging tax.
Kiddville was a small gold mining camp in the days of the settlement of the Black Hills IN THE LATE 1800's!
It was then abandoned after the gold rush.
The vacation home originally was the two story miner's boarding house. The boarding house was then converted and re-modeled into a MODEST family home in the 1930's, and the property became a private, 38 acre, ranch/homestead.
And, again, in 2007 the home was updated with new plumbing, carpet, beds,...
The location is 9 miles NW of Custer.
Six of these miles is well maintained gravel.
The second floor of the Vacation Home hosts the three small bedrooms and the full bath. The main floor consists of a living room, kitchen, dining room, laundry area, porch, and small sun room.
Two of the bedrooms have queen beds. The third bedroom has two twin beds.
The original homesteader/ranchers (my grandparents) from the 1930's lived in the house for 75 years till 2007!
The home is located on 38 privately owned acres; no other inhabited dwellings. Solitude for you!
This acreage is located in the heart of excellent National Forest deer/turkey/elk country. There are no other inhabited dwellings on the 38 acre property.
Ranch cattle may be found grazing on some of the (fenced) acreage. The five acre yard hosts no livestock.
USFS adjoins the property across from the front door.
Historic buildings yet on the property are a mine assay office, caretaker's house, a barn/corral, and cabin.
Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave are some of the nearby attractions..

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property and particularly appreciated the notes throughout the grounds about the history and family who built it. Staying here was like stepping back in time to experience an earlier lifestyle but without having to sacrifice modern conveniences. We certainly plan on visiting again and plan to book for a longer stay next time.

We stayed here for 5 nights. Listing was very accurate, house was clean and ready for us! The property was peaceful- it was easy enough to get to town if you wanted but house had all the amenities we needed to cook and relax. It’s the perfect location for any of the Black Hills tourist attractions. We had no issues and owner was very responsive and pleasant when we called to check in. I would go back again and will recommend to family and friends.

We so enjoyed the space and exploration area this house gave us! Our kids and dogs loved hiking through the forest right outside the door and checking out all the historical buildings on the property. The well water took some getting use to, but other than that everything was great. We really enjoyed our stay!

My wife and I really enjoyed the property! It was fun coming home every day around dusk and seeing different wildlife walking through. Our dogs also loved every bit of the area! The house had everything we needed and Kay was very friendly. We’re sorry we missed her when she stopped by. We would definitely stay again.

Clean and cozy. Kay is so sweet and easy to work with. Hope to come back next year.

We were looking forward to this stay from the reviews. It was nice having property for the kids and dogs to roam; However, I doubt that a full 5 acres was mowed and up kept as stated. The first night we came in at 10pm and were exhausted, but had to change/clean bedding before we could sleep. It was to late to complain, so I alerted the owner when she introduced herself the next day and I sent a message on here. She was appalled at the situation and more than apologetic for the situation. Kay and Trish were very sweet and wonderful. However, we expected old and nostalgic stay, but clean. There was too much to waste my time and their’s telling them about everything because it would been impossible to take care of during our stay. The home just really needs a good deep cleaning: floors shampooed, couches, all cabinets, walls etc cleaned. The location and property were secluded, but in a wonderful location.

Rustic and historical. Kay our host was delightful. Our dogs were in heaven. Minutes from Custer and the beautiful Custer State Park.

I gave it 5 stars and my three dogs would give it 5 paws or bones! It was great being away from everybody, but close to everything we wanted to do. The owners were easy to get ahold of and to talk too! I would definitely recommend this place to people visiting. If we ever get the chance to go back I will be booking it again. Always nice to find a place that doesn’t have a pet fee!!

Best vacation cabin I’ve ever stayed at! Peaceful but also spooky in the best ways. Tons of space. Felt like camping in a ghost town. All the members of our group were beyond pleased. Even the ghosts were kind and welcoming

We found this by accident as we normally use alternatives but we are so glad that we did. We changed our plans due to the weather in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico and although we were going to South Dakota, we were not intending staying long. This place is amazing and we would have loved to have stayed longer than five days. We are familiar with old houses (we live in one) but the history of this and the family was lovely. We enjoyed the space, peace and quiet, fires in the evening, wildlife in the morning and the solitude and safety that Kiddville afforded us. We changed our plans yet again to ensure that we saw the sights that we had come for but also had downtime at the house. Tip for travellers, go to Mt Rushmore at 3.30 and then Crazy Horse on the way back. There were very few people at either, none at Crazy Horse and we spent all of the day just hanging out at the house. We had no need for AC as the house is cool, we just left the windows to ventilate. The bed is super comfortable and there is everything that we needed to live here. Not one person has left a review in the guest book that is anything but complimentary which tells you everything that you need to know. We had the pleasure of meeting Kay (sorry we missed you Patricia) and finding out further details of her life here and family. We seriously mean it when we say that we will be back as we would love to come back for an update of Crazy Horse development. Communication was fabulous and the house is marvellous.

Great location to Custer state park and downtown Custer. Reading and hearing about the family history in the clearly cared for property was a fun bonus. Working with Patricia and Kay was our pleasure.

Perfect location for our stay in the Black Hills. I’m glad they had WiFi because there was no cell reception in the majority of locations (outside of towns) in the Black Hills. But there was a landline at the house in case of emergency. We actually loved the seclusion of this location and the quaintness of the house. Beds were comfy and the house itself was so charming. Our hosts were so friendly and great at communicating with us. Loved seeing all the wildlife and wildflowers blooming everywhere. Even our dogs enjoyed romping through the fields with reckless abandon. Highly recommend for a memorable visit.

We would definitely stay here again! It was very close to Custer, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse, and an easy drive to Mount Rushmore. The house was great, very clean, plenty of room for our family of 5 plus two dogs. We didn't even use one of the bedrooms. The kids enjoyed the nice toy box and being able to go exploring/rock climbing right out the front door! The kitchen was very well stocked, and they had everything needed for a bonfire. We enjoyed getting to meet Kay and being able to read about the property's history. Great stay!

The house is wonderful! Everything we needed was there. The kitchen is stocked with everything needed to cook complete meals. We don't eat out (except for ice cream😉) . Plenty of basic
essentials for cooking a homecooked meal.
The toy box was a wonderful surprise for the kiddos. 😊 Thanks
The home is very clean and had lots of towels.
LOCATION!!! WOW!! Perfect location. Lots of privacy yet a short drive to town, parks, hiking. We loved walking out the front door and being able to take off on a forest adventure hike. We saw lots of animals.
The hosts were wonderful and we loved meeting up with Kay. She is an amazing woman!
Thank you for letting us stay at your family farm and mine.

Able to have much needed rest and relaxation. Historic house has all amenities. Towns people are friendly. Shopping is good. Other more busy towns are 15-30 minute drives. Outdoor beauty is everywhere.
4.8
Loved it. Very quiet area to walk the dog and do some hiking. Nice area to sit outside and have a fire or grill out. We enjoyed it very much.
4.8
A quiet retreat but close to town and all the attractions the area offers. The old miner's boarding house has been upgraded and has everything one might need. The owner has helpful notes around the house and is quick to respond to any questions/issues. If you are looking for new and fancy this is probably not your spot. If you are looking for a quiet spot in a great location this is your place to stay!

We loved our stay at the Kiddville property. The scenery is breathtaking and the fresh air so refreshing. The home was comfortable with everything you might need. This stay provided a much needed rest. And it was so nice to find a place to stay with our dogs without being charged a paw and a leg. I’d highly recommend this property and we look forward to future stays!

The property is wonderful, lots of wildlife, peace and quiet. That being said, Custer is only 15 minutes away. It's perfectly placed for the Black Hills attractions. You can easily see Crazy Horse Mountain as you turn onto the main road leaving the road to the home. Thank you for your hospitality, and a wonderful vacation !!

The location of this property is amazing. Very secluded and peaceful. Plenty of firewood, old Grimms Fairytale Book and Archie Comics. Well stocked kitchen, I could not locate a pizza cutter ( but plenty of cutting knives). Nightly walks to see the cows, chipmunks, birds and whatever wildlife was viaiting. Keep in mind the home was built in the late 1880's, my husband and I grew up in old homes. My kids needed a minute to adjust and feel secure that the creeks and groans of such a treasure are normal. We hope to visit again one day. I hated to leave. Oh, and bonus, large crockpot!

We had one of the best vacations ever staying at this historic mining boarding house in a beautiful and private setting. The house was comfortable and well stocked with everything we needed. Kay was a delight to deal with and was a gracious host. We enjoyed hearing the coyotes howling at night, the deer, owls and of course the friendly cows that greeted us each day. Our dogs loved it there as well and none of us wanted to leave. We will definitely be back in the future!
4.8
Kiddville exceeded all of our expectations communication was great and the host made sure we had everything we needed. We have decided this will be our annual vacation spot. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

We really enjoyed staying here. The house is as described, clean, and so cool! The coffee table book about the history was a great read. We enjoyed the peaceful setting, and the close proximity to all the history of the area as well.

Country Vacation
Nice country stay. Lots of deer around. Beautiful scenery. So relaxing.

Lovely
The only thing that was more enjoyable than this scenic and beautiful property, was the friendliness of the property manager (and also the cows, haha). We are SO GLAD we stayed here and would definitely stay again!

Loved our visit
Had a great stay! Fairly close to all we wanted to see in Custer. Loved the view of Crazy Horse Monument as we would drive to Custer each day. Beautiful area and our dogs loved the walks we would do on the property. So quiet and peaceful.
4.8
Quaint, quiet and private
The house is old and presents some challenges with only one bathroom, but we loved the location, its privacy and the abundant wildlife. Would definitely stay again.

Property was as described. House is in quiet location down about 6 miles of well-maintained county gravel roads, last 2-3 blocks down private well-graveled road. We stayed 11 nights May/June 2022, and we had unusual weather in that it rained 8 of the days, but the roads were no problems. We saw deer on the property every day, and some wild turkeys. It was a peaceful place to stay. You could see stars at night. Owner Kay grew up at the location, and was very interesting to talk with, and was very helpful. I am in my 70s, and didn't have a problem, but some may have a problem with the bathroom and bedrooms on the second floor. Land has many historical buildings on it, and out the gate up the hill is National Forest. The small stream through the property attracted deer each morning and evening. We went to all nearby attractions (Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore, Deadwood/Lead, Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, Needles Hwy, Badlands, Wall Drug, Rapid City, Devil's Tower, Hot Springs, Black Hills lakes and caves) and they were all reasonable drives from house. Would definitely stay there again.

Perfect getaway
From the moment we arrived, our two teenagers excitedly explored the house and property, reading all the information so thoughtfully displayed for guests. Our stay at Kiddville was wonderful. We enjoyed our short visit with Kay after she stopped by to check on us after a storm. We look forward to returning and learning more from Kay about the history of the property and her family.

Feel like a part of South Dakota history
We loved our stay in this old boarding house. Having 33 acres all to yourself in unfamiliar territory and in the middle nowhere can be a little intimidatiing at first, but once we settled in and got familiar with the house and our surroundings, it was GREAT. You are truly thrown back in time. The house is dated, which added to the experience, but it offered up everything we needed for a comfortable stay, and the property was amazing. We were sad to leave a day early but had to due to incoming weather. The owners were a joy to work with and made you feel like a 'special guest' in their home. The house is a 10-15 minute drive on a dirt road off the main roadway going into Custer, so get there in the daylight on day 1 if you can. We were within 30 minutes of Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, & Mt. Rushmore. 15 minutes from Crazy Horse, and and hour from Deadwood and Badlands, so the location IS PERFECT! We would definitely stay again! You can tell the owners care about their guests.

Quiet and Relaxing
We visited South Dakota for the purpose of possibly moving there. We had a lot to accomplish in 3 days and it was wonderful to come back to such a quiet, relaxing and beautiful property after very busy days. Kay was a wonderful host, stopping by to make sure we had everything we needed. My husband had an very interesting conversation with her learning about the property. The deer greeted us every day when we returned.

So beautiful. We could feel the history. Stocked above and beyond with everything a home would have. The experience was our first with VRBO and we were so pleased. We have to go exploring, see wildlife in their natural habitat and it's close to everything we wanted to do. I miss it already.

The property had alot of history, it was a beautiful, peaceful place. There were many acres to walk around and explore.
The house had everything inside that you could possibly need.

If you are looking for a quiet, historic, comfortable place in the Black Hills, Kiddville is the place! We loved the valley this property sits in, all the history provided of it being a former gold mine camp, the owners were so sweet! Our family hauled our UTV's to explore the Black Hills, it was very convenient to unload the trailer at Kiddville. We didn't use our truck for 4 days. Loved our stay! Communication from the owner and information provided by her is excellent!
