Best place for exploring York, so convenient for walking, shopping, so close to York minster and the Shambles.
A fabulous hotel with great history.
4.2
Beautiful room lots of character. Tasty breakfast and friendly staff. The only downside was our room was the 4th floor and steep stairs could be an issue with mobility.
4.2
Very comfortable beds, cosy, very central, great food, great service.

Only stayed one night but staff were very kind and it’s in a great location. The building is beautiful and the bed was really comfy. The pub has a great beer garden too. One thing to say (& this is common for the architecture across York) is that the doorways can be quite small and a bit of a hazard if you’re tall!

We loved our stay once we found it as had problems accessing it by car in the dark, no parking and need to use carpark quite a distance to walk from the hotel.
The room was quirky and the bed very comfortable and cosy. Staff were very helpful and food lovely.

This was a very cute and fun place to stay at the end of our trip to England. The staff is so friendly and our room was comfortable. The spaces in the hallways were quite tight, but we enjoyed the rustic feel of the place and our English breakfasts. Very convenient to sightseeing, as it is right down the block from incredible York Minster.

Had an overnight stay at the Fat Badger. Lovely service and good food and great location but not great sleep. Late night revelry and early morning keg deliveries make not for a good night’s sleep. Better glass in windows could help!
4.2
The Fat Badger was a quaint 12 room hotel located inside the city walls of York. Location was very good within walking distance to York Minster and many historic sites. The restaurant and secret garden location were both very good. The hotel is close to local pubs and the street is loud on weekends.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Fat Badger!
The staff were all amazing - so friendly and helpful!
The breakfast was very nice and the location was fantastic! Thank you!
4.2
Difficult stairway access to bedroom- almost dangerous. Hotel was very dark and not very inviting. No hooks or soap tray in bathroom. No drawspace. Expensive for what it was.
On the plus side- great location,v. Good breakfast and helpful staff
4.2
Quirky hotel with character but wouldn’t use again. Our bedroom had windows overlooking the beer garden and a footpath which allowed people to look straight in to the bedroom and bathroom so privacy was an issue as the only way to block this was to bring the blinds right down. Breakfast was average too. The location however was great.
4.2
This was an exciting spot to stay. Right in amongst everything. Needed more time to explore everything. Will come again next time.

The property is in the heart of York, the staff is incredibly helpful and nice, Bella is the best.
There are few thing that I didn’t like:, the color of the walls is black, and makes the room look smaller and gloomy, the shower is very dangerous, there is a big step to do to go in and out, and the bottom of it it’s extremely slippery, I risked my life every night and also it doesn’t have a surface where you can put the soap or the shampoo on it, so it is very uncomfortable.
But other than that the place is clean, the restaurant is adorable with a beautiful garden in the back, the food and drinks are delicious, and the staff is super, we had a great stay.

Great, stairs a bit of a challenge and a bit of road noise in early morning if at front but otherwise accommodation, staff and food absolutely great! Location perfect too!
4.2
Parking too far away! Property although old was dated! Bedroom facing busy street very noisy! No double glazing!
4.2
Lovely overnight stay in a very characterful property, set into the old city wall. Both dinner & breakfast were cooked beautifully and staff were very friendly. Great place to stay and only one minute walk from York Minster and the centre of the city.

Couldn't resist the name. The hotel was in the perfect location for a short trip in York. It was walkable to everything but still tucked away enough that I didn't have to worry about loud people all night.
Fair warning this hotel doesn't have an elevator, only stairs so if you're like me and tend to over pack - you've been warned. That being said staff were super helpful in bringing my luggage up and down the stairs.
Would gladly stay here again.

The antiquity of the place was charming; the hike up four flights not so much.

It was so delightful. Be aware of the steps and yet staff took good care of us! They took all of our bags up

Wonderful atmosphere and very easy walking distance to all the main attractions.

Lovely, quirky hotel in the heart of York! Bed was comfy and room was clean, well maintained and had all necessary amenities. Will definitely be booking again!

The Fat Badger was in a perfect location, right in the heart of York!
The food was great with an extensive drinks menu.
The bar was lively and fun. The secret garden is beautiful for summer outdoor drinks and dining.
However, the room was very warm with the heating on during a mild weekend in May. This made an uncomfortable nights sleep.
The service was a bit hit and miss. Some good but some uninterested in us especially at breakfast and checking out…
This is a shame as this lovely pub could be so much better if the service was a little more focused on making it special.

Great location, no lift.

The location was great, minutes from the shambles and many places to eat and drink. Breakfast was amazing and the staff was very friendly!

Absolutely gorgeous hotel next to the city walls with a beer garden that is very inviting. I would highly recommend the hotel. The breakfast was delicious. If you want a small hotel with history this is where to stay in York. Perfect location for an early walk on the city walls. Superb.
4.2
Beautiful property, perfect location, but we got no sleep due the noise outside from the beer garden and street. Wonderful staff but wouldn’t stay here again as getting a good night’s sleep is important to us.
4.2
Arrived at hotel early, and was given early checkin. Excellent location right next to the city wall. Perfect for the city centre.

Very convienient for visiting York. The property is based within the walls and is very close to York Minster which is an amazing spectacle. The rooms are very 'quirky' and it was a ghostly atmospheric experience. We stayed in room 2 which had a very narrow passageway to the bathroom. The window looked out over the cobbled streets and it was next to petergate and literally just inside the city walls. Great place to stay when visiting and reasonably priced.

Quirky , charming place to stay! Staff super friendly and fabulous location.
4.2
A nicely decorated room above a pub serving excellent food.
The room could have used an extra reading light on both nightables (not just one), and a few more hooks for hanging clothes & towels (especially in the bathroom).
A very nice stay.

The staff were amazing and really helpful. The room was very cosy, and very York 👌
Thank you 👍

The property is full of character and cosy, you step in and its full of cosy nooks and crannies a maze of rooms.

Requested not to put in room 10 , but told the day before it was the only room available 😡

We stayed for one night on our way north and spent some time enjoying City centre. The hotel is located right inside one of the old wall gates with easy access to the wall, which we could see right out our room window. Parking is off site in a pay parking lot abouit 1/4 mile away (10 min walk), Check out is 11, but they close the gate at 9:30am, so if you check out after that you will be hauling your luggage to the car park. we just had carry on type bags so no biggie.
We only slept at the badger, so cannot comment on food/service. Staff for checking in and out were very helpful. Great location to enjoy the old city centre. We walked south on old wall to the south side and then cut back up through the city, to the shambles and about. We ate breakfast at the Brew and Brownie which was excellent, I highly recommend.

Everything was great. Hotel is not suitable for wheelchair users
4.2
The hotel was very pleasant with interesting decor. The room was clean and an adequate size for a single room. The bed was large and comfortable. There was coffee/tea in the room with a cup and kettle, and an iron and ironing board. There is a wonderful outdoor area, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. All perfectly good.
However, at 6:45am the kitchen extraction unit was switched on. Unfortunately it appeared to be attached to the bed and sounded like an aeroplane taking off. My lie in and leisurely morning ruined by this noise that persisted until I checked out.
The breakfast was very good, and the staff were pleasant and attentive.
Upon checking out I mentioned the unceasing noise that had ruined my intended lazy start to the day. The dismissive response was ‘Oh yeah, sorry about that’.
In conclusion, a potentially great stay was spoiled and I can’t say it was worth the price. If I had stayed in a different room my experience would probably have also been different.

Absolutely loved it here! What a fantastic location, so close to everything! Lovely welcome to the hotel. Bags were taken to our room whilst we were out and about.
The staff were all very friendly and accommodating.
Our room was lovely with all the charm of an old hotel, creaky floor boards and all! Obviously because of the age of the building the room and bathroom has a few quirks..the shower is a little tight and there aren't many plug sockets but nothing that spoils the stay at all. The bed was very comfy and everything was very clean. It was a very cosy and charming room with a view over the city wall and the Secret Garden.
Oh my the Secret Garden..what a lovely little place to have a drink to start our evening. Fairy lights and heaters make it almost magical out there of an evening. The cabin looked fab too ready for Christmas.
We travelled to this hotel for a mum and daughter trip for my daughters 18th birthday and I would like to thank the hotel for making it a very memorable trip. I will definitely be returning!
