Wow, this was a lovely estate. Beautiful old house and well kept grounds greeted us upon arrival. We stayed in a private unit separate from the main house that was high up on the hill and had a great view of Joberg and the hills in the distance. It was very peaceful and quiet during the day and the evenings. The host, Gina, was very kind too. It was our first time in Johannesburg, and she gave us a lot of recommendations for where to go eat and shop in the area. She and her staff also cooked a fantastic breakfast for us every morning. Her property felt very safe, and there was secure parking onsite for our rental car. If we ever come back to Joberg, we would gladly stay here again.

A small thing really; when it rained one day it tripped the power to the unit we were staying in, and despite flipping the switch on the db / electrical board back on, it kept shutting itself off after a few seconds, which meant no power to the entire unit. It happened in the evening one night though, so it wasn't a major inconvenience. When things had dried out the next morning, we had no problem getting the switch on the db board to stay on. We let the host know, and she did assure us that she was going to have someone come out to fix it.

Das Great Gatsby macht seinem Namen alle Ehre. Man fühlt sich ein bisschen in die Vergangenheit versetzt in diesem kleinen Juwel mitten in Joburg. Die Villa besticht durch Eleganz, viele wunderschön eingerichtete, einzigartige Zimmer mit en-suite Badezimmern und einem traumhaften Garten. Die Besitzerin Gina hat alles gegeben, damit wir uns wohlgefühlt haben. Einfach wunderbar!

Absolute gem, so glad I've found this spot. Will never stay in a hotel again when in Johannesburg.

It was everything that we hoped for and more! Gina our host went out of her way to make us feel at home. If you travelling to JHB it is the place to stay.

Staying here is like taking a step back in time to a place where comfort and space was generous. My room was huge, there are many comfortable communal spaces to nestle into and I just felt really at home. Delicious breakfasts, fresh flowers and candles and a cup of tea (served in china on a tray) whenever you ask all added to the experience. Oh and of course the resident hotel dog who acts as though he now belongs solely to you.

I don't think there was much I would change.

Everything about The Great Gatsby is pure magic. I was lucky enough to receive not one, but two upgrades during my stay by the wonderful owner, Gina. Each of the three rooms I stayed were exquisitely decorated to match the buildings, and each had their own unique 'bonus' features. By far my favourite was the second bedroom (ie not the main bedroom) of the Coach House. It's nestled against the cold rocks of the hill, feels cosy- smells amazing!- and has a massive shower. You will sleep like a baby here, and if you're a dog person like me you'll absolutely fall in love with Gina's friendly, playful pooch! For those concerned about loadshedding, the property does have a generator, so you won't be left in the dark!

I travel to South Africa two to three times a year, and have done so over the course of the past 20 years. I have stayed at the top and finest hotels in Johannesburg - the best of the best, and absolutely NONE can compare to 'The Great Gatsby' in terms of hospitality, comfort, ambience, decor, luxuriousness, and individual attention. The hotel is a gracious, completely restored mansion from the early 1920's. It has been beautifully and exquisitely restored to its original Grandeur. The mansion consists of 7 luxurious suites, each decorated in an individual tasteful manner, reflecting the aura of its original time. The rooms are not only STUNNING and SPOTLESS, but filled with exquisite antique furnishings from its individual era. The home itself is a work of art, akin to a museum. The history of the mansion is extensive, and one feels the wealth, graciousness, splendour, and finesse of those from the early 1920's who walked the passages of this home. The breakfasts were STUNNING and made to order. 5 course breakfasts. On fine china, cotton linen, and antique silverware, all on a grand stunning table which dates back to the 1800's as does all of the furniture really. Comparable to the BEST breakfasts in the world. Individual service that exceeded my experiences in all the 5 star hotels throughout the world that I have stayed in. The delicious dinners resembled nothing less than works of art. The host Gina - well there are no words to describe her. She could not do enough for me. She is the most refined, cultured, kindest, and SUPERB host. She served not only as a host, but as a concierge, recommending all that there is to see and do in the area. In terms of value, this is a joke. I cannot understand how such luxury can be presented at such a low cost, even given the great exchange rate with the American Dollar. Comparable establishments charge 10 times the price. Absolutely everything was spectacular, There was nothing that did not exceed my expectations.

We booked a standard room and when we arrived, the host Gina had upgraded us to a self catering cottage with a killer view of the city. It was just perfect for the two of us. Breakfast is available at the hotel for an additional R150, cooked by the host, who is also a chef. Definitely worth staying here if you're in the area. All staff super friendly and helpful.
